Elberta E. Olds was born on 1 Aug 1853.1 She was the daughter of James Hiram Olds and Nancy Ann Parker.1 Elberta E. Olds married Peter P. Gates on 1 Aug 1875 at Yamhill County, Oregon.1,2,3 Elberta E. Olds died on 28 May 1878 at age 241 and was buried at Masonic Cemetery, Lafayette Precinct, Yamhill County, Oregon.1
Her obituary states:
"Elbertie E. Gates, wife of Peter P. Gates, died at St. Joe on 28th day of May, 1878, at the early age of twenty-four summers, (her exact age being 25 on the 1st day of August.) She was born in Yamhill county, and was the oldest child of J. H. Olds and wife, who have lived among us for many years. She was married on the 1st day of August 1875, and has lived happily with her husband -- a faithful and devoted wife.
" 'And Bertie Gates is dead,' as it was whispered from friend to friend -- and she had many in our midst -- on the morning after death. A gloom fell like a shadow over the entire community -- a loss more sadly felt thatn can be expressed. The friends and relatives had hopes, shortly before her death, that she would soon be restored to health again, and when the sad word came the shock was too sudden. As for herself, she had not been so hopeful, although she bore her intense suffering with patience and forbearance. But on Sunday she became worse, and by Tuesday noon that final preparation which we all dread, was made, slowly and deliberately, by the dying woman. Her near relatives were called and she had a message for each one. In the last moments she was conscious and the longing good-byes were most affecting. To her sisier[sic] Della she gave her piano, knowing that her fingers would never again touch its silent keys. To her mother she gave her bedroom set -- an elegant marble top. To her father she requested her husband to present him with a suit of clothse[sic]; to her grandmother, a dress; to her little brother, Peter, twenty dollars; to her brother, V. D. [perhaps this should be E.M., the only sibling not mentioned], a shotgun; to her sister Katie, a locket; to her older brother, D. V., a present that her husband should select; and to him her watch and chain. He suggested that she give this to her mother. 'No, I want you to have my watch and chain.' These were purchased with her own money, earned by her when a girl, as a teacher, and, being dearest to her, she would have him, whom she tenderly loved, keep them in memory of her.
"She was buried on Thursday, at the Masonic cemetery, and at her request, they made her a grave by the side of her little babe that died just twenty days before her. She looked beautiful as she lay a corpse, dressed in white swiss, and white roses on her bosom. The coffin was a handsome rosewood casket, glass case and heavy finish. Two heavy wreaths of immortelles -- white roses and green leaves -- lay upon the casket during the funeral discourse. And thus we tell the brief story of her death. Long prior to that period she requested funeral services to be held when she should die, and during these solemn services there were but few whose hearts were not touched. The large church house could not seat the audience, and the funeral cortege consisted of forty carriages -- the largest funeral in this place for years.
"And Bertie is no more. A woman, whose love for her husband is best evidenced by what she told her mother just prior to her death. "Ma, I want to live to be with him." This was her prayer for life. And why should she not? A pleasant and happy home to be so suddenly and so soon laid in ruins. Ah, we can never tell what we lose until the time comes when our loved ones shall be taken from us.
"A woman whose life had been spent among us, whose sweet girlhood made us all her friends. In her family relations she was equally strong in the love of her associates. The loving wife and daughter is called away; and her home is desolate, for she was its life, its sun. But she had gone. Like a sweet lily she has perished. Her grave on the hillside will soon be green, and her pale hands, so dumbly crossed on her bosom, will soon loosen their hold, in dust, but Bertie's name and memory shall be green in our memories forever. Gone, but
"To the husband and relatives, it is a loss that time can not restore. And dear friends, in our hearts we extend our sympathy. The flowers of her bridal wreath, today, are crushed and wasted, and her sweet life, like an opening bud, has opened and closed forever. But
"'There let her rest, there let her sleep the sleep that knows no waking; and there will we, many and many a day, turn our sad faces, a little while from the hurry and bustle of the busy world, to remember her
Her obituary states:
"Elbertie E. Gates
'Day after day we think what she is doing
In those bright realms of air;
Year after year, her tender steps pursuing,
Behold her grown more fair.'
We will not be patient and assuage the feeling
We may not wholly stay,
By silence sanctifying, not concealing
The grief that must have way.

Edward Wallace reports meeting up with an Eli Olds in Oregon in 1852. The Wallace brothers had travelled across the plains with the Olds party, but upon reacing Fort Boise on the Snake River these single men decided to dispose of most of their gear and move on ahead. "We traveled alone until we reached Grand Ronde where we found Greve Terry, George and Eli Olds, who had loaded some horses with provisions in the Willamette valley and were going to meet friends that were on the road to Williamette valley. George Olds and Terry had crossed the plains together in the year before. When we got to Grand Ronde we found George Olds sick with mountain fever and unable to leave his bed and and waiting for the friends to come. We informed them of the condition of the friends we had left a few days before. There were other people there had friends on the road whom they had come to meet." [This was "Little George", i. e. George Washington Olds who had come to Oregon with Martin Olds in 1851.]6
"In the fall of 1852 Eli Olds, together with his cousin, 'Little' George Olds, and an acquaintance Grove Terry, proceeded to the Grande Ronde Valley in Eastern Oregon, traveling on horseback from Lafayette and taking with them pack-horses loaded with provisions for teh Olds Emigrant Party which was then enroute from Michigan to Oregon. They arrived in the Grande Ronde considerably in advance of the Olds Party and while awaiting their arrival George Olds was taken ill. His condition became so serious that Eli left him in the care of Grove Terry and hurried on to meet the Olds Party in the Powder River Valley and secure the services of Dr. Kellogg, who was a member of that Party. Eli returned quickly with Dr. Kellogg to the place where Grove Terry and George Olds were camped. Under Dr. Kellogg's care George recovered from his illness in the course of a few days.
"In the obituary notice published at the time of Eli Olds' death, reference is made to a period of residence at La Grande, Orteon, when he was a young man. How long he remained there is not known but the same notice goes on to say that in 1872 he permanently located in Tillmook Couty, Oregon.
"In the year 1858 Eli Olds married Minerva Hess, who also came to Oregonj in 1844. They had ten children, seven of whom were living at the time of Eli's death. The abitrary notice of 1917 gave the names of his children who were then living: Henry Olds, farmer, residing five miles east of Tillamook, Oregon; Alice Olds Adkins, residing at Gales Creek, Oregon; Lawrence Olds, residing at Tillamook, Oregon; Lester Olds, living at Portland, Oregon; Ada Olds Bohner, living at Seaside, Oregon; Verner Olds, living in New York; and Herman Olds, residing in Yamhill County, Oregon.
Of the three children who were not living at the time of Eli Olds' death, one was named Ida; and another was named Reed. Name of the other child is not known. It is reported that Mrs. Stella Spence a daughter of Alice Olds Adkins, and a granddaughter of Eli Olds, presently (1952) resides at McMinnville, Oregon.
