John Williams was buried on 27 Aug 1578 at St. Mary the Virgin, Wooton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, England.2
In 1897, working from the research of Joseph H. Williams, Governor of Maine, including an 1894 pedigree chart supplied by John Phillips, C. E. of Putney, Surrey entitled "Genealogy of the Cromwell-Williams Families from the Conquest to the Commonwealth", Josiah H. Drummond presented the pedigree of Richard Williams of Taunton, Massachusetts and his connection with Oliver Cromwell. According to Drummond, the John Williams who died at Wooton-under-Edge in 1579, was a son of Richard Williams, born in Rochampton in 1487 and died in 1559 in Monmouthshire. Richards parents were John Williams, Steward of Wimbledon Manor in Surrey and his second wife Margaret Smyth, a granddaughter of Margaret Cromwell. The Williams line is continued back to a Morgan Willliams, son of Howell Williams, Lord of Ribour, and Wenlion, daughter and heiress of Llyne ap Jevan of Rady. The Cromwell line in continued back to Alden de Cromwell who lived in the time of William the Conqueror. The purpose of Drummond's article is to show the connection between Richard Williams of Taunton and Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector, which had been a family rumor in colonial America. Drummond concludes "It is not believed that, in the light of Gov. Williams's researches, the relationship of Richard Williams of Taunton, and the Cromwell family, will again be questioned." However, real proof is missing from this article.3
Holman displays a pedigree, supplied by the College of Arms and headed by John Williams and his brother Edmond. John's children were William of Synwell, John, Hugh, and Frances -- all mentioned in their father's will. William, by his first wife, Jane Shepherd, was the father of Ann who married John Hall, and by his second wife, Jane Woodward, the father of Samuel, Elizabeth, Richard Williams of Taunton, and Jane.1
Holman says the Parish Registers of St. Mary the Virgin, Wotton-under-Edge, begin in 1571 and publishes an abstract of the Williams baptism, marriage and burial entries to 1641, as furnished by the Rector.4
"John Williams of Wotton-under-Edge, co. Gloucester, born place unknown, about 1535, was buried in the churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin, 27 Aug. 1578. His wife, whom he named executrix of his will in 1578, was Theobalde _____ , whether she was the mother of his children, or not, is unknown. Theobalde may have been that Tybboll Williams whose burial is recorded in the Registers of St. Mary the Virgin, 9 Jan 1608.
"Abstract of the will of John Williams of Wotton under Edge in Countie of Gloucester, dated 17 Apryll 1578:

Richard Williams was baptized on 28 Jan 1607 at Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Wooton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, England.3 He was the son of William Williams and Jane Woodward.2 Richard Williams married Frances Deighton, daughter of John Deighton and Jane Bassett, on 11 Feb 1632 at Witcombe Magna, St. Nicholas parish, Gloucester, England.1 Richard Williams died bt 22 Dec 1688 - 15 Sep 1693.4,5 He was buried at Mayflower Hill Cemetery, Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.6
According to Pope's Pioneers of Massachusetts, Richard Williams was a tanner and in Dorchester by 1633. He sold out at Dorchester in 1646 and moved to Taunton. He had a brother Samuel of Essington, Gloucester, England, and a sister Elizabeth in New England and a sister Jane of Whetenhurste, Gloucester, England.7
He probably came to New England later than Pope suggests but moved to Taunton earlier. He was among those able to bear arms at Taunton in 1643.8
Richard Williams "aged about Eighty", made his will 5 May 1686. He named his eldest son Samuel, son Nathaniel, son Joseph, son Thomas, son Benjamin, daughter Elizabeth, daughter Hannah, and beloved wife Frances. The will made all five sons executors and directed them to care for "their said Mother". The original will no longer exists but Holman has printed it from a copy in the books at the Bristol County Probate Registry where it was probated 10 Oct 1693. Samuel, Thomas and Benjamin Williams, all of Taunton, and Richard Stephens were made executors.9

William Williams was born c 1555.2 He was the son of John Williams.1 William Williams married (1) Jane Shepherd on 15 Nov 1585 at Wooton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, England.3 William Williams married (2) Jane Woodward on 4 Dec 1603 at Cam, Gloucestershire, England.4,5
William Williams is named first, as a son to receive his inheritance in 1579, in the 1578 will of John Williams.2
A renewed interest in this Williams family seems to have been sparked by the reports of Henry F. Waters. First, he reported the will of a Benjamin Williams as:
"Benjamin Williams, of Stoake, near Guldeford, co. Surrey, schoolmaster, 2 July 1695, proved 22 September, 1698, by Nathaniel Williams his brother and executor. To cousin Samuel Hall, John, Samuel and Daniel Hall, now or late of Whetenhurst, co. Gloucester, twenty shillings apiece, within six months after decease of the testator. To cousins Anna Cliffold (Clifford?), of Bisley, and her two brothers, Richard and Nathaniel Tindall of Nibley, and to my cousin Joseph Tindall of Nibley, sometime of Trotton Hinton, ministers, ten shillings apiece, within six months, &c. To my cousins Samuel, Thomas and Benjamin Williams, of New England, and to my cousin Elizabeth Bird, of Dorchester in New England, and to the eldest child of my cousin Williams, of New England, deceased, in case there (are) any of them living, and also to the eldest child of my cousin Joseph Williams, deceased, in case he have left any living and who shall be living at the time of my decease, to every and each of them the said last mentioned persons the sum of twenty shillings, within one year, &c. To the poor of the parish of Eastington fifty shillings, and to the poor of the parish of Whetenhurst fifty shillings, any poor people of my father's kindred principally recommended. To my brother in law6 Nathaniel Williams, of Brandley, in co. Worcester, and his heirs forever, all those my freehold, tenements, lands tenements and hereditaments,&c. in Eastington and Frampton, and elsewhere in Gloucestershire, and all the residue; he to be executor.
"Note that the name Nathaniel is by mistake omitted, and also the eldest child of my cousin Hannah Parmater is to be comprehended. B. W. Lort, 208."
"[The children of Richard Williams, one of the first settlers of Taunton, N. E., were 1. John, 2. Samuel, 3. Joseph, 4. Nathaniel, 5. Thomas, 6. Benjamin, 7. Elizabeth, wife of John Bird, 8. Hannah, wife of John Parmenter. See Reg. v. 4144. All these children, except John, who may have died young, are named in the above will.
"Emery7, in his "Ministry of Taunton," i. 43-5, quotes a "manuscript of considerable antiquity," but evidently not written before 1718, which states that 'Richard Williams was descended from a family of that name in Glamorganshire, in Wales, and found a wife in Gloucestershire, England.' The same manuscript states that his wife was Frances Dighton, sister of Katherine, second wife of Gov. Thomas Dudley. Baylies, in his 'Historical Memoir of New Plymouth.' part i. p. 284, says there was a tradition that Williams was a relative of Oliver Cromwell. He also prints (i. 272) a letter from the Rev. Roger Williams, in which reference was made to 'my brother.' Baylies thinks this may be Richard Williams, of Taunton.
"John Bird, the husband of Elizabeth Williams, was a son of Thomas Bird of Dorchester. See Bird Genealogy, Reg. xxv. 21-30. --- Ed.]"8
Second, Waters reported the will of a Jane Williams as:
"Jane Williams, of Whetenhurst, co. Gloucester, spinster, 31 May 1650, proved 30 June, 1655. To brother Samuel Williams my Scottish print bible. To my brother Richard Williams and my sister Elizabeth Williams that are in New England, each of them twenty shillings apiece. To Benjamin Williams and Nathaniel Williams, the two sons of my brother Samuel Williams, ten pounds apiece when they reach the age of twenty-one years. To John Hall, the younger, my sister's eldest son, ten pounds and a standing bedstead that is in his father's parlour chamber, my brother-in-law John Hall's. To Samuel, Daniel and Susanna Hall, the other three children of my brother-in-law, John Hall, twenty pounds apiece at 21. Brother-in-law John Hall to be executor. Aylett, 292.
[It is possible that the Richard Williams, named above, as in New England, was Richard Williams of Taunton (ante, p. 236); but it is not probable. Six other persons by this name are recorded in Savage. -- Ed.]"9
"William Williams2 (John), of Synwell, Wotton-under-Edge, co. Gloucester, born place unknown, about 1555, buried in Wotton-under-Edge, 29 Sept. 1618. He married there, first, 15 Nov. 1585, Jane Shepheard, who died before 1603 [College of Arms states that she was buried in 1600]; he married secondly, in Cam, co. Gloucester, 4 Dec 1603, Jane Woodward, who was buried in Wotton-under-Edge, 2 Feb 1615.
