Julia Mathews was born on 20 Oct 1874 at Illinois.1 She was the daughter of Newell Mathews and Sarah Snell Olds. Julia Mathews died on 3 Dec 1951 at 1425 Engracia Avenue, Torrance, Los Angeles County, California, at age 77.2 She was buried on 6 Dec 1951 at Evergreen Cenetery, Los Angeles, California.3
"The Civil Service. City. The following eligible list for psychologist is announced. .... Julia Mathews, 74.50". This is the lowest of the seven scores reported. Since this clipping was among the Julia Mathews papers sent to me from her California home by Regina Case in Nov., 2008, I presume it applies to "our" Julia Mathews.4
Julia Mathews appeared on the census of 6 Jan 1920 at 1425 W 4th Street, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, as follows:
38/109 Chase, Amanda M., head, 53, widow, b. Illinois, father b. Vermont, mother b. Massachusetts, teacher in public school
Mathews, Julia, sister, 48, single, b. Illinois, father b. Vermont, mother b. Illinois, clinical psychologist.5
Julia Mathews is listed in the employment records of the Child Guidance Center (The Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic in 1973) from 15 Jan 1925 thru 30 June 1948. The final payroll record lists her as Chief Psychologist living at 340 Strand, Hermosa Beach. Apparently her reason for leaving was "Clinic Reorganization".6
Her obituary states:
"Dr. Julia Mathews
"Funeral services for Dr. Julia Mathews, 77, retired psychiatrist, will be conducted today at 11 a.m. in Pierce Bros. Little Church Around the Corner, with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. A native of Illinois, she came to Southern California in 1877 and lived at 340 The Strand, Hermosa Beach. She died Monday in the Torrance Memorial Hospital."7
In June, 1973, I called two of Julia's co-workers -- Mrs. Florence G. Stellern in Pasadena and Mrs. Esther Heath Simpson in Carmel, California. They both knew her as "Judy". They thought very well of her as a person and as a child psychologist. Mrs. Simpson later wrote:
""She was a most astute, understanding, and perceptive observer of the children she examined in her role as psychologist at both the Los Angeles and Pasadena Child Guidanc[e] Clinics. I knew her from 1926 until her death. Not only were her examinations most illuminating but always so interestingly readable that none of us wanted to miss those words of wisdom about the child in action, thinking and relating to her with such freedom, naturalness and spontaneity. We never could understand how she could get so much in such a short time, though never hurried, or routinely written in stock phraseology as so many of the younger, more pretentious psychologists wrote reports which told so much less that was valuable to school and parents. We all loved Judy, as we called her and deeply appreciated her friendship. Her Christmas messages were always so personally helpful, somehow hitting the note of encouragement or direction that one read over and over so as not to miss the precious essence."8
Mrs. Stellern wrote:
"I remember Judy talking about her brother Bryant and about Ellen but I never saw either of them. Amanda lived here in Highland Park and then during her later years in a rest home in Glendale. I had many visits with her as I often drove Judy to where she (Amanda) was staying. Judy made two visits a week to see her -- most of them by public conveyance.
"As I told you on the phone Owen Case of Hermosa Beach knew Judy long before I did. He or his children ought to be able to be give you background information. ...
"Judy was an amazing person with an unusual ability to get close to people. She always looked as if a breath of wind would blow her over but she was tough. I know because she lived with me for many years when my boys were growing up, She told me that as a child she was considered too 'sickly' to go to school but she had a tutor and later earned a degree from Stanford. Afterwards she went to Europe for three years and in Switzerland had a long psychoanalysis -- Jung."9
It was through these ladies that I learned of Owen Chase and later obtained many of Julia's family records and pictures from the Chase family.

"INQUEST HELD OVER MATHEWS
Pioneer Merchant, Who Died Suddenly in Hotel, Succumbed to Heart Trouble, Which He Had for Years.
"'Take me home' were the last words uttered by Newell Mathews, president of the Newell Mathews company, who died suddenly in the Yosemite hotel, 115 1/2 South Broadway, about 8 o'clock last night.
"Dr. C. C. Stivers, who was called in to attend the dying man, said that heart disease from which Mr. Mathews had been a sufferer for several years, was the cause of his death. An inquest was held by the coroner at the undertaking rooms of Pierce Bros. late this afternoon.
"Leaving his place of business last evening Mr. Mathews started for the Hammam baths on Broadway. Becoming faint he took a room in the Yosemite and sent for Mrs. Helen Smith, a nurse in the employ of an electric bath and massage establishment on West First street.
"She responded immediately, but Mr. Mathews sank so rapidly that his son, Bryant Mathews, and Dr. Stivers were summoned. He passed away a few minutes after the doctor arrived and before his son reached his bedside. Just a few minutes before that Mr. Mathews summoned the hotel proprietor and asked to be sent home. Again just before he expired he feebly repeated his appeal.
"Mr. Newell was one of the pioneer business men of the city and had amassed a comfortable fortune in the implement and machinery business in which he was engaged up to the time of his death.
"Thirty years ago he came here from Peoria, Ills., where he served as superintendent of schools.
"He served in the city council from the First ward several years ago. He was a member of the Union League club, Chamber of Commerce, the Merchants and Manufacturers' association, the Credit Men's association and the Implement Dealers' association, being the president of the last named organization at the time of his death.
"All of these will be represented by committees at the funeral services which will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Church of the Unity, Rev. Burt Estes Howard, the pastor, officiating. The body will be entombed in Evergreen cemetery."13
His funeral sermon given on Sunday, 3 Feb. 1907, by the Reverend Burt Estes Howard, at the Church of the Unity in Los Angeles, emphasized the strength of his faith and his support of his church with "his time and his services and his money". "He was a Unitarian through and through."14
Newell Mathews died without a will and his estate was filed for probate on 12 March 1907. His heirs were Sarah S., widow, Bryant, 26, son, Amanda, Julia, over 21, daughter, and Ellen, over 21, daughter. Bryant, Amanda, Julia and Ellen Mathews each got 1/6 of the estate with the remainder to the estate of Sarah S. Mathews. Also, each of the children got 1/4 interest in Lot 18 at Evergreen Cemetery.15
