Zelotus S. Hills was born on 25 Jun 1832 at Palmer, Massachusetts.2 He was the son of Cyrus Hills and Amanda Olds.1 Zelotus S. Hills died on 24 Nov 1911 at Morris, Illinois, at age 79.2
     His obituary states:
     "DEATH CALLS Z. S. HILLS
"Aged Princeton Lawyer Dies Friday at Morris Hospital
"Buried Sunday at Oakland
"Resided in Bureau County Many Years, Teaching School and Practicing Law
"Z. S. Hills was born in Palmer, Mass., June 25, 1832; died at Morris, Ill., November 24, 1911, aged 79 years, 4 months and 29 days. His parents were Cyrus and Amanda (Olds) Hills; his father was a native of Connecticut, a farmer by occupation. He moved to Illinois in 1843, settling at LaMoille, Bureau county. Zolotes [sic] was then a lad of eleven years. He continued his education in the schools of Bureau county, and in Smith's seminary at Princeton. By his great thirst for knowledge and close application to study, he soon became well qualified for the profession of teaching which he followed for twenty-ive years in Bureau county. He was principal of the schools at Neponset, Princeton, LaMoille and Ohio. This brought him in close touch with the educational interests and progress in this part of the state.
"In 1879 Mr. Hills engaged in the drug business in Ohio, Ill., and continued in this business until 1896. During part of this time he read law and in November, 1897, he was admitted to the bar and began proctice in Princeton, where he soon had a good business.
"In 1861 Mr. Hills was united in marraige to Miss Susan A. Hanover, of LaMoille. Mrs. Hills died in Princeton, Illl., March 1905, leaving one son Fred P. Hills now of Morris, Ill. Mr. Hills was a man of strong convictions; he sought to know the truth. He preferred to take the untrodden paths; if he went wrong it was because he was experimenting, not because he was not honestly seeking the truth. He was honest, truthful and kind, abhorring the deceptive, admiring the genuiine. He had great admiration for the men who stood for the higher and nobler things of life.
"He remarked to a friend one time 'I cannot afford to miss that Men's class at the Methodist church; it means so much to me; it stands for the greater things in life.'
'We live in deeds, not years,
In thoughts, not breaths,
In feelings, not in figures on the dial,
We should count time by heart-throbs.
He most lives, who thinks most,
Feels noblest, and acts the best.'
"He leaves to mourn their loss, his son and family, P. Fred Hills, of Morris, Ill. his brothers Winchell Hill[sic], Oregon, Ill; Elijah J. Hil[sic]l, Colorado Springs, and Lewis O. Hills, of California, with other relatives and friends.
"The funeral was held at the residence of Andrew Swanzy, on Euclid avenue, Sunday afternoon, Nov. 26, at 2'oclock, conducted by Rev. B. Barret Evans, pastor of the first Methodist ..." [remainder missing from my photocopy].3
     His obituary states:
"DIED AT MORRIS. Z. S. Hills Finally Succumbs to An Illness of Several Months' Duration.
"From the Princeton Record.
"The city was saddened Friday morning when a telegram was received stating that Z. S. Hills, one of Bureau county's oldest residents, had passed away at a hospital in Morris that morning at about six o'clock. Mr. Hills has been in ill health for a couple of years back, but his death was hastened by what the doctors called hypostatic pneumonia. The body was brought to Princeton Sunday morning on the 10:30 car and was taken to the home of Andrew Swanzy, an old friend of the deceased. The funeral services were held at this place Sunday afternoon at 2:30. Rev. B. B. Evans of the M. E. church conducted the services, which were attended by a host of sorrowing relatives and friends. Mr. Hills had been a member of the county bar and many lawyers attended the funeral in a body, to pay their last respects to their departed fellow-worker. Mr. Hills had also been a Woodman, during life, and the Woodmen accompanied the body to the cemetery and conducted services at the grave. Burial was at Oakland cemetery.
"Z. S. Hills was born in Palmer, Mass., June 25, 1832, the son of Cyrus and Amanda (Olds) Hills. His father was a farmer by occupation, and in the year 1843, removed with his family to Illinois, settling near LaMoille where he bought land and began farming. The deceased had had some schooling before coming to Illinois. He continued his education in the scools of Bureau county and later prepared himself for a teacher, in Smith's Seminary, Princeton. He became well qualified for this profession which he followed for about 25 years. At one time he was principal of the schools at Neponset and Princeton, afterward at LaMoille and lastly in Ohio. He was thus closely associated with the educational progress of this part of the state, but at length he retired from professional labors and from 1879 to 1896 he conducted a drug store in Ohio. For many years, however, he was interested in law, and in 1896 he gave up his store, he took up ... [portion missing from my photocopy] funeral from out of town were: S. W. Pomery and wife, C. D. Pomery, A. W. Shifflett and wife, Will Fordham and wife, M. R. Dewey, Mrs. Anna Spencer and John Neis of Ohio, Ill; John Hensel, wife and daughter, of Walnut; Attorney N. J. Demerath, wife and son, of Kewanee; Dr. V. E. Frizzell and wife of LeMoille.
The following members of the order of Knights of Pythias attended in a body from Morris; G. J. Foxford, business partner of P. F. Hills; Horace Harrod, Will Davis, Fred Ashton, William Ostrom, Arthur Meyer, H. E. Kutz, George Cork, Lincoln Kay."2
