     Mr Nelms was born and reared in Elbert County, Ga., a son of the late James A and Sarah Childs Nelms. He had been a resident of the Lyman-Duncan area and was a member of Lyman Methodist Church.
     Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Janie Childs Nelms; five daughters, Mrs J. G. Greer, Spartanburg Rt. 4; Mrs. John V. Langford and Mrs. H. B. Satterfield, both of Lyman; Mrs. J. C. Blackwell, Welford, Rt. 1, and Mrs J. W. Burnett. Atlanta. Ga; two sons, W. A., Greenville, and O D. Nelms, Spartanburg; one brother, J E. Nelms, Seneca; one sister, Mrs John Marquard, Calhoun Falls; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren

     William Newman married an unknown person. He was born at Northern Ireland. He died on 4 Aug 1802.
     He listed on chart by Gillie Fowler and Ann Carswell, 10 March 1987. He William Newman was a seargeant in the colonia militia in Fairfield District, SC, serving in Col Richard Richardson's Battalion in the Cherokee Expedition. (Bartholomew Austin was a private in the same battalion.) He then"served in the Revolutionary War in Capt. Moore's Independent Company and General Francis Marion's Brigade. On 7 December 1772, he was granted two hundred acres of land on the northside of Broad River and a branch of Little River known as Austin's Mill Creek. THis land was adjacent to the lands of William Austin, Drury Austin, and Bartholomew Austin. William Newman died 4 Aug. 1802." See "William Newman 424" by George A.      William Newman "The second generation William Newman married Mary Austin, the daughter of Bartholomew and Elizabeth Austin. His brother was named Austin. ... William and Austin lived in Union County [SC] for many years. On 22 July 1785 William purchased two hundred acres on the northside of the Tyger River at the Fork of Fair Forest Creek. A blacksmith, he was also a member of Padgett's Creek Baptist Church. In 1810, William and Austin Newman moved to North Carolina. William purchased from William Hannon on the Long Branch of Pacolet River. Austin's land was on Alston Creek. Two years later moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee. Austin and his wife drew a revolutionary war pension. Their children contributed to the establishment of Mossy Creek Academy [later part of Carson Newman College]."
