I have no proof for a first name of the Hawkins who was the father of Samuel Hawkins, but there are several tantalizing trails to pursue. Each shows a Thomas Hawkins who was the father of a Samuel Hawkins.
First, a Hawkins family in Maryland shares many of the same names found in North Carolina. Robert W. Barnes in his Baltimore County Families1 starts one family with a Robert Hawkins who died in Baltimore County in 1761. Thomas Hawkins, son of this Robert, was born 25 Nov 1712. He married Elizabeth FARMER on 24 Jan 1731. Their children were: Sarah Hawkins, b. 10 Jan. 1732; Gregory Farmer Hawkins, b. 11 Jan 1734; Mary Hawkins, b. 14 Jan. 1736; Thomas Hawkins, b. 27 Jan. 1740, d.15 Feb. 1746; Robert Hawkins, b.16 Feb. 1742; Samuel Hawkins, b. 1 June 1745; Thomas Hawkins, b. 3 May 1747; Martha Hawkins, b. 29 Jan. 1748. Barnes makes reference to the Registers of St. George's Protestant Episcopal Church.
Bill and Martha Reamy have published these Registers. They show the marriage of Robert Hawkins to Ann Treble (Preble?) on 15 Nov 1709 (p. 17), Thomas Hawkins to Elizabeth Farmer 24 Jan. 1731(p. 38) and, among their children, the birth of Samuel Hawkins b. 1 June 1745 2. On a research trip to the Maryland State Archives in April 2005, I worked a while on this Hawkins family in Harford County, hoping to find a link to North Carolina. I made some notes from Heirs and Legatees of Harford County, Maryland, 1774 - 18023. In the 1783 estate of a John Hawkins there was no distribution in the file but Sam Hawkins was named as next of kin. (p. 18) In the 1792 estate of Thomas Hawkins, there was no distribution in file. (p. 38) In the 1783 estate of Zachariah (Zacharias) Spencer, there was no distribution in the file. (p. 17)
In Peden's Revolutionary Patriots of Harford County, Maryland, 1775 - 17834 there are Hawkins entries for Gregory, Jeremiah, John, Richard, Robert and Samuel. Samuel Hawkins was a Private, Capt. Patrick's Co. No. 17, April 1, 1776, Signer, Association of Freemen, 1776, in Deer Creek Lower (Hundred?). (p. 108?)
Zachariah Spencer was also a Signer from Deer Creek Lower (Hundred?). (p. 211) I also found two marriages for this name --- Zachariah Spencer m. Christian Cobb 2 Feb. 1728 and Zachariah Spencer m. Ann Pogue 29 Sept 1755.5 Also, Samuel Hawkins m. Hannah Standiford, 4 Feb. 1785 and Samuel Hawkins m. Eleanor Laidlet, 5 Nov. 1782.6
Peden's Marylanders to Carolina has two Hawkins entries:
1. Ephraim Hawkins, b. 8 July 1761, Balt. Co., MD, moved to Orange Co., NC. Lived in Rowan Co. when he enlisted in RW, 1783-1784. Marr. Ann Farmer 1 May 1788 in Caswell County, N. C., d. 3 Nov. 1836; widow d. 31 July 1856. Pension W3987.
2. Joseph Hawkins, b. 7 June 1765, near Baltimore. Lived with his father (unnamed) in Burke Co. at the time he enlisted, married there, moved to Jackson Co., TN. Pension S4322.7
In a card index at the Maryland State Archives, I found a Thomas Hawkins paying tax on "Batchelor's Good Luck" in Deer Creek, Balt. Co. from 1754-1769 except for 1764 and 1767.
In the microfilm index to Harford County land records, I found only one record of Samuel Hawkins. On 18 May 1792 he sold land on the north side of Deer Creek to William Morgan, both of Harford Co. His wife, Hannah Hawkins, agreed to the sale. In 1791, Thomas Hawkins of Lancaster Co., PA, sold land in Harford Co. to Nicholas and Charles Hawkins.
The full text of the will of Joseph Hawkins of Baltimore County, dated 7 Ded 1725 and proved 12 Jan 1725, is available on line. He mentions his wife but does not name her. He lists four children John, Augustine, Jemima and Elizabeth as well as daughters Ruth Murray and Sarah Murray and son-in-law Josephus Murray. Sons John and Augustine, who were not yet eighteen years of age, inherited the land called Hawkins Desire. I mention this because the name Augustine Hawkins appears later in Burke County, North Carolina.8 The will of John Hawkins of Harford County, dated 18 Aug 1783 and proved 23 Oct 1783, names his son Samuel who got the home plantation, among other things.9
Second (and possibly connected with the same family), in 1965 I had some correspondence with Corinne Putnam Mehringer of Chicago, IL, who was a native of Greenville, SC. She sent lots of sheets of abstracted notes on Hawkins and related families. The most interesting to me was on Hawkins of old Augusta County, Virginia. from which Frederick County was created in 1737. She said that "a Thomas Hawkins b. 1689 -- was of Maryland near Baltimore. Moved into Frederick Co. Va by 1742 (maybe before). He was on rented land there in 1747 (tax record) 1749 is his inventory. He had a number of sons -- we know of Jos. Hawkins (1719 - 1770) left a will -- He m. Sara Edwards -- John Sevier wrote this up.

Saml (1743 - 1828) went to Western N C
dau Sarah (Hawkins Sevier (not named in will) -- wife of John Sevier.
daus Mary and Eliz. and supposed to have others."
Well, when I saw that Samuel I wrote her right back saying "I am very interested in the data you sent of Samuel, son of Joseph and Sarah (Edwards) Hawkins. The dates correspond exactly with those I have for "my" Samuel --- then I realized that you may have gotten them from me. Did either of the dates 1743 or 1828 for Samuel Hawkins come from another source? If so, where?" Then I added a summary of what I knew then of the family, including "Possibly the family did come from Va. -- in the 1870 Burke Co. mortality schedule is a John Hawkins, age 87, b. Va." I never got a response to my question.
Corinne also sent a RW Pension record for a Joseph Hawkins, S4322. Pensioned in Jackson Co., TN, issued 4/9/1834 retroactive to 3/4/1831. He was born in Md 7 miles from Baltimore, 6/7/1765. Was living in his father's home when war came on, returned to his father's home and lived there until he married then lived to himself in Burke Co., NC, until 1806 then he moved to Jackson Co. TN where has lived ever since (was still there in 1840 census). In 1790 census of Burke Co. lived near Austin Hawkins and Wm. Hawkins.
Third, there is a connection of one Samuel Hawkins with a Thomas Hawkins of Lincoln County, North Carolina, as discussed in the notes of Francine Bagwell.
"It is thought that Samuel and his family were in Lincoln County, North Carolina before the 1790s. The 1790 Lincoln census, pg 120, lists a Samuel Hawkins with one male over 16 (head of household), 5 males under 16, and 7 females. Other families shown on the census close to Samuel were Julius Holland, Peter Best, Rhodes, Hoyle, Wm. King, Zach Spencer and Isaac Holland. Other Hawkins listed on the 1790 Lincoln County census were: pg. 124, Matt Hawkins 1 m over 16, 2 m under 16 and 1 female; Jas. Hawkins 1 m over 16, and 2 females; on page 129, Jos. Hawkins 1 m over 16, 1 m under 16, and 2 females. There is marriage record in Lincoln County for James Hawkins and Rachel Little on April 6, 1789.
"There are two female Hawkins listed on Lincoln Co. marriages in the 1790s that Samuel Hawkins was the bondsman for. One of these is Ruth Hawkins, who married Daniel Holland on March 17, 1798. Daniel Holland is later shown as one of Samuel's heirs. The other marriage is for Sally Hawkins and John Hammontree. The marriage bond is not dated, but it is thought that they married in the 1795 -1798 time frame. They moved from North Carolina to Blount County, Tennessee in the early 1800s.
"There is also a Lincoln County marriage record for Elizabeth Hawkins and William King for February 11, 1799. The bondsman for this marriage was Thomas Wyet, with the witness as William G. Dicks. It is not known if Elizabeth was a daughter of Samuel or not, but a William King family was listed near them on the 1790 census. There were also William King's listed later in Burke County, but as this is a rather common name, it is not known if they were related.
"In the January Court of 1793 for Lincoln County, "Samuel Hawkins; son of Thomas Hawkins, Dec., came into Open Court and relinquished his Right of Administration on the said Thomas Hawkins, Dec. (deceased). Issue to Elisha Jones who qualified and gave bond and security, William Spencer and Andrew Taylor, 100 pounds." In the July court of 1794, there is a record of "Joseph Smith vs. Elisha Jones, Administrator of Thos. Hawkins - Verdict for defendant - Jurors: James Rutledge, Jas. Cunningham, Robert McCombs ..."
"There are other court records in Lincoln County during the 1790s reflecting Samuel Hawkins. He is listed as a juror in July 1794 along with James Cunningham. In January 1796 there is a record of "Saml. B. Hawkins vs. William Hansel - same jury charged - find for plaintiff." In April Court 1798, Lincoln: "Saml. B. Hawkins vs. Robt Goodwin - same jury charged and find for the defendant that a surrender was made and that Wm. Hansyl was to be donated to the benefit of an insolent [insolvent?] debtor."
"Samuel, born about 1743, does not appear on the 1800 census for Lincoln County or Burke County. There is a Samuel Hawkins listed on the Lincoln County census, but he is listed as age 16-25 with one female 16-25 and one female under 10. This may well be a son of Samuel (1743), as he appears with neighbors, Julius Holland, Hazlett, Hoyle and Elisha Jones. (I am not sure if this is the same Elisha Jones, who was the administrator for Thomas Hawkins, as there appears to be an Elisha Jones, Sr and Elisha Jones, Jr.) I assume this Samuel Hawkins married Polly Weathers during the 1790s as the 1800 census lists one child under 10. The marriage bond was not dated, but the bondsman was Elisha Weathers, who appears as the bondsman on other marriages from 1798 to 1812. There is also a Lincoln Co. record for Isaac Hawkins as bondsman on December 16, 1807 for the marriage of George Weathers and Martha Smith. Isaac Hawkins is also thought to be a son of Samuel (1743) and lives in Burke County for a short period of time."10
The county court records for July 1785, mention twin children of a Thomas Hawkins:
Fourth, there may be a DNA link between the North Carolina and the Maryland Hawkins families.
Writing about descendants of James E. Hawkins (ca. 1800 - aft. 1870) of Lincoln & Mecklenburg Counties, Ken Hawkins says:
"Exact Y-DNA matches with proven descendants of Robert Hawkins, died 1761 in Baltimore County, Maryland, make it probable that our Hawkins descend from him. His daughter, Ann Hawkins Renshaw, and youngest son William Hawkins (1725 in MD -1764 in NC) emigrated to the piedmont of North Carolina about 1763. Our James W. Hawkins may be the son of William's son Ephraim Hawkins, (1761 in MD - 1836 in NC)."13
The Hawkins Worldwide DNA Project includes a tree of descendants of Robert Hawkins (died 1751, Harford County, Maryland) showing his sons Thomas (born 1712, married Elizabeth Farmer, had son Samuel, born 1 Jan 1745, died young); John; Robert; and William. This site shows that it was the father of Ken Hawkins who was tested and gives his lineage back to Ken's 3rd great grandfather, James W. Hawkins, whose probable father and grandfather were Samuel Hawkins (ca 1775 - after 1830) and Thomas Hawkins (ca 1740 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia - 1790 in Rutherford County, North Carolina). Ken's father matches 25/25, 25/25, 35/37 and 37/37 with others shown as descendants of Robert Hawkins, died 1761 in Harford County.
This seems to show that some of the Hawkins' in North Carolina descend from the Maryland family.14
It is disappointing that none of these trails has provided a firm connection to "our" Samuel Hawkins of Burke County. Recall that we have not definitely shown him to be in Burke County before 1800.
I found no Maryland connection to the Samuel Hawkins of Burke County, although the agreement of birth dates and the use of the same names (especially connections with Farmer and Zachariah Spencer) in the two families certainly draws attention to the possibility. The Samuel, son of Thomas, in Maryland is certainly not eliminated by an undocumented statement on the web that he "died young". Although I did not rule out a connection I think the balance was slightly negative.
If a Thomas Hawkins was in Virginia by 1742, he was probably not the one having children born in Harford County through the 1740s but a connection may be indicated by the fact that John Hawkins, possibly son of Samuel of Burke County, may have been born in Virginia.
The Samuel Hawkins and Thomas Hawkins of Lincoln County seem to have been too young to match "our" Samuel Hawkins. The Thomas of Lincoln County who had twins born in 1775 is probably not the Thomas of Harford County who had a son Samuel, born in 1745, but this possibility is not definitely disproven.
While a DNA linkage would certainly be encouraging, it would not prove parentage and, as far as I know, no male-line descendants of "our" Samuel Hawkins have taken the Y-DNA test.
His chn in his will
Joe
James (he stayed in Frederick Co., VA
RACHEL HAWKINS, b. January 1775.
"Ordered by Court that Rachel Hawkins, daughter of Thomas Hawkins a blind man be bound unto Thomas Espie, Esq, untill she arrive at age of eighteen years being now ten years old the first day of January last. He the said Thomas to give her in all things according to law."
WILLIAM HAWKINS, b. January 1775.
"Ordered by Court that William Hawkins son to Thomas Hawkins be bound to James Cunningham untill he arrives at the age of twenty one years he being now ten years old the first day of January last. Said James is to learn him the weaving trade and to give him all things according to law."11,12
