"Somewhere along about 1898 three families came up in covered wagons. They came through Minneapolis, Brainerd, and Gull Lake and settled in Pequot or stayed one winter on Long Lake, east of Pequot. Then Dad moved to Mission. This is where the Big Pine emptied into the Mississippi. My Dad worked in a saw mill. After being there a short time, the Olds family moved out to a logging camp about three miles east of Outing."
... "My oldest brothers were Alvin and Elvin, then me, then Mae, Burl and the youngest was Jimmie in that order. My father came from the southern part of the state and my mother came from Indiana, her maiden name being Goldsbury. Her parents settled what used to be Mission and had quite a farm there. My grandfather later moved to Pequot and lived to be 90 years old.
"All of us Olds boys had nicknames. They gave me the title of "Babe," and I don't know why. Elvin was always known as "Pussy" all his life and Alvin's moniker was "Snieder". Lots of people, or most everybody, never knew us by any other names."
... "After we were married, I worked on the State Highway and bought the Newlon Harrington homestead, which was west of the George Harrington homestead, just over the county line. We lived there a number of years and then moved to Shovel Lake.
"I later got a job in the mine at Calumet and moved there where my first wife passed away. Later, when I reached 65, and was retired, I bought a home out of Outing and lived alone until I married Mrs. Emily Scot a few years ago."8

"Franklin Marcellus Olds, Lawyer, was born in Port Byron, Cayuga county, New York, August 20, 1851, son of David Osmun and Rosanna Hortense (Seaman) Olds. He is seventh in direct line of descent from Robert Olds, who settled in Windsor, Connecticut, in 1668; a later ancestor, Ezekiel Phinehas Olds, removed to Vermont in 1795, and in that state were born his son and grandson, the later being David O. Olds. The subject of this sketch was at an early age in attendance at the public schools of Auburn, Cayoga county, and in preparation for College he pursued the course of study in the academical high school in Auburn. From Williams College, which he entered at the age of eighteen, graduating with the highest honors of hs class, he holds two degrees; Bachelor of Arts, received at graduation in 1873, and Master of Arts, taken in course three years later. He studied law in the office of Hon. Cortlandt Parker of Newark, and at the Columbia Law School, where he graduated Bachelor of Laws, in 1877; was admitted to the New Jersey Bar as attorney in 1876, and as counsellor in 1879, and has followed this profession with conspicuous success in the City of Newark. Mr. Olds is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He was married December 25, 1878 to Catherine Austin Walker, adopted daughter of S. D. Lauter of Newark; Mrs. Olds died February 20, 1897." This article includes a a portrait of Franklin M. Olds.9
Another biographical summary reports slightly differing details:
"Franklin Marcellus Olds, Newark, N. J., traces his ancestry through residents of Vermont and Massachusetts to Windsor, Conn., where Robert Olds settled in 1668. His father and paternal grandfather were natives of Vermont. Mr. Olds is the son of David Osman and Rosanna Hortense (Seaman) Olds, and was born in Port Byron, Cayuga county, N. Y., August 20, 1851. ...
"Mr. Olds has also engaged with equal success in several commercial ventures and enterprises. As a pastime he has given much attention to forestry, arborculture, and landscape gardening. He is enabled to gratify his taste in these directions by the ownership of a fine country estate at Mountain Dale, Sullivan County, N. Y., in which locality Mr. Olds's mother was reared, her father Rev. Isaac Seaman, late of Middletown, N. Y., having settled there for a time.
"On Christmas day, 1878, Mr. Olds was married to Miss Catherine Austin Walker, adopted daughter of S. D. Lauter, of Newark, N. J. She died February 20, 1897, and their only child, Jane Louisa Olds, born September 29, 1879, died November 2, 1884."10
On 12 Dec 1901, the New York Times published a report stating that Franklin M. Olds, retired lawyer, defendant in a breach of promise suit for $75,000, had consented to the appointment of a receiver for the estate of his deceased wife, of which he was the administrator. The request was made a couple of weeks earlier by Mrs. Elizabeth M. Vracner, sister of the late Mrs. Olds, claiming that the interest of the heirs was being jeopardized by the manner is which Mr. Olds was handling the estate.11
"Interrupted a Wedding.
"New York: Franklin Marcellus Olds and Miss Agnese Aprile stood in front of a flower-decked altar under a bower of palms in Lyric Hall to be married. The ceremony was interrupted by a lawyer's process server in a suit for $20,000 damages. Another girl alleged breach of promise. The groom read it. The minister remained silent until Mr. Olds stuffed the paper into his pocket, and in a low tone told him that he could proceed, as there was no valid objection. Dr. Hall continued the ceremony to the end."12
"Tried to Stop the Wedding
"By Serving a Writ, but the Ceremony Took Place.
"New York, March 11. --- Franklyn Marcellus Olds and Miss Agnes Aprile stood in front of a flower-decked altar under a bower of palms in Lyrie Hall. As Rev. Charles Cuthbert Hall, of the Union Theological Seminary, was pronouncing the words to join them in wedlock, he asked:
"'Does any man know cause why these two should not be united?'
"'I do, shouted a young man in the crowd.

"Franklin Marcellus Olds, a Former Auburnian, Defendant in Breach of Promise Suit
"Franklin Marcellus Olds, once an inmate of the Cayuga County Asylum for Destitute Children here, a man who by diet of persistent effort became a successful lawyer and who now resides in Newark, N. J., has come into unpleasant notoriety as a result of a breach of promise suit against him in which big damages are asked. The party plaintiff, it will be remembered, caused a sensation at the time of Mr. Old's [sic] marriage by endeavoring to prevent it while the ceremony was actually in progress. Of the suit, Saturday's issue of the New York Sun contained the following:
"Trial of a suit in which Olga Lansdorff, who confesses herself to be an actress, asks for $25,000 for breach of promise from Franklin Marcelllus Olds, a retired N. J. lawyer, was begun yesterday before Judge Wallace and a jury in the United States Circuit court. It is a long time since there has been a case of this kind in the Federal courts, so everybody was naturally interested. Many men, all dusty from the rooms in which the ancient documents are tended, came down for a little relaxation. Gallant commisioner Shields asserted his privilege and, instead of sending an assistant, came up himself to act as the judge's clerk.
"Miss Landorff was the first witness. She is from Vienna. She is blonde, with black eyebrows and an elaborate complexion. Her lavender hat was like a Strauss waltz.
"'Would the lady's beauty influence any of you jurors?' asked Mr. Corwin, counsel for Mr. Olds.
"'I am very susceptible,' announced Juror Hicks.
"'I'll accept you for your honesty,' replied the lawyer, mysteriously.
"Nathaniel Cowen, of Howe and Hummel, stated the plaintiff's case and examined her.
"'Where do you live and how old are you?' was the order in which he put the questions. She lives at 18 West Sixtieth Street, 'and I am 25 years old,' she said.
"'I was staying at the Scarborough Hotel at Long Branch in July, 1899,' narrated the plaintiff. 'My cousins, the Ashtons, the owners of the hotel, told me Mr. Olds was a widower, and they introduced me to him. He showed me attentions a great deal. He was taking me out all the time to nice entertainments, and he asked my cousins' permission to escort me to a ball. After that he sent me flowers. He was very fond of me. He called on me eight or 10 times, maybe, in two weeks.
"'On March 11, 1900, he asked me to be his wife. Of course I was surprised and told him I wanted to think it over. Two days later, on the 13th, I said yes.'
"She told how, being ill, Mr. Olds sent her to Europe, paying her expenses. After she returned, she said, the wedding was fixed for Christmas week of 1901. One fine day in September, he wrote her: 'Marry me to-morrow in The Little Church Around the Corner.' She ignored the letter. Mr. Olds then went to Mountaindale and in March, 1901, he married a Miss Aprille.
"This letter, written by the defendant two days after the plaintiff sailed for Europe again on the 13th, was read:
"'MY DEAR, SWEET CHILD: -- I do not want you to scold me, but I am going to see Mr. and Mrs. Ashton. I forgive them. They are your relations and people one need not be ashamed of. I am literally bursting to talk to some friend about my engagement to marry. I must talk to someone. I can't keep it in. I am eager for your cable and your letters. God bless you. -- Your own,
" 'Frank.'

Franklin Marcellus Olds appeared on the census of 4 May 1910 at Fallsburg Township, Sullivan County, New York, as follows:
His 1912 William College obituary states:
"Franklin Marcellus Olds, son of David and Rosanna Hortense Olds, was born at Port Byron, Cayuga County, N. Y., on August 20, 1851. He prepared for college at the Auburn High School, entered Williams and was graduated with the Class of 1873, receiving the valedictory.
"Immediately after graduation he made his way to Newark, N. J., where he entered the office of Hon. Cortlandt Parker, as a clerk and student-at-law. Such clerkship and law studies he followed for the required three years, and on November 9, 1876, after examination, he was licensed to practice in the courts of New Jersey as an attorney-at-law and solicitor in chancery. In the meantime he had studied at the Columbia Law School, and received a degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1877, and on November 6, 1879, he was licensed to practice in New Jersey as a counsellor-at-law. Afterward he was admitted to the federal courts of New York and New Jersey. He opened his office at 721 Broad Street, Newark, and remained until 1902, when on account of failing health he relinquished his practice and took up residence at Mountaindale, N. Y. Here he devoted himself to agriculture and to the improvement of a considerable estate which he purchased there, and in the meantime practiced law to some extent. In this occupation he remained until his death.
"On December 25, 1878, he married Miss Cassie A. Walker of Newark: their only child was Janey Louisa, born September 29, 1879, who died in 1884. Mrs. Olds died in 1897 and on March 10, 1902, he married Miss Agnese Aprile, of New York. The children of this marriage are Genoveffa, born November 4, 1903, and Marcellus Aprile, born June 22, 1906.
"Mr. Olds died at Mountaindale, N. Y., February 27, 1912. His widow and younger daughter and son survive him."16

Birth: 1852 Death: Feb. 27, 1912 Mountain Dale, Sullivan County, New York, USA
Franklin Olds, who died at his home in Mountaindale, Tuesday morning, Feb. 27, was a graduate of Union College. After leaving college he studied law and located in Newark, N.J., where he soon gained a high reputation as a criminal lawyer.
At one time he was considered wealthy, and his real estate in and about Newark was extensive, owning at one time forty houses. About fifteen years ago he gave up his law practice in Newark and invested largely in real estate at Mountaindale, where he mapped out a large tract of land in village lots and put in a regular sewerage system, spending thousands of dollars. His dream of developing Mountaindale into a large town has not been realized, as he restricted all prospective builders to such an extent that they refused to invest there, and as a result he gradually began to lose money, and at the time of his death it is generally conceded that most of his wealth in business at Mountaindale is gone and that his executors will not realize sufficient from his estate to satisfy his creditors. He had his faults, we all have, but there was much in the man to admire in him. While every investment seemed to turn to money in the State of New Jersey for Mr. Olds, his operations in New York were stamped with failure, and in no way could the tide be changed.

Frederick Olds was born on 5 Sep 1808 at Randolph, Windsor County, Vermont.2 He was the son of Joseph (Branch Co. (Mich) pioneer) Olds.1 Frederick Olds married Sally Hill on 4 Nov 1828.2 Frederick Olds died on 23 Dec 1883 at Richfield Township, Genessee County, Michigan, at age 75.3
Frederick Olds appeared on the census of 1840 at Sherwood Township, Branch County, Michigan, as follows:
1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-10, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 40-40.4
Added in pencil: "living in Sherwood, Mich. in 1840; married with wife between 30 and 40, 2 children, boy 10 to 15, girl 5 to 10."1
" Frederick Olds was born in the town of Randolph, Windsor Co., Vt., Sept. 5, 1808. While he was still a babe his father moved to Genesee Co., N. Y.... . Frederick lived with his father until after his marriage, when he started out in life for himself. He worked at the cooper's trade in Middleburg, in Stafford, and in Warsaw. We next find him in Cattaraugus Co., N. Y., where he bought a piece of new land, which he partly cleared. This land he sold, and in 1836 he came to Michigan to find a home where land was cheap. In May of that year he arrived in Macomb County, where he worked at his trade. He next took a job on what was called the Shelby and Detroit Railroad. This proved a failure, and Mr. Olds lost all his earnings. In February, 1838, he moved to Branch County, going with an ox-team, and being ten days on the road. He bought thirty acres of wild land in Union township, built upon it a shanty, and cleared about ten acres. In 1841 he sold, and with an oxteam moved his family into what was then the town of Richfield, Lapeer Co., where he bought eighty-five acres, part of the southeast quarter of section 15. The land was new, not a stick having been cut. There were then but two houses between his place and Flint, and not a house in sight for several years after he came. This farm Mr. Olds has improved and built upon ; and here, under his own vine and fig-tree, he quietly passes the declining years of his life, respected and esteemed by his neighbors and friends as an upright citizen and a true Christian. In polities Mr. Olds is a Republican of the stalwart kind, it never having been a question to which party he belonged or on which side of a political question he stood. Has been justice of the peace many years, overseer and commissioner of highways over twenty years, drain commissioner three years, and Richfield's war supervisor, holding the latter office for seven years. He was active in sending soldiers to the field, and deserves much of the credit for saving the town from the draft. He has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for forty-two years. On the 4th day of November, 1828, he married Miss Sally Hill, daughter of John Hill. She was born in Bloomfield, Ontario Co., N. Y., Jan. 13, 1808. There have been born to them the following children : Mortimer M., born Aug. 26,1829,—he married Miss Francis Potter, who was born Dec. 25, 1833; Amanda C, born Sept. 30, 1833, married Nathan Root, who was born Jan. 16, 1823; Althea V., born March 9, 1842, died Feb. 7, 1865, married Samuel Clemens; Wilbur E., born April 20, 1850, died May 21, 1857."2

"Architect Olds is Found Dead in Doorway of Home
"Stricken With Acute Heart Failure and Succumbs While Standing in the Vestibule
....
"Frederick L. Olds, architect, one of the best known men of his profession in the valley, was found dead by his wife in the vestibule of his palatial home at Dorranceton this morning at 8 o'clock. Heart disease was responsible for his sudden demise.
....
"Mr Olds was 60 years of age, being born in 1851. He was the son of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Olds of Circleville, Ohio. He attended the public schools at that place and later learned the architectural business, entering the employ of an Ohio firm.
"He then went into the employ of the government and assisted in the construction of the buildiings at State College, Pa. He located at Wilkes-Barre twenty years ago and had been active in the affairs of the valley ever since. He was married twice. Three children blessed each union. His second wife was Miss Mary Talbot of New York City, whom he married in 1892.
"The deceased built a home at 73 James street, Dorranceton, about ten years ago and for the last five years served as councilman in that borough. He was chairman of the street committee and was a leading factor in having the roads in Dorranceton improved. He was a member of the Wilkes-Barre Lodge of Elks, a member of the Franklin and Westmoreland Clubs and an active worker in the Kingston Presbyterian Church.
"He is survived by his wife and the followng children: William, of New York; Mrs. Hammond Talbot of New York; Joseph, of Philadelphia; Caroline, Kate-Talbot, and Sarah at home."9
Another obituary for Frederick states:
"Word has been received of the death at Kingston, Pa., of Frederick L. Olds on Tuesday. He was brother-in-law of Mrs. Frank P. Forbes of Greenfield, and was a descendant of Rev. Gamaliel Olds, who was for a time the pastor of the First church of Greenfield when it was situated at what is now Long's corners."10 These two obituaries are troublesome because they disagree with the lineage I have presented. The first says that Frederick was the son of Dr. Charles Olds of Circleville [his grandfather]. PERHAPS this is an error for Dr. JOSEPH. The second says that Frederick was a descendant of Rev. Gamaliel Olds which, by my conclusions, he was not. It certainly must be remembered that there were other men name Fred L. Olds, although the ones I have now are not easily confused with this one. Both obituaries name the same six children.
