Daniel Olds was born on 5 Apr 1759 at Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut.2,3 He was the son of James Ould and Sarah Kingsley.1 Daniel Olds married Lois Stanley on 15 Sep 1780.4,3 Daniel Olds was buried at Sunset View Cemetery, Jonesville, Hillsdale County, Michigan.5 He died on 16 Sep 1836 at Scipio, Hillsdale County, Michigan, at age 77.6,7
On 27 Sep 1832, Daniel Olds, age 73 and infirm, of Lenawe County, Michigan Territory, appeared before Benaniah Jones, Jr., Justice of the Peace, and made an affadavit for his pension application under the Act of 7 June 1832. His pension file contains a very detailed record of his Revolutionary War service.
"On the first of June 1776 I enlisted as a soldier for one year in a Regiment raised by the State of Connecticut. ... I returned home to my native place in Ashford Con., on the first of June 1777. I enlisted again into a company commanded by Capt. John Keyes of Ashford ... ". It was during this time he served with "John Olds a brother of mine". Later, he served as a sergeant -- "Capt. Squire Hills a neighbor to my father told me that if I would list and were called out I should do the duty of a Sergeant
"I was born according to the record of my age at Ashford, Windham Co., Connecticut on the 5th day of April 1759. In the year 1780 I mooved[sic] to Berkshire Massachusetts In the year 1812 I remooved[sic] to Painesville, Geauga County, Ohio where I lived untill In the year 1831 I remooved to Jonesville Linawe County Michigan Territory and that by reason of infirmity and Bodily health I am not able to go before the Court of Record of Lenawe Co. Territory aforesaid to make the necessary affadavit Pursuant to the Requisition of the Law Prescribed"
For proof of his birth, he cited a transcript of a manuscript of his father. He was living in Ashford, Connecticut, when he went into service.
His pension was entered on the roll of Michigan Territory, to commence 4 March 1831 at the rate of $80 for 16 months service as a sergeant and $26.66 for 8 months service as a private. It was first paid on 25 Sep 1833 to include $266.65 in arrears and a semi-annual payment of $53.33.
Included in the file is a Family Record (page 677) from a Bible titled "Marriages" and recording only "Daniel Olds Married to Lois Stanly Ashford Con., Jun 15th 1780." The day and year have been written over, perhaps to make them clearer. In March 1845, Benjamin C. Simmons, clerk of Ashford, Connecticut, certified that Ashford had no record of the marriage of Daniel Olds and Lois Stanley. On 15 May 1845, Lois Olds of Hillsdale County, Michigan, widow of Daniel Olds, late of said county, and Israel D. Morly presented the record and certified it to be from the family Bible of said Daniel Olds, now in the possession of Lois Olds, and in the handwriting of James Olds, son of Daniel and Lois. Lois Olds of Jonesville, Hillsdale County, Michigan, age 83, on 8 Sep 1845 applied under the 7 July 1838 Pension Act (also cited as 4 July 1836) as widow of Daniel Olds, deceased, former resident of Jonesville. They had married on 15 June 1780, and he had died 16 Sep 1836 in Scipio Township, Hillsdale County. She also applied for increased pensions under various later Acts and Joint Resolutions. In her application of 20 November 1849, she stated that she was 87 years old.
On 24 March 1855, Lois Jones of Jonesville, daughter of Lois Olds, deceased, who was the widow of Daniel, a pensioner under the Act of 1832, appointed C. W. Bennett to represent the heirs in pension matters. Lois Olds had died 7 Sep 1854 and the only surviving children were Daniel Olds, Dexter Olds, Kingsley Olds, Jeremy Olds and Lois Jones.3
On 27 Sep 1832, Daniel Olds, age 73 and infirm, of Lenawe County, Michigan Territory, appeared before Benaniah Jones, Jr., Justice of the Peace, and made an affadavit for his pension application under the Act of 7 June 1832.
