He William Newman was a seargeant in the colonia militia in Fairfield District, SC, serving in Col Richard Richardson's Battalion in the Cherokee Expedition. (Bartholomew Austin was a private in the same battalion.) He then"served in the Revolutionary War in Capt. Moore's Independent Company and General Francis Marion's Brigade. On 7 December 1772, he was granted two hundred acres of land on the northside of Broad River and a branch of Little River known as Austin's Mill Creek. THis land was adjacent to the lands of William Austin, Drury Austin, and Bartholomew Austin. William Newman died 4 Aug. 1802." See "William Newman 424" by George A.
