Albert J. Olds was born in Aug 1859 at California.1 He was the son of Daniel Olds and Sarah L. (?).1 Albert J. Olds married Sarah Elizabeth Thompson in 1898 at Sonora, California.2,3,4 Albert J. Olds died on 5 Jun 1931 at Reno, Washoe County, Nevada. This gives his calculated age as 71 years and 10 months.5,6 He was buried on 8 Jun 1931 at Mountain View Cemeter, Reno, Nevada.7
A. J. and Sarah met in Stent, California, near Sonora. She had gone there to make her living by cooking and sewing for the miners. "Albert J. Olds -- known as A. J. -- was a member of a quite distinguished California family. His grandfather had come to Marin County in 1854 and bought 8,000 acres of land at Olema "for $4,000 gold coin." A. J.'s father had been a member of the Constitutional Covention for California, but A. J. and his brother were both bitten by the gold bug, and both drifted from one strike to another until their health failed.Today we know the disease as silicosis, but then it was the lethal "Miner's Con" that filled graveyards or wrecked health in camps from Bisbee to Virginia City. A record of the birth of the Olds children is a record of the various mining discoveries of the period. Edson, the eldest, was born in Confidence, near Sonora, California. Jessie in Bisbee, Arizona; Alice in Virginia City, Nevada. By then A. J.'s health had deteriorated so that he could no longer work underground, so the last three children, Leslie, Albert, and Martha, were born in Reno. where the family settled in 1906 (the last one after the homestead was established)."8
"MARRIED. OLDS-HAYES--At Carson City, Nevada, Jan. 17, 1890, Albert Olds of Genoa, to Miss Phoebe Hayes of Carson."9

Alexander Olds was born on 8 Jan 1794 at Marlboro, Windham County, Vermont.1,2,3,4 He was the son of Thaddeus Olds and Helena Mather.1 Alexander Olds married (1) Lovicy Prouty on 7 Oct 1815 at Marlborough, Vermont.5,6,7,8 Alexander Olds married (2) Drusilla Jencks on 3 Jan 1853 at Springfield, Massachusetts.9 Alexander Olds died on 23 Jan 1870 at age 7610,11 and was buried at Universal Presbyterian Cemetery, Youngstown, Niagara County, New York.10
On 5 Sep 1815, at Marlborough, he took the Freeman's Oath , as required by the 1777 Constitution of Vermont.12
Alexander Olds and Lovicy Olds appeared on the census of 14 Aug 1850 at Porter, Niagara County, New York, as follows:
Alexander Olds, 56, b. Vt.
Lovicy P. " , 50, b. Vt.
Alfred " , 14, b. N. Y.
Helena " , 23, b. Vt.13
Alexander Olds and Drusilla Olds appeared on the census of 22 Jun 1860 at Porter, Niagara County, New York, as follows:
Alex Olds, 66, farmer, b. Vermont
Drucilla, 52, farmer, b. New Hampshire.14
Although I have not fully identified the principals in this Supreme Court Case in Niagara County, New York, it seems to be closely related to the family of Alexander Olds so I have placed this note with Alexander.
"SUPREME COURT. -- Niagara County. -- Maria A. Erwin, plaintiff, against Drusilla Olds, Lewis F. Olds and Hannnah Olds, his wife, Dewitt C. Olds and Abigail Olds his wife, Charlotte Olds, Norman A. Olds and Clarissa Olds his wife, Cynthia L. Wells and William Wells her husband, Helena Noble and Samuel P. Noble her husband, James Erwin, Horace Dawson, Carrie Belle Olds, Fanny Olds, Robert Dawson, Joseph B. Bastedo, Marion J. Olds, infant, Ira H. Olds, infant and Charlotte Olds, their guardian, defendants."
A court order of 15 Aug 1876 required a newspaper notification to anyone who had any claim on any of the owners of "All that tract or parcel of land, situate in the town of Porter, Niagara county, N. Y., being the sourh part of lot number thirty (30) in the 15th township and 9th range of the Holland Land Company's land, so called, containing about one hundred acres. Dated August 21st, 1876, CHAS. H. PIPER, Referee, Niagara Falls, N. Y."15
Here is an attempt at identifying the principals of this case.
Maria A. Erwin -- see James Erwin
Drusilla Olds, 2nd wife and widow of Alexander Olds (1794-1870]
Lewis F. Olds, son of Alexander Olds, married Hannah
Dewitt C. Olds, son of Alexander Olds, married Abigail Snell
Charlotte Olds, widow of Albert Manley Olds , son of Alexander Olds
Norman A. Olds. per FindAGrave he had wife Clarissa and was a son of Alexander Olds
Cynthia L. Wells and husband William Wells, thus identified as dau. of Alexander Olds
Helena Noble and husband Samuel P. Noble; dau. of Alexander Olds
James Erwin. Possibly James Erwin 1820 - 1897 bur. 1st Presby. Ch., Lewiston, NY. possibly 1875c of Niagara Co. James Erwin, 46, b. Niagara Co., married once, laborer in Penn., Maria Erwin, 33, wife, b. Vt., 4 children, married once, 3 children listed. Possibly 1880c James Erwin, 60, wife Maria, 49. According to the 1880c of Lewiston, Niagara County, New York, Maria Erwin was born in Vermont as were both of her parents. Perhaps Maria A. Erwin was Almira Maria Olds, daughter of Alexander. Find A Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com : accessed 06 August 2018), memorial page for James Erwin (1820–1897), Find A Grave Memorial no. 146220659, citing First Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lewiston, Niagara County, New York, USA ; Maintained by Mary Jane Haight-Eckert (contributor 46560908). The family is under Irving in the 1870c of Wisconsin.
Horace Dawson. See Robert Dawson. Also 1880c Niagara Co., NY, Horace Dawson, 20, single.
Carrie Belle Olds, dau. of Alfred S. Olds, son of Alexander Olds
Fanny Olds. Frances G. Pawley Olds, widow of Alfred S. Olds, son of Alexander Olds; widow's pension on Fold3.com not seen
Robert Dawson.
This entry may be the Dawson family of interest:
28/27 Robert Dawson, 28, b. Niagara Co., married once, farmer
Caroline J. Dawson, 23, wife, b. Niagara Co., mother of 1 child, married once
Horace Dawson, 5, son, b. Niagara Co.
Lucy S. Hall, 31, boarder, b. Orleans Co., mother of 3, married twice, now widowed
Corrielynn Hale, 7, boarder, b. Monroe Co.
Minnitte Hale, 3 6/12, boarder, b. Monroe Co. 16
However, this could not have been the missing Caroline Olds who was much older. This is apparently Caroline Jeffords, daughter of Horace D. Jeffords, 44, and Sarah J. Jeffords, 39, whose family is listed next on this census page. Caroline J., age 8 , appears with Horace D. Jeffords, age 24, in the 1850 census of Niagara County. There is no column for marital status and no wife listed. Possibly he had just lost his wife. Was she the missing Caroline Olds? --but apparently she was not the mother of Horace. Horace Dawson, born 28 Apr 1860 in New York, retired, of 213 Fona Street, died 14 June 1925, in Muskegon, Muskegon County, Michigan. His parents were listed as "unknown" and the informamt was Katherine F. Dawson, also of 213 Fona Street. He was buried at White Cloud. He, at age 60, resident of Muskegon, native of New York, son of Robert Dawson and Caroline Jeffords, had married Katherine F. Verwal, 55, resident of Muskegon and native of Illinois, daughter of Franklin Van Wiser and Agnes Rose, on 9 May 1925 in Muskegon. Horace had been married once before and Katherine had been married twice before. His new wife could not supply his parents' names.17
Joseph B. Bastedo -- the only one for which I still have no hint of a connection.
Marion J. Olds, infant. In 1876, Judson M. Olds was age 19 and Ira A. Olds was age 11. They were sons of Albert Manley Olds, deceased, son of Alexander, and their step-motner was Charlotte Olds.
Ira H. Olds, infant. See Marion J. Olds]
[Charlotte Olds, guardian of the last two]
Eight of the nine children of Alexander Olds are represented in this list. Perhaps Caroline was deceased without any heirs by 1876, although Joseph B. Bastedo and the Dawsons have still not been connected with Alexander Olds. Being named in this document is circumstantial evidence of a connection to Alexander Olds and sometimes the best evidence I have.

"Mr. and Mrs. Olds were married at the old Layton farm near Skiddy by Dr. Adams, early day Justice of the Peace at Skiddy."22

159/204 Olds, A. H., head, owner, 75, b. N. Y., came to Kansas from N. Y, retired R.R. Carrier for Junction City
, Sarah C., wife, 70, b. N. J., came from N. J.23
Alexander H. Olds prepared an autobiography in 1926. The typescript is 13 pages long and contains much detail of his life. Here are some extracts:
"in the month of November 1867 I left Auburn, N. Y. for Oswego, N. Y. in answer to an ad for painters. ... In March 1869 I started west, bought a ticket to Chicago. There I met an old man named Wilkerson. He was there to complete the purchase of about 350 acres of land that joined his home place. I went with him and worked for him and 3 grown sons for 7 months.
"I am rather ahead of time so must go back. My earliest recollection is when we were living at a small town called Port Byron, 7 miles north of Auborn[sic], N. Y. My father was keeping a store there. The New York and Erie Canal ran through the town. ... The next place I can remember living was a small town on the N.Y. Central R.R. by the name of Cayuga Bridge. There was a covered bridge about a mile long built on piles. It was about half caved in when we lived there.
"We got on a steam boat, the first one I had ever seen, and went to Ithaca and from there south to Owego in Tioga Co. Father had got hold of 50 acres, 5 miles from Owego, all covered with timber. He had a small house built when we got there. ... After 3 O[sic]r 4 years Father sold out and we went down to Orange Co., N. Y. My mother's people lived in Orange Co[.], Ulster Co. and Sullivan Co. At that time all boys were supposed to learn a trade or study for a profession, unless he was content to be a roustabout, so my father and an Uncle Alexander Olds, who was a cabinet maker, insisted on me learning a trade. So I elected to learn the painters trade. ... I had some time off and I spent most of it at my grandmother Seamans about 20 miles away. When I left Randel Bros., I went down to Goshen the county seat 7 miles away. My next move was to Auborn, N. Y. where my father was working in a large candy and toy store. Father got me a job in the finishing room of a large woolen mill. I have forgotten how long I had to serve to learn to be a boss finisher, but after being there 7 months I just quit. All the boys I had been running with were enlisting as substitutes and getting $800.00 bounty from the person that they went for, besides the state and county bounty. I thought I could do as well but I was just a little too young as well as undersized. Then all at once the bubble burst and the war was over. I had tried to enlist several times at Rochester and Syracuse. There was a concentration camp outside Auborn where all the recruits from central N. Y. were stationed till mustered into the service, then they were sent to Elmira, N.Y. to stay till sent to the army where needed. One D[sic]ay I got into the room where they were issuing uniforms, got one, put it on and marched out to the camp with several others. Slept, ate and drilled with the others. Thought I sure was it now, but after a few days they marched us downtown to be mustered in and in a very short time I was out of that uniform and on the street again. Then I quit trying. A good lot of those boys never got farther than the camp an Elmira. ...
"On the 4th day of November, 1869 I came to Junction City ...
"I herded cattle for 3 years, 1871-72-73. The first year I didn't have much of a herd until rather late, but the next two years I had all I could handle. In 1873 I had 9 acres of ground broke. I sowed 8 acres of fall wheat. That winter Bill Buckley and I went many times over to Laytons, 2 miles northwest of Skiddy. Then on the 31st of March, your mother and I got married. Bill Buckley was our witness. A Dr. Adams of Skiddy, who was a Justice of the Peace, performed the ceremony. My but how it did rain that day and the day before! The next day there was about 2 inches of snow on the ground. That was almost 52 years ago and we are here yet, and no desire to quit for quite some time.
[He tells of a great plague of grasshoppers in Kansas. They arrived one day and stayed from July through September. They consumed crops, tree bark, leaves, etc. and caused a great hardship that continued through the winter but when the new brood of grasshoppers hatched the next spring, they flew away.] "Then in December your brother Eddie was born and as we had no pony we were pretty well tied down, but we had some good neighbors and got along fine. Near spring a detail of soldiers from Ft. Riley came to Parkersville and gave out rations. One of my neighbors brought me a nice piece of dry salt pork, some flour, cornmeal, potatoes, salt and pepper all based on the size of the family. They had a list of every family and number in it. They gave mine to my nearest neighbor to the west. That was sure a neighbor worth having ..." After telling of prairie fires, droughts, lethal blizzards, and the various places he had lived and worked he tells of being laid off at Ft. Riley and taking the exam to be a rural mail carrier. He got the job, chose a route and begain in 1903. After serving 16 years and three months he was retired on 20 Aug [1920?] due to a new "age law" than went into effect the next day.24
His obituary states:
"A. H. Olds, for over sixty years a resident of this city and county, died Friday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Kathrine Thompson of Salina, where he and Mrs. Olds had gone to spend the winter.
"The remains were brought to this city and the funeral was held Tuesday from the Methodist church, in charge of Rev. C. L. Buckner, and burial was made in Highland cemetery.
"Mr. Olds lived in the early days on Skiddy ridge and many were the interesting stories he could tell of pioneer experiences, prairie fires, grasshoppers, etc.
"He was the first rural route carrier from the Junction City postoffice, carrying route one, up Lyons and Otto Creek, and was always on the job, good or bad weather, until retired under the old age ruling of the government and had the love and esteem of all his patrons.
"He was seventy-nine years of age, and was born at Burrowville, Hamilton County, New York.
"He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Frank Brownson of Lincoln, Nebr., his aged wife, and these children: Mrs. D. G. Upham, Mr. William Olds, Mr. Frank Olds, Mrs. Frank Spence, Mr. Charles H. Olds and Mrs. Katherine Thompson, beside many grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
"Three children preceded him in death. LeRoy Olds in infancy, Miss Hattie Olds in 1923, and Isaac Edward Olds in 1906." [Someone has changed by hand the dates in the last paragraph, 1923 to "1919 or 1920" and 1906 to 1907.] There is also a handwritten note on this obituary, saying "Died after midnight Dec. 2nd, 1927." Greg Olds adds that this note is in his Dad's handwriting.25
