Owen Summers was born on 23 May 1850 at Brockville, Canada.3,4 He married Clara Temperance Olds, daughter of George Daniel Olds and Sarah A. Fairbanks, on 23 Jul 1880.1,5,6 Owen Summers died on 2 Feb 1911 at age 60.3,7 He was buried at Riverview Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon.3
Owen Summers and Clara Temperance Olds appeared on the census of 14 Jun 1900 at Portland, Multonomah County, Oregon, as follows:
Summer, Owen, b. June 1857, age 48, marr. 20 yrs, b. Canada, parents b. Canada, merchant, crockery
, Clara, wife, b. May 1859, age 41, marr. 20 yrs, b. Oregon, father b. Ohio, mother b. Iowa
, Owen, son, b. May 1890, age 10, b. Orego, father b. Iowa, mother b. Oregon
Crocker, Sadie, servant, b. Dec. 1876, 23, single, b.Nebraska, father b. Pennsylvania, mother b. New York, servant.8
"The purpose of this story is to enlighten you on the person who is alternately referred to as Oregon’s “First Volunteer” and “The Father of the Oregon National Guard”.
"Owen Summers was born in Brockville, Canada, on June 13, 1850. At the age of two, his parents, John and Elizabeth Ann Summers moved the family to Chicago, Ill., where his father worked as a cobbler. Five years later, Owen and four siblings were left as orphans after his parents and a younger sister died during the cholera epidemic.
"Six year old Owen was taken to a farm near Frankfort, Ill., and spent most of his youth working on the farm in exchange for room and board. He attended a small schoolhouse in La Center, Lee County, Ill.
"At the age of 12, Owen and three of his schoolmates tried to enlist in the Army to join the ranks of those fighting in the Civil War, but were refused by recruiting officers because they were too young. Undeterred, Owen tried unsuccessfully twice more. On his fourth attempt to enlist in 1865, he garnered the help of a Pennsylvania Dutchman, who consented to become his guardian. With the permission of this man, the examining Army surgeon granted his acceptance into the United States Army. He was barely 14 years old.
"On February 1, 1865, Owen joined Company H, Third Illinois Cavalry. He served in the eastern part of Mississippi, and later in Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and the Carolinas. Following the close of the war, his unit was ordered to St. Louis, Mo., and fought against the Sioux Indians in Minnesota and the Dakotas before being mustered out of the service on Dec. 11, 1865.
"In January, 1875, he headed west, taking odd jobs and bouncing back and forth between San Francisco, San Diego, and Portland. He eventually settled in Portland, Ore., where he and his brother-in-law, J.C. Olds, founded a crockery and glassware business known as Olds & Summers. The company occupied a building at No. 183 First Street in downtown Portland.
...
"On July 23, 1880, Summers married Clara T. Olds, a native of Oregon, and sister to his old business partner, J.C. Olds. The two had only one child, Owen George.
"In his later years, Summers became active in civic and social circles. He joined the Commercial Club, Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He also became a Mason, and was a charter member of Columbia Lodge No. 114.
"Summers died of pneumonia in Portland, Ore., on Feb. 2, 1911. He was 60. He is buried in River View Cemetery in Portland, Ore.
"The title of “Father of the Oregon National Guard” is appropriate, given Summers’ accomplishments throughout his life. The legacy Summers created lives on in the evolution of the 2d Oregon Regiment to what we know today as the 2nd Infantry, 162nd Battalion, also earning him the title of “Oregon’s First Volunteer”.
"Moreover, his effort to create Oregon’s militia lives on in today’s Oregon National Guard. Summer’s example of citizen-soldier, model businessman, and successful statesman, is a proud heritage to which all Oregonians can aspire.

Eugene Ridgely Swank was born on 10 Dec 1922 at Bonpas Township, Richland County, Illinois.1 He was the son of William Glenn Swank and Bertha Elise Ridgely.1 Eugene Ridgely Swank died on 27 Sep 1986 at age 63. I learned of his death by phone from Doris Olds, 28 Sept. He died of a massive heart attack without prior warning.
When Gene was about three months old, he made the trip from Illinois to Montana by train. His mother carried him in a basket for this provided him with a bed and left her better able to care for Gene's sister Eunice who was not yet two years old. From then on his home was Montana. After his marriage, he and Pearl were at the Swank Ranch, and when his father retired, Gene took over the management of the ranch, where they raised cattle and grain. It is located near Poplar, Montana.2
"As I try to review 1986, my brother, Eugene's sudden, unexpected death of a massive heart attack the last of September looms so tragic it blocks out other items in memory. Harvey & I drove to Gridley; then we and Chimes and Evelyn flew to Montana. Many, many attended his funeral at the country Zion Lutheran Church, September 30, a warm, beautiful fall day. It just seems unreal that he is gone, without known cause or previous warnings. All of the recitings of: at least he didn't suffer or waste away; we have many pleasant memories; Mark has partnered in the farming operation, so he can be pretty knowledgeable stepping into management --- all seem hollow. It will take time and be an adjustment for all."3

"She was a lifetime member of the Church of the Brethren and a charter member of W.O.W. She was a member of the Christian Librarian's Association.
"Some of the things she enjoyed were traveling, quilting, embroidery and collecting owls. She especially enjoyed being with her family and friends.
"Preceding her in death was her husband, Harvey Yoder; her brother, Eugene Swank; and her sister Evelyn Johnson.

She graduated on 29 May 1943 from Poplar High School, Poplar, Roosevelt County, Montana.4
"At a beautiful candlelight ceremony at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, November 23 in the New Paradise Church of the Brethren, Miss Evelyn Swank, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Swank of Poplar, Montana, became the bride of Chalmer Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Johnson of Gridley, California.
"Rev. George Burcham from Modesto, California., preformed [sic] the double-ring ceremony.
"To the soft music from a piano and violin, tall tapers were lighted on either side and center back of the altar, flanked with gold, white and pink chrysanthemums.
"Miss Wanda Johnson, sister of the groom sang "at Dawning" and "Through the Years", followed by a violin solo, "Oh Promise Me" by Miss Virginia Garvey from LaVerne, California. Both were accompanied by Miss Arlene Johnson, also a sister of the groom, and who played the wedding marches.
"To the strains of Lohengrin's Wedding March, the bride entered the church beautifully dressed in a white satin and net gown with a train and fingertip veil, and carrying a bouquet of roses and white carnations.
"Miss Eunice Swank, sister of the bride, from Poplar, Montana, was the maid-of-honor, gowned in aqua georgette, who carried white baby 'mums and pink carnations.
"The best man was Mr. Ellwood Johnson, the groom's brother.
"Immediately following the ceremony, the bride and groom cut the tiered wedding cake in the church social hall, and guests were served cake, ice cream, and coffee.
"The bridal couple left in a shower of rice, for a week's honeymoon, touring points of interest in northern California. For her going away outfit, Mrs. Johnson wore a black and gray suit with matching accessories, and a corsage of roses and carnations. After Dec. 2, the couple will make their home in Yuba City, California, where Mr. Johnson is a junior high school instructor.
"Out-of-town guests were the bride's mother and sister, Mrs. Glenn Swank and Miss Eunice Swank, from Poplar, Mont; Miss Virginia Garvey from LaVerne, California; and Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Burcham and family from Modesto, California.

"Dr. Mario is principal in Redding. Greg drives truck in Las Vegas. Reed, Brad, and Monte farm near here. Kaye is working for an eye Dr. and taking nursing training. Kurt is a Dr. in Chico. Corine is still in a care home in Paradise. Lynn lives in Gridley and is expecting her first baby, which we know will be a boy. Lora lives in Durham and in between jobs."6
"Evelyn died at home, shortly before noon, on Sept. 20, 1998, after battling a long illness of diabetes and heart disease. She was born March 8, 1925, in Froid, Montana, the third child of W. Glenn and Bertha W. Swank. She grew up on a wheat and cattle ranch in northeastern Montana. She attended school in Poplar, Montana and graduated from Poplar High School. In 1946 she married Chalmer (Chimes) Johnson. They both taught school in Yuba City before settling on a prune farm in Gridley, California. They raised a family of ten children, Mario Johnson of Redding, Greg Johnson of Las Vegas, Nevada, Reed Johnson of Gridley, Kaye Gorton of Antelope, Kurt Johnson, of Durham, Corine Johnson of Paradise, Brad Johnson of Gridley, Lynn Mendoza of Yuma, Arizona, Lora Sharp of Durham, and Monte Johnson of Gridley. Her extended family also includes, 25 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, as well as many others who considered her their "second" mom.
"Evelyn was a giving person. At various times she was active in 4H, the Concilio Mexicano, Heifer Project International. She was instrumental in starting both a private school and Live Oak Child Care at the Live Oak Church of the Brethren. She also served on the State Child Care Board. With ten children she had to be a creative and resourceful home maker. Her bread was legendary. Sewing clothes for the children and grandchildren was one of her many joys. She and her surviving sister, Eunice Yoder, made quilts for each of the children and grandchildren. She lived a fulfilling and happy life dedicated to her family, church and friends.
"Those wishing to be a part of the celebration of her life are welcome to come October 25 to the Live Oak Church of the Brethren (1990 Archer Ave.), at 12:00 noon (immediately following the morning worship service). The family requests no flowers. If desiring to make a donation, make it to the Live Oak Child Care and Live Oak Church of the Brethren. A fellowship luncheon will follow the celebration service. William Glenn Swank was born on 1 Feb 1895 at Johnstown, Pennsylvania.1 He married Bertha Elise Ridgely, daughter of Ira Oscar Ridgely and Maranda Bowers, on 15 Oct 1919 at Walnut Grove Church, Bonpas Township, Richland County, Illinois.2,3 William Glenn Swank married (2) Edith Rice on 31 Dec 1961 at Florida. She was Mrs. Edith Drake when they married.4 William Glenn Swank died on 9 May 1978 at Avon Park, Highlands County, Florida, at age 83.1 He was buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery, near Parkersburg, Richland County, Illinois.1
William Glenn Swank was usually called Glenn. He registered with the World War I Selective Service System on 5 Jun 1917 at Sheridan, Montana. He described himself as living at Froid, Montana, age 22, born 1 Feb 1895 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and his occupation was farming for himself. He was medium in height, stout in build, with blue eyes and had light brown hair. He claimed exemption from the draft on the basis of " _____ of Church of the Brethren". He signed W. Glenn Swank.5
"Glenn was born near Johnstown, Pa. As a small boy he went with his parents to North Dakota where he received his early schooling. In 1908 they moved to northeastern Montana, where his parents took a homestead.
"While attending Mr. Morris College in Illinois, he met Bertha Ridgely. They were married and lived on the homeplace when his parents moved to Sebring, Fla., in 1919. A son and two daughters came to bless the home.
"Over a period of years they built a rather large cattle and grain farm, which the son now manages. During the summer months, Glenn still works part time as an employee on the farm.
"The past several years Glenn and Bertha spent the winter months in Sebring. On the return trip in 1959 Bertha died at her hometown in Illinois. Now Glenn spends the winter months fishing and helping to develop the Lorida part of the Florida Brethren Homes project."6
William Glenn Swank and Edith Swank lived at Lorida, Florida.
His obituary states:
"Glen[sic] Swank, 83, a former resident of Richland County and for the past several years a resident of Sebring, Fla., died yesterday at the Walker Hospital in Avon Park, Fla.
"Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Walnut Grove cemetery at Parkersburg with the Summers Funeral Home in charge. There will be no visitation.
"Mr. Swank was born in Johnstown, Pa., the son of William and Susannah Hanawalt Swank. He was married to Bertha Ridgely who preceded him in death April 9, 1959. He was later married in Florida. He was a retired farmer.
"He is survived by his wife, Ethel[sic]; three children; Eunice Yoder and Evelyn Johnson, both of California, and Eugene Swank, Poplar, Mont; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step children, Ruth Linn ad [sic] Paul Drake, both of Sebring, Fla; brothers and sisters, Harry, George, and Paul Swank, Mary Boyd and Martha Horton, all of Sebring, Fla., and Margaret Langdon, Lorida, Fla."7
"I hardly know where to start this letter. So I guess I'll begin by saying, for the benefit of those who may not have heard, that Glenn had a heart attack and massive stroke between 7 and 8 p.m. on a Monday at the fish farm. When he did not come home for supper, I went to check and found him in his shop propped on a high stool. A neighbor helped me call an ambulance and the doctor. He only lived a few hours after arriving at the hospital. Date and time of death was May 9 at 12:30 a.m. I am sure this is the way he would have wanted it to happen. He was where he loved to be and doing what he enjoyed -- taking care of his fish."8
