Gamaliel Smith Olds was born on 11 Feb 1777 at Granville, Hampden County, Massachusetts.1,2 He was the son of Benjamin Olds and Via Smith.1 Gamaliel Smith Olds married Julia Whitney, daughter of Jonas Whitney and Tamar Houghton, on 27 Apr 1811 at Marlborough, Windham, Vermont.1,3 Gamaliel Smith Olds died on 13 Jun 1848 at Circleville, Ohio, at age 71.1
"... Gamaliel Olds graduated from Williams College, 1801; was tutor there until 1805; was first professor of mathematics and natural philosophy there until 1808; ordained Presbyterian minister at Granville, Mass., Nov. 10, 1813; preached there three years; professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at University of Vermont, 1819/20; at Amherst College, 1820/1; professor at University of Georgia for several years; moved to Circleville, Ohio, in 1841."4 On 6 Sep 1812, at Marlborough, he took the Freeman's Oath , as required by the 1777 Constitution of Vermont.5
"Gamaliel Smith Olds was born in the part of Granville, Mass., which is now Tolland, February 11, 1777. His parents, Benjamin and Via (Smith) Olds, were originally from Suffield, but removed first to Granville, and afterwards, when this son was about fifteen years of age, [t]o Marlborough, Vt., where he resided several years previous to his going to College. He was graduated at Williams College in 1801, and was a Tutor therefrom 1803 to 1805. In 1806, he was chosen Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy in the same institution. This office he held, discharging its duties with great ability and efficiency, for two years, when, in consequence of a difficulty that occurred in the College, rendering it inexpedient for him to remain, he tendered his resignation.
"He engaged now in the study of Theology. He commenced his course under Dr. West of Stockbridge, and in 1810 became a student in the Theological Seminary at Andover; having united with the church at Marlborough, the place of his father's residence, about the beginning of the same year. On the 19th of November, 1813, he was ordained as colleague pastor with the Rev. Dr. Newton of the First church in Greenfield, Mass. The council first called to ordain Mr. Olds refused to proceed, on the ground that one of the clergymen who had been invited, and who took his seat as a member, was reputed a Unitarian. A second council, however, was soon called, consisting entirely of those who harmonized in their theological views; and by them Mr. Olds was duly set apart to the ministry,—the Rev. Dr. Samuel Austin of Worcester preaching the sermon.
"Mr. Olds remained at Greenfield about three years, and was dismissed in 1816, a short time before the death of his colleague. This was with a view to his accepting an appointment to a Professorship in Middlebury College; but, in consequence of some disagreement between himself and some of the officers of the College, he never entered upon the duties of the office. He wrote, and by advice of the Franklin Association, published, a " Statement of facts" in the case. From 1819 to 1821, he was Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy in the University of Vermont; and from 1821 to 1825, was Professor of the same branches in Amherst College. During several succeeding years, he held the same office in the University of Georgia. After returning to the North, he resided for some time at Saratoga Springs, and at one or two other places in the State of New York; and in the autumn of 1841, removed to Circleville, Ohio, where he spent the rest of his days.
"From this time, he was the subject of much bodily infirmity, though he preached frequently for his brethren in the neighbourhood, and generally attended the meetings of the Presbytery of Columbus, of which, however, he never became a member. His death was the result of a distressing casualty. On Saturday, the 2d of June, 1848, he left home for the purpose of supplying two vacant churches in the town of Bloomfield, about twelve miles distant from Circleville. There he passed the Sabbath, preaching in two different places with more than common vigour and fervour. On Monday morning, he started for home; and when about a quarter of a mile from the place where he had spent the night, his horse took fright, and starting to the side of the road, threw him from his vehicle down a precipitous bank, a distance of ten or twelve feet. Two of his ribs were broken, and he experienced other severe injuries. He was taken to an inn about two miles distant from the place where he was hurt, on the way towards home, and being unable to proceed farther, was left there. His wife was sent for, and the best medical aid was immediately called, but the injury could not be repaired. He lingered in great pain until the 13th, when, in perfect tranquillity and submission, he expired.
"Mr. Olds left his library, consisting of about three hundred volumes, at the disposal of the Presbytery of Columbus, to be given by them to some Theological Seminary under the care of the Old School General Assembly. They were accordingly given, in the spring of 1856, to the Alleghany Seminary.
"Mr. Olds was married in 1812 to Julia, daughter of Deacon Jonas Whitney, of Marlborough, Vt. They had four children,—three of whom died in infancy, and the remaining one in the prime of his manhood. Mrs. Olds died in 1851.
"The publications of Mr. Olds are an Inaugural Oration at Williams College, 1806; the Substance of several Sermons upon the subjects of Episcopacy and Presbyterian parity, 1815; Statement of facts relative to the appointment to the office of Professor of Chemistry in Middlebury College, 1818."
[Referencing Packard's Hist. of the Franklin Association.—MSS. from Rev. Dr. Humphrey, Rev. Charles Scott, Rev. M. A. Saokett, and Rev. G. L. Kalb.]6 To this may be added that he earned both the A.B. (1801) and A. M. (1804) from Williams College. "He was a graduate of the Andover Theological Seminary, 1810, and settled Pastor of the Congregational Church in Greenfield, Mass. It is supposed that he came to this place with his parents from Granville, Mass., when he was quite a child. His parents settled and died here in advanced age. He was educated during their residence in this town. He died in Circleville, Ohio, June 13, 1848, aged 69, and was much esteemed in life for his social qualities and especially for his distinguished scholarship and scientific acquirements."7

"Mr. Olds was thrown from his buggy on Monday, the 6th of June, when returning to Circleville from the place were he had preached on the Sabbath; but unable to proceed further than Bloomfield, he was there confined till his death. Though his sufferings were great, his mind was clear and composed in his last moments, and with Christian resignation and cheerful hope through the blood of atomement, he seemed to sleep in Jesus, and to enter into the joy of his Lord.
"Mr. Olds was possessed of more that ordinary talent and acquirement; and as a preacher was evangelical and edifying. He was a native of Connecticut, and a graduate of Williams College, Mass., in which institution he was afterwards appointed professor. He also served in this capacity at other places, especially at Amherst, when he lost hs health. He resided for several years previous to his death in Circleville. -- Cousin."11

George Olds appeared on the census of 1 Jun 1900 at Momence Township, Kankakee County, Illinois, as follows:
"George Olds has been a farmer and a prominent character in his vicinity. In December, 1907, he had the misfortune to slip and fall on the icy street, breaking his hip, from which he was in January, 1908, suffering severely. He has been a great help in preparing the records of his mother's descendants and has responded promptly and intelligently to every call for data. With his aged wife, Sarah J., he was living January, 1908, at the old homestead at Momence, Ill., R F. D. 1."9
His obituary states: "GEORGE OLDS
"HAD LIVED HERE OVER 61 YEARS
"Is Survived by Widow and Six Children—Funeral Held on Wednesday from the Hess School House Was Very Largely Attended
"George Olds, one of the old settlers of Momence township, died at his home three miles east of this city, on Monday evening, December 4, at the age of 83 years and 20 days. For the past few years he had been gradually failing, and yet his death came as a surprise to his many friends.
"George Olds was born at Bombay, New York, at what is known as the Colesprings settlement, on November 14, 1828. In 1832 he came to the far west with his parents who stopped at Michigan City, Ind. They remained there until the next year, going to Northern Illinois and locating on what was known as the Mongoconon prairie near Elgin. Later the family moved to Stillwell prairie where they built the second house in that section where they lived five years. The subject of this sketch later took up a claim, the land being where the city of Elgin now stands.
"In 1850 Mr. Olds came to Momence and filed a claim on a tract of land up the river, on which is located the Olds’ Landing, known to all. Here he resided many years, bringing his land under cultivation through hard and incessant labor. On march 14, 1860, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Jane Olds, and together they lived on the old farm for almost forty years, then moving to the present home. Mr. and Mrs. Olds were the parents of seven children, as follows. Abe OldGeorge Olds of Valparaiso, Ind., Mrs. W. Lease and Mrs. Herman Swanson of this city, Mrs. James Read of Deedsville, Ind., Mrs. May Thayer of Chicago, Mrs. Bertha McCain of Stockland, Ill., and Em who died a few years ago. The wife and mother also survives, together with numerous near relatives.
"Mr. Olds during his long years of residence in this township, was well known and liked by everyone. The many neighborly acts of his younger life were not forgotten in mature years, and for these he will long be remembered.
"Funeral services were held at the Hess school house at 1:30 o’clock on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Connor of the M. E. church of this city; burial in the Shrontz cemetery. The music was furnished by a quartette composed of Mrs. Levi Sharkey, Mrs. Ruth Cone, C. L. Tabler, and C. A. Violet. There were many beautiful floral offerings from relatives and friends."10
