Francine Bagwell has sent me her good report of information relating to (or possibly relating to) Samuel Hawkins as follows:
"Notes for SAMUEL HAWKINS: ...
"As stated previously, Samuel does not appear on the federal census for Burke County in 1800. In a book entitled "Burke County, North Carolina Records 1755-1821" by Edith Warren, Huggins, Vol. 4, includes tax records as follows:
"No Date. Pre-1800. Capt. Dobson's Co. (Acreage & Polls)
          (Poor, torn, faded.)

This is a partial listing. (I tried finding some of the names on the 1800 census, but with very little success.) There were several listings for tax purposes, all undated, but saying pre-1800. These included Capt. Joseph Young's Co., West of the Blue Ridge; Capt. White's Co; Capt. Dobson's Co; Capt. Newland's Co; No Company Listed (probably Capt. Austin's Co.); Capt. Austin's Co. (not legible, with only 10 names partially read); Capt. Hemphill's Co. (not legible); Capt. Morrison's Co; Capt. Laughron's Co. (acreage, mostly on Muddy Creeke, Young's Fork and Beaver Dam) (This one included several Mashburn families, Micajah Vaughn, Stroud families, John Finger, Robt. Woody, James Brite, etc.); and Capt. (Mont)fort's Co.
"Also listed in Ms. Warren's book are tax lists for 1815. Under the "List of Taxable Property within Capt. Dobson's District" are "...........; John P. Cobb 100 (100 marked through) 50 both joining acres lying on the Garden Creek........; Peter Ledforde Snr 150 acres lying on Toms Creek one other 150 Do Joining the above........; Hyat (?) (The Cobb family is connected to the Zachariah Spencer family of Lincoln County.)
"Samuel Hawkins first appears on the 1810 census for Burke County, North Carolina and is listed at over 45 years of age. The family includes an older female age 26-44, one male 16-25, one male 10-15, one male under 10 and one female under 10. The next family on the census is Zachariah Hawkins age 26-44 with wife and one male child under 10. Cemetery records indicate that Zachariah is the son of Samuel. The next family to Zachariah is Isacc Hawkins which includes two adult men age 26-44 and two adult women age 16-25 and one male child under 10.
"(On the 1810 census, Samuel's household includes the older female 26-44 which could be Samuel's wife; but if so, the age appears off. The male 16-25 would probably be Charles. The records also indicate a male born 1795-1800, a male born 1800-1810, and a female born 1800-1810; these could be children or grandchildren. Isacc's household includes two adult males and two adult females and one child; this could possibly be Isacc and wife and John and wife.)
"Augustine Hawkins and his descendants were already in Burke County before the 1800's, but to date, no connection has been established between the two lines of Hawkins.
"The 1820 Burke County census includes Samuel age over 45 with a female over 45, one male 26-45, one male 16-26, and two females 16-26. The census also shows Zachariah and his family. Living close to Zachariah now is John Hawkins and family. Isaac is no longer listed in the area. There is also a Joseph Hawkins and Abner Hawkins listed, but it has not been determined if they are related to this line or possibly to Augustine Hawkins' line.
"The 1830 Burke County census for the 3rd and 4th Regiment area include Elizabeth Hawkins (40-50); this appears to be Zachariah's family. Also listed are John Hawkins (40-50), Charles Hawkins (40-50), Robert Hawkins (20-30), and Sarah Hawkins (70-80) (this may possibly be Samuel's wife).
"The 1840 Burke County census lists John, Charles and Zachariah all living close to each other. On the 1840 census, Thomas Hawkins and family are listed. Thomas may or may not be the son of Zachariah; his age fits the age of one of Zachariah's sons and he names his first son Zachariah Spencer Hawkins.
"On the 1850 McDowell County census, Charles and Zachariah's families live next door to each other.
"Based on census findings alone, I speculate that John, Zachariah, Isaac and Charles are siblings or closely related.
"Barbara McClanahan, a descendant of John Hawkins, has recently found two land records for Burke County in 1803 and 1807. The witnesses to the surveys were John Hawkins and Zachariah Hawkins. The witnesses were normally the chain carriers and these were frequently the sons of the grantee."4

On 20 Feb 1961, at the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh, I made the following notes on the Burke County estate papers for Samuel Hawkins.
Samuel Hawkins, dec'd, widow Sarah 19 Oct 1831
A court order for the widow's dower was made 14 Aug 1831.
Sarah Hawkins' petition stated: "Samuel Hawkins dec'd some years ago intestate having [should that be "leaving? -- DWO] your petitioner his widow --- [her??] number of children his heirs at law died seized and posessed of two tracts of of land, one lying on Muddy Creek adjoining the lands of John --?-- and Abraham Corpening containing one hundred acres ... the other tract lying on Hawkins Creek branch of Waters of the Catawba" ... "your petitioner states that Zachariah Hawkins was appointed administrator on the rights and credits for the said Samuel Hawkins dec'd who has taken possession of same ...."

I don't get the math. It is most consistent with 1/3 to the widow and equal shares to 9 others. [E. g. (2/3)*128.98/9 = 9.55 and other combinations of the numbers have not helped me.]5,6
