In 1983, Bob shared some of his childhood memories:
"My parents moved to ND in the spring of 1902 and I was around 3 1/2 years old and at that time even kids had to work. We lived in Portal ND and father made money $4.50 a day as a carpenter and was very happy because when we left Illinois he got only $1.50 a day. The folks also wanted to get a shack built on the homestead befor[e] winter set in and also a barn for a cow, four horses, chickens and a pig. So there was lots to do and a short time to do it. But we did it in time. There we an unknown person no trees to chop down for fuel but on homestead about 5 miles from ours there was lignite coal sticking out of the ground and the man who owned the land would let people come and dig it and he only charged them for about a 2 ton load, which was $1.00 a load. For my first Christmas in ND I got 6 jelly beans, I was the youngest, the other kids got a fewer amount.
"My father and mother used to make a visit the folks in Illinois after we sold the homestead and moved closer to railroads as it was easier to go. I dont know if your father and mine were school mates but I dont think so because my father never had much schooling. Mother used to teach him quite a lot evenings."4 By about 1978, Bob had retired and was living at Bellingham, Washington.1
In 1980, Bob Dollahan wrote to Doris Olds about the spelling of his name:
"You might wonder why I spell my last name Dollahan. In looking at the Dollahan family tree it is spelled three of[sic] more different [ways]. When I happened to be in large cities I would search the phone book for the name. One time I was in Chicago I found one[.] He was an Attorney and he spelled his name with (han) and I asked him why and he said that so many people asked him why he spelled it (hon) and pronounced it (han) I told him that was why I changed the spelling. He said his father was the son of my father's uncle."5
Bob also wrote about his Masonic membership:
"I never mentioned this to you before because the Dunkard church never believed in belonging to a lodge. I joined the Masons in 1929 and I have done a lot of work in the Blue Lodge as well as in the Chapter and Commandery. When Mother found out I had joined the Masons she had a fit but after several years and some education on the subject she changed her mind and told me she was glad I had joined. She said the Bible said it was a sin to membership in a secret organization, so one day I told her that no one could have a secret from God and that if two or more people knew something they could not have a secret. ... My good wife Agnes was a Past Worthy Matron in the Eastern Star for over 50 years too. I know that uncle Sams son Sam was a mason and my fathers brother Jerome was one and thats that."6
On 20 Aug 1990, "E. & K. Rude" sent Doris and Bob Olds two sheets of paper prepared in memory of Bob Dollahan. The first is headed "Robert B. Dollahan, July 23,1898 -- August 10, 1990" and continues:
"The fourth of six children, Robert was born in Illinois to Franklin and Delilah Dollahan. When he was four, the family homesteaded in Western North Dakota, later moving to Kemmare. Bob had an eventful childhood on the prairie; he often told stories about those times. Many of those stories included animals. He had a pet crow that would come and sit on his head while he ploughed. He told of his loyal dog who babysat the baby while he and his mother fetched the cows who had strayed. But while the dog was a very protective babysitter, he took a dimmer view of gophers. In fact, he took great delight in depleting the gopher population. While the family approved this activity, they didn't approve of the way another of Bob's pets treated the family's chickens. Bob understood why they had to destroy the pet wolf he had raised from infancy. Of course, no childhood would be complete without running away. Bob did that too. He thought he'd leave home, maybe catch up with his dad at work. Along the road, he met his Grandpa Bowers who asked "Where are you going?" Bob replied haughtily, "I don't talk to strangers!"
"By 1922, Bob was old enough to marry Agnes Mikkelson. That same year, he became a member of the Masonic Lodge, later becoming a charter member of Malta Lodge 131. In 1927, his daughter Katherine was born. Bob, often with his daughter, enjoyed many activities like bowling, skating, golf and other sports. At this time, Bob was working as an office supply salesman. Since he much enjoyed talking to people and since as a salesman he met many folks, he much enjoyed his job.
"In 1954, Bob and Agnes moved to Kalispell, Montana where they took over an office supply business. During the years until they retired in 1967, they received many visits from their daughter, her husband Ervin Rude, and their daughters Kay Lynn and Roberta. After retirement, Bob and Agnes moved to Bellingham, Washington. When Agnes died in 1979, Bob remained active. He enjoyed working in his yard, which he kept beautifully right up till the age of 90. When he didn't get around so well anymore, he moved first to an apartment, then to an alternate care facility. Finally, when he broke his hip last Fall and was confined to a wheelchair, he moved to a nursing home, where he especially enjoyed receiving visitors and watching sports on television."
These pages also include memories from other family members and several pictures of Bob and Agnes.7

Edith Viola Dollahon was born on 8 Feb 1890 at West Salem, Edwards County, Illinois.1 She was the daughter of Henry Franklin "Frank" Dollahon and Delilah Susan Bowers.1 Edith Viola Dollahon married Ora Earl Ankenbauer on 24 Nov 1914 at Kenmare, Ward County, North Dakota.2 Edith Viola Dollahon died on 14 Dec 1985. This gives her calculated age as 95 years, 10 months and 6 days.3 She was buried on 18 Dec 1985 at Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare, Ward County, North Dakota.4
"A pretty wedding was solemnized last week at Kenmare, when Rev. Mr. Speaker united in marriage Miss Edith Dallahan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dallahan, and Earl Ankenbauer, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Ankenbauer, at the home of the bride's parents."5
     "Edith Ankenbauer celebrating 90 years
[Pictured with multi-tiered cake]
"Another of Kenmare's longtime residents, Mrs. Edith Ankenbauer, will celebrate her 90th birthday on Friday, Feb. 8, with open house at her home in the apartment complex at 304 1st Ave. N. W. from two to five in the afternoon.
"Everyone is invited to stop for a cup of coffee, however, Mrs. Ankenbauer requests no gifts, please.
"Edith Dollahan [sic] was born Feb. 8, 1890 at West Salem, Ill., Edward [sic] County, to Frank and Lila Dollahan. She was the eldest of six children, and came to this area with her parents at the age of twelve, when her father homesteaded 20 miles east of Portal. There was no school in that area, so her father, a carpenter, with the assistance of his daughter, Edith, and son, Glenn, built the schoolhouse, where they were to receive their education.
"Not only did she help in the carpentering department, but she and her brother also broke the first thirty acres of sod on their homestead and seeded it to flax when they were but 12 and 11 years of age. Edith remarks that neither was big enough to do the job alone, so Glenn drove the horses while Edith held the plow.
"Her parents sold their homestead and moved to Kenmare in 1906, where her father farmed and also delivered milk to Kenmare residents, and not in bottles or cartons either! Milk was carried from place to place in a milk can and measured out in quart jars.
"Edith married Earl Ankenbauer on November 24, 1914, at Kenmare, at an age when she was considered an "old maid of 25". They lived on farms and rented land for the first ten or twelve years, then purchased land west of Kenmare, where they built farm buildings and made their home until selling to their youngest son, John, and moving into the newly constructed apartment complex in July, 1970.
"Ten of her eleven children are living, including two sets of twins. The eldest, Richard, makes his home in Kenmare but spends the winters at Peculiar, Mo; Doreen Ankenbauer Bushey passed away in 1957; twins, Elizabeth Jones and Katheryn Berney reside Portland, Ore., and Wichita, Ks., respectively; Robert lives at Vancouver, Wn; Berlin farms west of Kenmare; twins Forrest of Minnequakan and Foster of Kenmare; Joe and John of Kenmare and the youngest Shirley Schletty, lives at White Bear Lake, Mn. She has thirty-nine living grandchildren and one deceased; and thirty-four [this has been marked out and replaced by 28] great-grandchildren Sixty-one members of this group gathered at the Kenmare Senior Citizens' Center during the Thanksgiving weekend, 1979, to celebrate the occasion of her 90th birthday.
"Although she has used a wheelchair most of the time since August, 1979, she continues to live in her home, caring for herself. She spends much of her sparetime making quilts, some tied and some quilted. She believes she has made about seventy since moving into Kenmare. She also does crocheting and embroidery work. Probably one of the things most enjoyed by Mrs. Ankenbauer is reminiscing early days with relatives and friends, something she is able to do with absolute clearness of mind. She laughs when she tells how her father had $3.75 in his picket [sic] when he arrived on his homestead, and how they used Karo syrup instead of butter, since they had no cows from which they could get cream to make butter; what a treat it was to have cake made with eggs for Christmas (they had no chickens); how they got along with having mostly salt pork for meat and raisin pudding for dessert, and lots of homemade bread.
"Although brother Glenn has passed away, as did a baby [the word baby has been marked out in this copy] brother, Bruce, a brother and two sisters are still living. Brother Bob is 81 years old and lives at Bellingham, Wn; Ruth is 85 and resides at Paramount, Ca; and Mary, 77, is at Marshfield, Wisc."6
Edith wrote to Doris Olds of several of her family memories in February, 1980. This letter was written after she had recieved a copy of the Bowers book and thus is not directly a source of the stories there, although the letter may be somewhat prompted by those stories. It was also written after the family celebration of her 90th birthday, the newspaper coverage of which has some of the same material.
"... I guess I will begin by telling some things I remember before we left Illinois. I have a handkerchief grandma gave me for Christmas. I used to hear grandpa tell of when they lived in Iowa the wolves were big and bad and at nignt they would come and run over the barn and howl it must have been a straw or sod barn.
"One night they were having communion at the church and grandma was not able to go so we kids and Bertha and Howard stayed with her. Some one knocked on the door and grandma thinking it was one of the boys said come in if your nose is clean and in walked Dr. Canby.
"I liked to eat at grandpas they would always eat the fat meat and give me the lean.
"I never remember seeing grandma read but grandpa did lots of reading he either read the Bible or Josephus. Grandpa liked cucumbers he would go to the garden and hunt for a large one then peal it and eat it with some salt, my mother-in-law used to say don't eat them before they were put in vinegar they are poison I said I knew better as my grandpa lived to be one hundred.
"I remember a turkey had her nest accross[sic] the road from the house and a chicken snake was eating the eggs and grandpa killed it and when he hit it he broke the egg and it ran out of its mouth.
"After butchering hogs for grandpa he[who? --DWO] was raking up the hair and burning and of course I was always sticking around and I said phew that hair smells and grandpa said no the hair stinks and you smell and I said I did not smell then he said well then the hair smells and you stink after several arguments about it I got really mad and he laughed.
"I remember mother telling me about she, aunt Fannie and aunt Randa were digging to plant flowers and they had spread manure on the beds and were looking for some thing to stir it around and aunt Randa picked up an iron rod and said what is this and aunt Fannie said thats a crane and aunt Randa said well I'll make a 'shite polk' out of it.
"I also heard them telling of little Willie, aunt Fannie's little boy always called himself Waddie and they told him don't say Waddie say Willie and he said oh but Waddie can't say Widdie, and one time aunt Elise was after him and he ran behind the door and his toes stuck out from under the door and aunt Elise was pulling at them and he said 'Oh Uncle Dan this is a good place not to be'
"One Saturday grandpa & grandma went to church and waited and no one showed up and they then found it was Saturday instead of Sunday.
"I remember Dora Bowers when she had her son she stayed at grandpas and after he was a few months old she made the babys father marry her she held him in her arm during the ceremony and he, the fellow she married, had borrowed a horse & buggy to go to the fellow that married them and he took her home and said 'now I will take the horse home['] and he never came back. I guess the reason I remember that so well is because Dora was always cryng.
"By the way mother was one of the ones who got a coverlet made in 1856 my Shirley has it now she and her daughters will always treasure it.
"We used to go to Uncle Oscar's on the 4th of July and have ice cream and then get so cold we would get covers and lay on the floor to get warm that is us kids did Bertha was the one who told me who was Santa Claus what a disappointment. we were on the roof of the porch.
"The last time I saw Bertha was at District Conference at Minot she and I roomed together and talked most of the night. After a meeting the women would all gather to primp a little even the ministers wives and we had to wait until they gave us room to get to the toilet and Bertha said 'Im glad I was born pretty['] and I agreed with her.
"I went to Uncle Sams and stayed a week once we rolled down hill and the next day we were so stiff and sore we could not do much playing also aunt Millie set the dinner table under a tree in the yard she had chicken for dinner and I remember the yellow jackets like chicken also as we could hardly keep them of[f] the chicken. We kids would go down to the creek and try to catch those big frogs. Aunt Millie would let us fry the legs (my mother wouldn't) they were hard to catch and we had some all ready to fry but wanted more so had them in a pan of water and while we were gone the cat ate what we had. We would go to the bridge and scare the snakes which would lay on the timbers under the bridge before we went under once I slipped on the bank and fell in the creek and instead of getting up and coming out of the water I crawled all the way accross the creek the snakes surely got a scare (they were water moccasins).
"I never cared to go to aunt Fanny's I guess I didn't like uncle Benton but I did enjoy visiting with Sam & Ella when I visited in Ill a few years ago.
"We moved to N. D. when I was 12 years old & the Forneys, Hedricks, & the Dollahons all came together and brot their belongings in one box car. Mr. Forney came with the box car and the rest of us on the immigrant train when we got to Minot we were snow bound so had to live in the coach for five days while in Minot the folks filed for a claim we then went to Portal that town is situated on the border part in the U.S and part in Canada we then lived in the box car for a few days then were told of a shack we could move into it was 12 x 14 so Forneys and us moved into it you can't imagine 12 of us living in so small a place with a cook stove a table and two beds and a trundle bed which was pushed under one of the beds during the day the small girls slept in it Glenn & I slept on the table and the parents and the 2 little boys slept in the beds with their parents. We lived that way until my father who worked at the carpender [sic] trade could earn enough money to buy lumber to build us a shack he got $3.00 a day. We had to be on the homestead by Oct. first so when that time came father had bought two horses and a wagon so we tore down the shack and loaded our belongings and went to the homestead which was 20 miles west of Portal then we had to build the shack back up again also we made a sod barn for the horses. We had no well so had to haul the water from a creek 4 miles from us which was Glenns and my job until winter we then melted snow, in the spring after the snow melted and filled the sloughs we used that water until it was so full of wiggle tails but the water seemed healthy as we did not get sick, we didn't boil it just strained it.
"We had no flies but misquitoes[sic] that is another story they were the torment of both humans and animals we would build smudges to smoke to keep them away and the stock was smart enough to come and stand in the smoke we still have misquitoes but not so bad.
"There were lots of gophers or flickertails as they are called this state is called the fickertail state one Sunday in early spring when every little low place was full of water we kids drowned out 80 we had a dog who stood by the holes and we would pour the water in the hole and when the gopher came he made quick work of him
"We also had lots of coyotes in those days and also some bad blizzards one blizzard covered our shack completely over and we had to crawl out of a little window of a small bed room which was built on the back of the house (by the way our main house was a 14 by 20 and served as both kitchen and living room also my parents bed room we kids slept in the little room.) then father went and shoveled out the door and windows he made 13 steps down to the door.
"We don't have blizzards like that any more. I don't know if you know what a mirage is I didn't until I came to Dakota I will try to describe them a lake 5 miles south of us which we couldn't see at anytime showed up one morning and looked to be about 1/2 mile from us and was as real as if it was always that close and once we saw the train which was north of us in Canada seven or eight miles and often the neighbors houses looked so close we would almost feel that we could call to them.
"We were without a school for about two years then father went to Williston 80 miles away with a petition signed by the neighbors for a school house then father had a school house to build with Glenn's and my help we accomplished it. We used it for school, church, and also we had literary every month. Before we had the school house we had church in our house every Sunday.
"There were no trees for miles except along the creek which is called Long Creek it started in the U.S. and flowed north into Canada and there it ran thru a deep gorge or canyon with very few places we could drive down, a beautiful place, I was baptized in Canada in that creek. Now the country is full of trees there were also trees along Des Sacs Valley, also along the Souris River but we were miles west of [t]here.
"Glenn & I the first summer broke 80 acres on the homestead and planted it to flax I was not strong enough to hold the plow (which was a walking plow) and drive the horses so Glenn walked along beside me and drove the horses father worked in Portal building so we could eat. I always say I was not old enough to file on a homestead but I sure helped turn one up side down. We were not naked but we didn't have a very great amount of clothes two dresses was my limit it was the same with all of us. I guess I have said enough if it isn't interesting thro it in the garbage, but I always feel glad that I helped my folks homestead and we were really pioneers and our neighbors were all like us none rich all came to Dakota to have some land to make a home for themselves. N. Dakota was once thot of only good for ranching and grain now it is one of the richest states with oil under it. also billions of tons of coal. I am sending you some pictures I tho't you might like. My 90th birthday was such a happy one my family had open house and served cake & coffee. There are 90 names on my guest book they also took me out to supper and there the orchestra played and sang happy birthday to me.
"I will send you a check for the family tree book I want it for John's wife my writing is getting poor [A fact not confirmed by anyone reading the letter -- DWO]
"Love, Edith."7

In 2001, I exchanged some email with Jerry Doty who supplied the following information about this Doty family.
"I have came across some information on Isaac Doty and Joanna Olds.
"They were married on 8 August, 1863, in Bureau County, Illinois. They are listed in the 1870 Carroll County Missouri census. From this, Frank Elsworth was born in Minn., on March 29, 1866. Ada A. was born on October 18, 1868. Ada died Feb. 19, 1869 and is buried in the Big Creek Cemetery, in Carroll County, Missouri. Joanna died July 1, 1875. She is also buried in the Big Creek Cemetery.
"Frank married Margaret F. Henderson, on October 18, 1893. They had two children, Mary E., b. 7/12/1894, and Robert Franklin, b. 11/11/1895. Mary married Eugene H. Dimick, on 4/21/1917 and moved to Eudora, Kansas. She died in 1966. They had only one son, Lloyd. He is still living in Kansas. Robert moved to Calif. and died in 1976 and has two, possibly still living, children, Helen & Edgar.
"From the Carrollton Daily Democrat, Saturday May 23, 1896, the local newspaper, on May 22, Frank was shot and killed by Frank Kimball. Kimball gave himself up and claimed self-defense. The article listed it was over a misunderstanding between the two men over some corn.
"Frank's wife remarried and had one child. She, again outlived her husband and remarried. Margaret died 4/4/1945 and is buried, along side her first husband, Frank, in the Wakenda Baptist Cemetery, east of Carrollton, Carroll County, Missouri."3
