John Jenney married Sarah Carey on 1 Nov 1614 at Leiden, Holland.1 John Jenney died bt 28 Dec 1643 - 25 May 1644.2 His estate was inventoried on 25 May 1644 at Plymouth Colony.3
Matthew Hovius published an article in The Genealogist in which he summarizes an extensive review of his research into to the background of John Jenney of Plymouth plantation in America and Norwich, England. Jenney appears to have done well for himself both in Leyden, Holland, and in Massachusetts. He was granted a farm in Plymouth which was called Lakenham. Lakenham is also the name of a parish in Norwich, Norfolk county, England. When John married Sarah Carey in Leiden, Holland, he described himself as a single man from Norwich. He first appears in Leyden records in 1609 and he arrived in Plymouth in 1623 on the Little James.
Hovius reportstthat vital records of the parish of Lakenham are almost barren. Working from tax records, muster records and others, he did find traces of a Jenney family in Norwich, including a John Jenney, but could not conclude that he had found John Jenney of Plymouth.4
'In the 1623 Plymouth land division 'John Jenings' was granted five acres as a 1623 arrival [PCR 12:5]. In the 1627 Plymouth cattle division "John Jene . . . his wife Sarah Jene" and Samuell, Abigail, amd Sara Jene were the first five persons in the twelfth company [PCR:12:13]."5 He left a will on 28 Dec 1643 at Plymouth Colony. This will named his wife Sarah, eldest son Samuell, and the rest "of my said children John, Abigail, Sarah, and Susan; "whereas Abigail my eldest daughter had somewhat given her by her grandmother and Henry Wood of Plymouth aforesaid is a suitor to her in way of marriage my will is that if she the said Abigaile will dwell one full year with Mr. Charles Chauncey of Scituate before her marriage --- that then my said daughter Abigail have two of my cows and my full consent to marry the said Henry Wood" Mayflower Descendant 6:166-79, citing PCPR 1:50. I [DWO] have not found anyone trying to get more on this grandmother.6
