He was a graduate of North Buncombe High School, where he excelled in R.O.T.C. and was the drum major of the marching band, which received 1st place in a Winston-Salem competition. He later graduated from Mars Hill College with a B.S. degree in Psychology. Before his illness, he was a promising young actor, participating in Mars Hill College theatre productions as well as those of Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre. He was a member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he molded his deeply held belief in God, bringing joy to everyone who knew him.

"William Thomas married secondly, in Middleboro, 28 Feb. 1704/5, Sarah Barden and eight more children were born between 4 July 1706 and 11 May 1721 (May. Desc. Vol. 2,p. 202; Middleboro Vital Records).
