Richard Hixson was born s 1660.1 He married Margaret Watkins, daughter of Thomas Watkins and Margaret Ryall?, on 14 Sep 1686 at Milton, Massachusetts. They were both of Milton, Mass.2,3 Richard Hixson died on 28 Jan 1717/18 at Dorchester, Massachusetts.4,5
Most of my initial information on the HIX(S)ON line was collected by Mrs. Claribel G. Clark Joe and shared with me in the 1960s. She lived in Houston and Dallas, Texas, but by the 1970s I was no longer able to contact her. She was careful to work from (published) primary sources. In 2012, Carol Botteron has brought new light to this Hixson family by publishing the story of Richard's family in the Register.
Botteron suggests that the Richard Hickson who was convicted of stealing by the Suffolk County Court on 30 Jan 1676/77 may have been another person but adds that no other Richard Hickson has been found in Massachusetts at the time.6
"At the time of their marriage Richard and Margaret were both residents of Milton, where Richard was presumably a farmer. Between 1686 and 1696 Richard appeared in the Milton Town Records on the lists of ratepayers of the town.7 To judge from the level at which he was taxed, he was among the less prosperous citizens of Milton. "Richard Hixson and his family moved to the southern part of Dorchester about 1700:9 ... This land was in Stoughton when that town was formed from Dorchester in 1726. In 1765 Stoughtonham was established as a separate district within Stoughton, and in 1775 was made a separate town, whose name was changed to Sharon in 1783, still in Suffolk County.10 In 1708 Richard Hixson, husbandman, bought 118 acres of land from Thomas and John Tolman for £15.11 The land was then in Dorchester near 'Mashapoge', now called Massapoag Lake in Sharon, and close to the present Hixson Road Farm Road in Sharon. In 1715 Richard bought an additional 24 acres from Samuel Swift."1213

Joanna Hoare

Joanna Hoare married Ezra Morse, son of John Morse and Annas (?), on 18 Feb 1670/71 at Dedham, Massachusetts.1 Joanna Hoare died on 21 Dec 1691 at Braintree, Massachusetts.2
"The question to be considered is the parentage Joanna Hoar, wife Ezra Morse. While no positive evidence appears on this point, there is a good deal of circumstantial evidence which tends to show who she was, and I am of the opnion that the probablity as to her parentage is strong. Joanna was evidently born about 1645-50.
"Two early Hoar families must be considered. First, that of Hezekiah Hoar who was of Taunton, in Plymouth Colony, in 1642. ... It is evident that Joanna could hardly have belonged in this family, as Hezekiah's children were born far too late for her to belong in this family ...
"It may be noted that there was a Richard Hoar in Yarmouth on Cape Code who was made a freeman Plymouth Colony 7 Sep 1641, and who was among those able to bear arms in 1643. He was a proprietor, an elder, and a Court Commissioner as well as a schoolmaster, and occurs in Yarmouth in 1659 (The Register, Vol 5, p. 388). Yarmouth is a long distance from Dedham and there is no record that he was married or had a family, so Joanna could hardly have been his daughter. (cf. Pope, op. cit., p. 233).
"The other family Hoar was that the widow Joanna Hoar, who came to New England in or about 1642 and settled in Braintree, a town adjoining Dedham. She brought with her sons John, Daniel, and Leonard, and a daughter Joanna, born about 1625, who married in Braintree, 26:5mo:1648, Edmund Quincy, Jr. (Pope, op. cit., pp. 232-233); another daughter, Margery, married in Glouchester, England 25 Dec. 1633, John Matthews, by whom she had a child named Charles. After the death her husband and probably of her child, she came to Braintree and married, secondly, the Rev. Henry Flynt of that town. There is an excellent account the English forbears this family and the early generations in New England in The Register, Vol 53 (1899), pp. 92,186, 289 which is the basis of this paper.
"Charles Hoars, Jr., brewer and wool merchant, of Gloucester, England, son a prominent citizenof Gloucester of the the same name, married about1610-12, Joanna Hinksman. Charles made his will 25 Sept. 1638, proved by Joanna his widow 21 Dec. 1638. They had issue Margery (above noted), Thomas, John, Daniel, Leonard and Joanna (above noted). We must now consider this family with care. The widow Joanna came to Braintree about 1642, and brought with her her sons John, Daniel, and Leonard, and her daughters Margery and Joanna. She died in Braintree 21:10 mo.:1661 (Pope, op. cit.).
...
"We now return to John, the second son of Charles and Joanna Hoar. He was born in Gloucester about 1619, and was apprenticed to his father 11 May 1632. He came to New England with his mother and in 1643 was among those able to bear arms in Scituate in Plymouth Colony, the town adjoining Braintree. In 1659 he sold his Scituate lands, and removed to Concord, where he resided until his death in 1704. However, he returned to Braintree for a short period, and as "John Hoar of Braintree, planter", he, together with his wife Alice sold land in Concord to Simon Linde and Thomas Brattle, of Boston 19 Nov. 1678 (Middlesex Deeds, East Cambridge, vol. VI, p. 408). By 5 Aug. 1680, he was back in Concord, and on that date he exchanged land there with Edward Wright and styled himself "of Concord"(ibid., vol. VIII, p. 386). He married, about 1645, Alice ----, and died intestate 2 April 1704. On 22 May 1704 administration of his estate was granted to his son Daniel Hoar of Concord. The probate papers show that Daniel had taken care of his parents since 1683 (Middlesex Probate, East Cambridge, no. 11589). Alice, wife of John Hoar, died before her husband 5 June 1696.
"John and Alice had the following known children: Mary, born ca. 1648, married 21 Oct. 1668, Benjamin Graves; Daniel, gent. of Concord, born in 1650, married, first, Mary Stratton 16 July 1677, and secondly, 16 Oct. 1717, Mary Lee; he had eleven children; Elizabeth, born about 1655, married 23 Dec. 1675 Jonathan Prescott of Lancaster.
"It seems quite certain that Joanna, wife Ezra Morse, must have belonged to this family, and that she was named for the widow Joanna Hoar, who came to Braintree in 1642. Dedham adjoins Braintree and Joanna Morse died in Braintree where Joanna Hoar's two daughters lived. There is no evidence that Thomas Hoar who lived in England ever had any children or that any children of his ever came to New England. There is no evidence that Daniel had any daughter who came here, and there is no evidence that his son ever lived here. There can, therefore, be little doubt that Joanna Hoar, wife Ezra Morse, was an unrecorded child John Hoar born while he lived in Scituate about 1645-50, as all the children John Hoar are not surely known."3
"The question to be considered is the parentage Joanna Hoar, wife Ezra Morse.
