Aaron Knight Olds was born on 11 May 1810 at Pompey, New York.1,2 He was the son of Timothy Olds.1 Aaron Knight Olds married (1) Annette Barney in 1833.3,4 Aaron Knight Olds married (2) Martha Jane Garrison on 21 Dec 1865 at Yamhill County, Oregon.1,5 Aaron Knight Olds died on 17 Jul 1896 at Yamhill County, Oregon, at age 86.1 He was buried at Masonic Cemetery, McMinnville, Yamhill County, Oregon.6
Aaron Knight Olds appeared on the census of 13 Sep 1850 at Batavia, Branch County, Michigan, as follows:
     Aaron Olds, 38, forgeman, b. N. Y.
     Annetta " , 31, b. N. Y.
     Virginia " , 16, b. Ohio
     Charity " , 13, b. Ohio

     Catherin Jacques, 25, b. Va.
     Sally Needham, 26, b. N. Y.
     Charity Barney, 72, b. Conn.7
Aaron Olds was the youngest of the four brothers whose descendants were traced by Gowen. "He was born at Pompey, New York, about 1812 or 1813. While he was still an infant his parents moved from Pompey, N. Y., to Huron County, Ohio. They died there at about the same time, when he was only four or five years of age. With whom he lived after their death is not known but quite likely it was with one of his older brothers or sisters, several of whom were by that time married. His brother, Martin Olds, moved from Ohio to Branch County, Michigan, in 1834, and about five years later Aaron moved to Michigan also and located on a farm near his brother's place.
"About 1834 Aaron Olds married Annette Barney. In 1852 he and his wife and their five children joined the Olds Emigrant Party and came out to Oregon. His daughter, Virginia Olds, relates that he purchased a farm of 160 acres about twelve miles from Layfayette, paying $1.00 per acre for it. Apparently he disposed of this place at some later date for in more recent years he lived on a farm two or three miles south of McMinnville. He was living there at the time of his death, exact date of which is not known to the writer.
"Aaron Olds' first wife, Annette Barney Olds, died soon after they reached Oregon and Aaron later married Martha Ford. [Here are named Virginia Merdula Olds, Charity America Olds, Laura Caroline Olds, Theresa Olds, Elenette Olds, Edward Olds, and Edgar Olds as the seven children of the first marriage.] Aaron Olds had two children by is second wife: Knight Olds; and Nettie Olds; ".8
Edward Wallace also reported that Aaron Olds and his wife had a child born shortly after the Olds party left Tipton, Iowa (in mid-May 1852) but this child died after arriving in Portland in November. "Aaron Olds buried one of his children here that had died on the road that day while traveling." [This was at Grand Ronde, Oregon, perhaps in September or October, 1852.]9
Aaron K. Olds of Yamhill County was born in 1813 in New York, arrived in Oregon on 10 Nov 1852 and settled his claim on 8 or 20 Mar 1854. Elijah J. Wright, Fielding Hibler, Geo. W. Olds and Milton Polk signed affidavits.10
Aaron Knight Olds appeared on the census of 16 Jul 1860 at McMinnville Precinct, Yamhill County, Oregon, as follows:
     A. R. Olds, 46, farmer, b. New York
     Virginia , 24, b. Ohio
     Charity , 22, b. Ohio
     Laura , 20, b. Michigan
     Elenette , 10, b. Michigan.11
Aaron Knight Olds appeared on the census of 24 Jun 1870 at McMinnville Precinct, Yamhill County, Oregon, as follows:
     Olds, Aaron, 55, farmer, b. N. Y.
      , Martha, 33, keeping house, b. Indiana
      , Virginia, 34, school teacher, b. Ohio
      , Charity, 31, school teacher, b. Ohio
Ford, Mary, 16, at school, b. Oregon
      , Cyrena, 11, at school, b. Oregon
      , Ephraim, 9, at school, b. Oregon
      , Eveline, 8, at school, b. Oregon
Bumefield, Wiley, 20, farm laborer, b. Iowa
Booth, Harrison, 20, farm laborer, b. Iowa, father of foreign birth.12 He left a will on 12 Mar 1896. Its contents were reported by the Oregonian:
"McMinnville, Oct. 23. -- The will of Dr. A. K. Olds has been admitted to probate. Mr. Bates [sic] was a man of decided convictions, and left a will peculiar to himself. All of his estate is bequeathed to his widow, Martha J. Olds, in trust for their children, A. K., jr., and Nettia A. Olds. One-third of all rents, incomes and revenues from the property is to go to the widow, and also all personal property, except stocks and shares in McMinnville, Grange hall, which are to be willed to Annetta to advance the cause of secularism. Knight Olds, on attaining the age of 40 years, is to become the owner of 140 acres of land, part of the Ephraim Ford donation claim, except five acres of timber, which is to go to Annetta. Under the age of 40, the devisce[sic] is entitled to one-third of the rents and profits, but cannot sell or mortgage. Should he die under this age, without issue, the shares go to his widow while she remains such. The other third of the profits goes to the daughter. The 100 acres known as the Griffith & Pickering farm, is willed to the daughter, under the same conditions as the tract to the son. In case of death of both children without immediate heirs, the land is to be divided into fourths for other heirs and children of deceased heirs. One dollar is willed to each heir. In case of suit to cancel, annul or defeat the will, the heir so suing shall forfeit his request and it shall be divided equally among the other heirs. The will beas the date of March 12, 1896, and is witnessed by W. J. Garrisonj, Jonathan Bogue and C. B. Reynolds."13
     His obituary states:
"DR. AARON KNIGHT OLDS, of Yamhill Co., Oregon, a pioneer of progress, mechanical, physiological and mental, was a life member of the American Secular Union, member of the Oregon State Secular Union, member of and the most active worker fcr the McMinnville Secular Church and Sunday-school.

"Doctor Olds was born in the state of New York, May 11, 1810. When four years old, his parents removed to Huron Co., Ohio, where, after arriving at the age of sixteen, he served apprenticeship to the iron forging business. In connection with his brother, Martin Olds, he erected the first iron works in the state of Michigan, at Kukushe, Branch Co. Three years later he engaged with the Jackson Forge Co. on Lake Superior and bloomed the first bloom of iron in that vast iron region.
"He was married in 1838 to Annette Barney. They had seven children, three of whom survive him. In 1852 he came across the plains by wagon, arriving in Portland, Oregon, in November. Ten days alter his arrival his wife died. Soon after he settled in Yamhill Co. seven miles above McMinnville on the South Yamhill River. In 1860 he erected iron works on the Tualatin River at Moore's Mill, and made the first iron ever forged in Oregon.
"December 21, 1865, he married Mrs. Martha J. Ford, by whom he had two children—Aaron Knight Olds and Nettie A Olds, the former a promising young business farmer, partaking largely of his paternal qualities of honesty and fair-dealing; the latter the popular and talented Secular Lecturer and faithful exponent of the principles of Physiology and Free Thought inculcated by her father. He raised four step-children, with each of whom he shared the love and confidence due from an own father, and the sterling qualities of character, the honesty and affection of each proves the genuineness of his fatherly devotion. He often said of his children and stepchildren that he loved them all the same. In 1885 he purchased the David Logan place, two miles south of McMinnville, where he resided until the night of Friday, July 17, when he died, at the ripe old age of 80.

"The funeral services were held at the McMinnville Secular Church on Sunday, July 19, the commodious vestibule and gallery being crowded with friends and mourners at his loss, eager to pay the last tribute of respect to one they had known but to love and revere.

"At the special request of the deceased, his friend Mr. C. B. Reynolds, of Seattle, Sec. Wash. Secular Union, delivered the funeral oration, which was really a most eloquent and just panegyric. [The article continues with the remarks at the grave.]"1
Another obituary for Aaron is given by Virginia Treacy-Thomas:
"The following is Aaron K. Old's obituary that I found at the McMinnville public library (Yamhill co.,OR). I apopogize for not having the exact page written down. The local newspaper was a weekly publication.
"OBITUARY OF AARON KNIGHT OLDS
"Olds-In this city, on Friday, July 17, 1896, Dr. A.K. Olds, aged 86 years. Funeral held from the First Secular church, on Sunday, July 19.
"Aaron Knight Olds was born in the state of New York, May 11th, 1810; and when four years old, his parents removed to Huron county, Ohio, where he served apprenticeship to the iron forging business. In connection with his brother, Martin Olds, erected the first iron works in the state of Michigan, at Kukushe, Branch county; and three years later, engaged with the Jackson Forge Company, on Lake Superior, and bloomed the first bloom of iron in in that great iron egion.
"He was marrid in 1833 to Annette Barney; they had seven children, three of whom survive.
"In 1852 he came across the plains by wagon, arriving in Portland in November. Ten days after his arrival, his wife died. He soon after settled in Yamhill county, seven miles above McMinnville, on the South Yamhill river.
"In 1860, he erected iron works at Moore's mill, on the Tualatin river, and made the first iron ever forged in Oregon.
"December 21, 1865, he married Mrs. Martha J. Ford, by whom he had two children, Aaron K. Olds, and Miss Nettie A. Olds, the talented secular lecturer. In 1885, he purchased the David Logan place, two miles south of McMinnville, where he resided until his death.
"Dr. Olds was the most kindly, gentle and genial nature; his readiness at any self-sacrifice to minister to the sick and suffering, never making charges for his services, endeared him to man. In living and in dying he was a plain, simple-hearted, honest man--a man of the people; none ever doubted his word, for the most marked characteristic of the man was his perfect sincerity. All his lifelong he was honored as a strictly honest man, and known to be a devotee alike of personal and mental liberty."14

Olds married (2) Alma M. Ragsdale on 10 Aug 1911 at Monroe County, Michigan.4 Aaron R. Olds died on 24 Jun 1929 at Ohio State Soldiers' Home, Perkins Township, Erie County, Ohio.5
There is some doubt about Aaron's name and therefore, possibly, his identity. He is given as Aaron J. in the birth record of his son Ora and as James in Ora's marriage record to Emmaas well as in Ora's death record. Census records show him as Aaron R. Perhaps James was a middle name and he might have had more than one.
Aaron R. Olds appeared on the census of 19 Jul 1860 at Keeler Township, Van Buren County, Michigan, as follows:
Aaron R. Olds, 10, b. Michigan, attended school within year
He is listed with the family Joshua M. Carter, 45, and Sarah M. Carter, 29, natives of New Jersey. I know of no connection to this family and this might not be the correct Aaron Olds. Aaron's father had died in 1856.6
Aaron R. Olds appeared on the census of Jun 1890 at 6th Ward, Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan, as follows:
     89/92 Olds, Aaron R., private, Co. B, 6th Michigan, Heavy Artillery, 1864-1865
He lived on Emerson Street in E. Saginaw, Michigan. He suffered from chronic diarrhea ???? difficulty caused by measles; lost hs discharge.7

Aaron Olds enlisted on 3 Feb 1864 at Morenci, Michigan as a Private in Co. D[sic], 6th Michigan "H-A" [Heavy Artillery?] and was discharged on 20 Aug 1865 at Jackson, Michigan.
