Martha C. Moulton was born in May 1843 at Jay, Maine.1 She married Lewis O. Hills, son of Cyrus Hills and Amanda Olds, on 20 Oct 1863.1 Martha C. Moulton died on 13 Jul 1887 at age 44.1
     Her obituary states:
"Mrs. Martha C. Hills, wife of L. O. Hills, was born in Jay, Maine, in May, 1843, and departed this life at her home in this place on Friday of last week, July 13th, at 2 o'clock p.m.
"Never before has it been our duty to chronicle so sad an event as is that connected with the death of Mrs. Hills. Previous to her sickness, all the children had been confined to their beds with typho-malaria fever and were in a critical condition. Her entire time was devoted to giving them every possible attention for several weeks, which heavily taxed both body and mind. The strain was too great and about four weeks ago she was taken to her bed a victim to the same disease as had befallen the children -- typho-malaria fever. Her sickness from the start was not severe, and she was not considered dangerous until a day or two before her death. She was reconciled to the inevitable, and had on the afternoon previous called her husband to the bedside and told him the end was near. She had been for years and[sic] active church member and a devoted christian, was a true friend, a loving wife and a devoted mother was was beloved by all who knew her. Mrs Hills, nee Moulton, as stated above was born in Jay, Maine, but early in life removed with her parents to Scarboro, Maine where the balance of her girlhood days were spent. At the age of twenty, October 20, 1863, she ws married to Lewis O. Hills, of Arlington, Illinois. Accompanying Mr. Hills to their new home in what was then a new country they have lived in Arlington until moving to this place in December last. It would be impossible for Mr. Hills to receive a more severe blow than [has] just befallen him. With his children in a critical condition, and as yet unaware of their mother's death, he feels he alone must bear the burden of bereavement and sorrow. Friends have done possibly as much as friends could, but under the circumstances this does little toward alleviating his sorrow over the loss of his beloved wife, or arresting his anxiety about his children.
"The entire community unite in sympathy with him, and trust that the pangs of sorrow may not be thrust deeper into his heart by the loss of other members of his family. The remains of the deceased were intered[sic] in the cemetery west of town Saturday forenoon at ten o'clock."1

James W. Mullinax

M, (c 1800 - 3 Jun 1879)
Last Edited4 Mar 2016
James W. Mullinax was born c 1800.1 He married (1) Elendra Capps.2 James W. Mullinax married (2) Mary Moore. James W. Mullinax died on 3 Jun 1879.3 He was buried at Capps Family Cemetery, River Falls, Greenvile County, South Carolina.4,5
James W. Mullinax appeared on the census of 1830 at Greenvile County, South Carolina, as follows: Mullenacks, James: 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 15-20.6
Otto B. Mullinax suggests that this James Mullinax may have been a son of Johnson Mullinax7 who was born about 1782 and is listed in the census records of Greenville County, SC, from 1800 to 1860.8 Files 4 and 5 of the Spartanburg County Court of General Sessions at the SC archives show that Johnson Mullinax, Rebecca Mullinax, Hiram Mullinax, and Celia Hewitt were charged with assault and battery against Jane Grant (or Jean Grant). The alleged assault was on 6 Dec. 1831. They had come to her house “in a riotous manner”. (file 5) John Wofford filed complaint against Johnston Mullinax and Polly his wife and two daughters Rebeckah and Elizabeth claiming they “did assault the sd. John Wofford”. William Ramply was bondsman for Jean Grant; James Hewett, Sr., and Gideon Mullinax were bondsmen for Sely Hewitt and also for Hiram Mullinax. Johnston Hembree was bondsman for Johnston Mullinax. William W. Hembree was bondsman for Johnston Mullinax, wife Polly and daughters Rebecca and Elizabeth. They were convicted on the 1st Monday of March 1832. Johnson Mullinax was put in jail for a week; Rebecca and Elizabeth were fined; Polly’s name was marked off. The case is marked “Johnston Mullinax, laborer, Rebecca Mullinax and Elizabeth Mullinax, spinsters, ‘late of the district aforesaid’ assault on John Wofford 9 Jan. 1832 signed by Z. Edwards, foreman, Guilty Fall Term 1832". (File 4)

Otto Mullinax lists him as James N. Mullinax, b. ca 1803, from the census records of 1830, 1840.7

Hall2 says of this man: “James Wofford Mullinax, Sr., (w)as always called (Jimmy.) Jimmie’s father came from Virginia and settled in the northwest part of Greenville county, SC. Jimmie was married two times. His first wife was Ellendra Caps and his second wife was Polly Moore. It is not known which of his six children were by which wife. He was a hunter, farmer and a mechanic. He was the father of six children - Matthew, Marion, Thomas, John, William and Sarah Ann.” James was born April 1801 in Spartanburg County, SC, and died 3 June 1879 in Greenville Co., SC. He and Ellendra Capps were buried in the Capps Cemetery at Cleveland, SC. They were married about 1821 in Greenville Co., SC. James Mullinax and Polly Moore were married at the old home place, Cleveland, SC, in 1845.
James W. Mullinax appeared on the census of 6 Aug 1850 at Greenville County, South Carolina, as follows:
162/162 James Mullinax, 50, 500 real estate, farmer, b. SC
      Mary , 40, b. SC
      Thomas , 18, laborer, b. SC
      William , 16, laborer, b. SC
      Elizabeth , 11, b. SC
      Johnson , 10, b. SC
      John , 8, b. SC
      Jones , 5, b. SC
      Permelia , 3, b. SC
      Martha , 1, b. SC
      Ann Moore , 65, b. No. Carolina.9
If, in fact, Wofford is the correct middle name for Joseph W. Mulllinax, there may be connections to that family. Possible connections include Rev. John Mullinax and his wife Rebecca. John was born in 1769 and died in 1836.10 His wife, Rebecca Wofford was born 4 Aug 1774 and she died 26 July 1858.11 She is mentioned briefly in a Wofford family history as: "Rebecca, the second daughter [of Capt. Joseph and Martha Llewellyn Wofford], married a Methodist preacher by the name of Mullinax who was admitted to the South Carolina Conference at or near the same time with the Rev. Benjamin Wofford, his brother-in-law. She died at a very advanced age, leaving no children. At the time of her death she lived in Spartanburg, in the house afterwards occupied by Prof. W. K. Blake, quite near the home of her brother. The writer is under the impression that both she and her husband are buried at Fairforest."12 The will of John "Mullinnix of District of Spartanburg" , made 11 July 1836 and probated 7 Sep 1836, names wife Rebecca and "my brother Absalom Mullinnix", a Mathew "Mullinnix" and many other heirs, but no children.13 Although given little attention in the Wofford Family History, Rebecca is apparently remembered in the name of Rebecca Mullinax Wofford (married James T. Foster), daughter of Dr. Benjamin Wofford.14 I have found no documentation for the suggestion that the wife of Johnson Mullinax was Elizabeth Wofford.
James W. Mullinax appeared on the census of 9 Sep 1860 at Lima, Gap Creek Division, Greenville County, South Carolina, as follows:
     973/858 James W. Mullinax, 59, farmer, $960 personal estate, b. SC
