"Chauncey N. Olds moved in 1820 from Vermont to Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, and in 1830 to Circleville, Ohio; educated at Ohio University and graduated in 1836 from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, with the highest honors of his class; was Professor of Latin there until 1840, when he studied law with his brother, Joseph Olds, at Circleville, Ohio, and was admitted to the bar in 1842; practiced law there until 1856, when he moved to Columbus, Ohio. He served in the Ohio Legislature from 1848 to 1850, and was elected Attorney General of Ohio in 1865. It was said of him that he was undoubtedly the most accomplished orator and best belles-lettres scholar at the Franklin bar."2

"For the Newark Daily Advertiser.
"Chauncy A.[sic] Olds, of Ohio
"The events which took place last winter in the Ohio Legislature, have brought this gentleman prominently before the public. As intimated in the sketch of Mr. Galloway, he is a graduate of Miami University, and acquitted himself so well as to be elected Professor of the Latin language soon after taking his degree. He is connected with a family, the very name of which is now identified with the politics of that State. His uncle, Gamaliel Olds, was long the most popular and admired professor of Mathematics in Amherst College, and a preacher of extraordinary gifts. One of his brothers, Edson Olds, M. D., was elected Speaker of the the State Senate last winter, by the democrats, and since then has been sent to Congress. But the eldest brother, Mr. Joseph Olds, deserves a special mention, since his talents and energy first brought his own family into notice. [A segment here about Joseph Olds has been transferred to Joseph's file]
"This gentleman educated his younger brother Chauncy, and afforded him the means of becoming, as he now is, one of the most accomplished lawyers, and scholars at the Ohio bar. He has none of the majesty of appearance, which causes a stranger to turn and take the second look when he meets Webster or Ewing. A first look would seem to impress you with the idea of his being better fitted to adorn a less rugged field than that he now occupies. In stature qute diminutive, and lame withal, he looks boyish, and gives no sign of his really splendid talents. It is doubtful, if fact, whether a stranger, judging from his personal appearance, would not prefer every lawyer in Circleville to manage a difficult case.
"After completing his studies with his brother, he became his partner; and soon had a case which tested him thoroughly. In some brawl on the Ohio Canal at Circleville, a man was killed under circumstance which brought the intensest odium of the public on the one who stood indicted for murder. The two brothers were employed by the prisoner to defend his case, and the entire management of it committed to the younger partner. He forthwith instituted a thorough examination of the localities, and the attending circumstances, and became convinced that the act was in law justifiable homicide. A man of the most delicate sense of honor and christian principle, our own Frelinghuysen cannot be more conscientious than Mr. Olds in all his professional labors.
"The prosecuting attorney, finding that an energetic defence would be made, employed Thomas Ewing to aid him in the prosecution. Several days were occupied in the most searching examination of witnesses, and with such consummate skill did the young advocate conduct his examination, as to elicit the proof of the position he had himself previously reached. In ths protracted and entangled examination, he did not make one written note, and yet in summing up the case, so tenacious and well trained was his memory, that he was able to detail the evidence of every witness with so much accuracy, that his opponents had no occasion to correct a single misstatement. When the jury went out, Mr. Ewing with characteristic magnamity took Mr. Joseph Olds by the hands, and said "I would advise you to take care of your laurels, for this young brother of yours is lkely to share them with you, if not overtop you."
"Coming from such a source, it was a very fine compliment, and it was proved to be deserved by the verdict of "not guilty" rendered in a very short time.
"As a lawyer, Mr. Olds has three qualifications which will make him eminent. Patient and thorough as a German philologist, he always understands his cause. With a memory, as well disciplined and tenaciious as Dr. Cox's, a fact or principle once learned, is always learned; and at the same time, it gives him singular advantages at the bar. To crown his qualifications, he is one of the most graceful and forcible speakers in the state. His growing reputation and practice show the correctness of this judgment.
"In him we have a case of the influences brought to bear on the popular mind when any great political question is to be agitated. Such men dare not, at their peril, stay at home. Their very opponents demand their presence to wake uo the people by the incantations of the stump. Mr. Olds has stood by the side of Ewing and Corwin repeatedly since 1840, and has done no mean share in those tremendous agitations. In all the finish of a scholarly speaker, he has no superior. Accustomed to "lamp smoke," he can and does do honor to the classics he has studied so diligently, and yet his great modesty will always save him from becoming a pedant. There is not a particle of parade in his learning. He shows the inimitable quietness with which a modest scholar should present his thoughts to others. In this respect he is much like the newly elected Professor of Church History at Princeton, a comparison of no doubtful meaning.
"But Mr. Olds has avoided one rock on which some of our political scholars have made shipwreck. They are so learned, and so precise, and they think in such an incomprehensible way, that they might as well whistle at the north wind as speak to the people. With all their learning, the people wonder and stare and gape, and long for some far inferior man, who has the gift of thinking as they think, and speaking so that they can understand him. In this respect, Mr. Olds had a fine model in his elder brother, and well has he observed it. The most abstruse and difficult questions in politics, and the doctrines of different parties, he will expound with such perfect simplicity that common people will give him their undivided attention for hours. A delightful vein of drollery runs through his speeches, and at times he convulses his audience with some amusing and apt illustration. In 1844 he was addressing, with Mr. Corwin, a great mass meeting, and in order to show that the democrats, with John Tyler at their head, were riding a horse which was running away, and from which they would gladly alight if they could, Mr. Olds said, it reminded him of two Irishmen who went into a field one night to steal a couple of horses. There were many out of which to choose, and one of them caught a very wild one. As soon as he mounted, the horse started, and all the rest after him, snorting and blowing like horses on a prairie. The Long Island races never had such an amusing sight as our Irish hero surrounded by emulous horses. His companion was thoroughly frightened to see "Jamie" carried round and round the lot at that rate, and as the racers approached him, he shouted at the top of his voice, "Jamie, why don't you get off?" Jamie, with one look most dolorous as he swept by, screamed back in reply, "And how can I get off when I can hardly hould on?" Mr Corwin himself was convulsed by the anecdote, so well told was it, and the people roared like many waters.
"During the last winter, whilst the disorganization of the Legislature continued, Mr. Olds, a leader among the Whigs, made one of the most charming and witty speeches ever delivered in that old State House. He frequently addresses literary societies, and several of these orations have been published. He is in a fair way to higher preferments, having already been elected to the State Senate, and not many years will pass before his voice will be heard in Congress. As a Christian he is no bigot, as a lawyer he is no bungler, and as a statesman he is no charlatan; and good men have reason to rejoice when such mingle with their honesty and wisdom in the public councils of a great nation.

Cheney Olds was born on 31 Mar 1793 at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts.2,3 He was the son of Ezekiel Olds and Lydia Stevens.1 Cheney Olds married Amma Walker on 11 Sep 1817 at Sturbridge, Massachusetts.4,5 Cheney Olds died on 7 Dec 1874 at Albany, Illinois, at age 81.4 He was buried at Oakridge, Albany, Whiteside County, Illinois.6
Cheney Olds is listed as a private in Capt. L. Abbot's Company, Lt. Col. Salem Town's Regiment from Sept. 8 to Oct. 30, 1814, raised at Brookfield and vicinity with service at Boston.7
"[H]e was a soldier of the War of 1812; lived in Sturbridge, Mass; in 1827 moved to Cayuga Co., N. Y; after two years moved to Cattaraugus Co., N. Y., and in 1838 migrated to Albany, Ill."4
Cheney Olds appeared on the census of 1840 at Whiteside County, Illinois, as follows:
1 male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 2 males 20-30, 1 female under 5, 1 female 15 -20, 1 female 40-50
This fits very well with his known family except that the youngest daughter, Mary, is supposed to have been dead.8
Cheney Olds appeared on the census of 9 Nov 1850 at District 37, Whiteside County, Illinois, as follows:
"Cheney Olds was 12 years of age when his father removed to New Jersey with his family, and he there attained to man's estate. His employer was drafted as a soldier in the War of 1812, and he took his place as a substitute, serving until the close of the contest. He went to the county where he was born, after obtaining his discharge, and was there married, locating on the homestead estate of the family of his wife. He lived in Sturbridge until 1828, when he set out with his family for the State of New York, removing by the aid of teams to Albany, and thence on the Erie Canal to Weedsport, in Cayuga County. After a residence there of two years' duration he went to Cattaraugus County, and bought 140 acres of land included within the Holland Purchase. The heavy timber of that section has become traditional, and it was necessary to cut the trees and burn them on the ground, the farmers cultivating the ground between the stumps. There the family remained until 1838, and Mr. Olds cleared 100 acres of land. In the spring of that year, having sold the farm, he removed his family to Olean, on the Allegheny River. They arrived there about the middle of March, intending to go down the river by the first steamer that moved after the ice should go out, but failed to do so. Their disappointment was fully alleviated by the intelligence of the explosion of the steam boiler of the "Mozelle," causing 160 deaths! Mr. Olds and his sons engaged in the common business of cutting pine logs until the last day of April, when the family, consisting of the parents and nine children, took passage on one of the rafts on which the father and sons were employed, and went to Cincinnati, where they arrived May 16. They went thence on the steamer "Knickerbocker" to Albany, which they reached May 26, at 2 o'clock in the morning.
"Mr. Olds made a claim three and a half miles east of Albany, where he broke a few acres. It was State land, and he afterwards abandoned his title. He readily obtained plenty of work at boot and shoe making, which he had learned in his native State. He built a frame house in Albany on the corner of Church and Vine streets, where he resided until his death Dec. 7, 1874. Mrs. Olds, the mother, died Jan. 18, 1883.
"Their children were born in the following order: Warren, in Sturbridge, Mass; Chester, in Sturbridge, July 27, 1820 (died at Albany, March 3, 1852); Louis lives in Woodland, Yolo Co., Cal; Nancy is the wife of Peter Van Nest, of Garden Plain Township; Ezekiel and Walker live in Albany; Cheney resides in Woodland, Yolo Co., Cal; Asenath is the wife of John Faxon, and lives in Nebraska; Mary died in Albany in 1838, aged three years."10
