Timothy Olds was born on 6 Mar 1763 at Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut.1,2 He was the son of James Ould and Sarah Kingsley.1 Timothy Olds died b 24 Oct 1819.3
He "was a Revolutionary soldier, and in 1790 was living in Dalton, Mass."1 Another source reports the tradition that "His [i. e. William Parker Olds'] great-grandfather, Timothy Olds, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1752, and was with the American forces who fought in the battle of Bunker Hill."4
Timothy Olds signed with a group of enlistees for Revolutionary War services on "August ye 9th" with no year given, but the proclamation on which he enlisted was dated 1 July 1782 at Lebanon, Connecticut. As Timothy "Oles" he appeared on an undated Roll for Capt. Benj. Durkee's Company of Matrosses. He appears as a private on an undated payroll for this same company showing that he enlisted 9 Aug 1782 and was discharged on 9 Aug 1783. He served twelve months at two dollars per month. This service was in the Connecticut militia and one roll was signed at Ft. Trumbull.5
One source says this about Timothy Olds:
"... while his[i.e. James H. Olds'] paternal grandfather, Timothy, was born and partially reared in England, and came to the colonies in America when a youth. At the age of nineteen the grandfatlier enlisted in the Revolutionary war as a private, and after participating in many of the best known battles was present at the surrender of Cornwallis. After the war he was ordained a Baptist minister, and during his ministry took part in the stirring events which have made his time memorable for its hideous religious intolerance. In accordance with the Massachusetts decree : " Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live," he was present at the hanging of a number of supposed witches, but just what attitude he assumed in regard to this travesty of justice is not clearly defined. From Massachusetts he removed to New York state, and later to Seneca county, Ohio, where he died."6
Timothy Olds appeared on the census of 1790 at Dalton, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, as follows:
1 male over 16, 3 females.7
An inherited family manuscript dealing mainly with the family of Kingsley Olds, son of Timothy, relates that Kingsley moved with his parents in 1798 to Onondaga County, New York, with an ox team and wagon, and in 1813 they moved to Huron County, Ohio, near Bloomsville.8
Timothy Olds appeared on the census of 1800 at Pompey, Onandaga County, New York, as follows:
3 males under 10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female under 10, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 26-45.9
Timothy Olds appeared on the census of 1810 at Pompey, Onandaga County, New York, as follows:
2 m under 10, 1 m 10-15, 1 m 16-25, 1 m over 45, 1 f under 10, 1 f 10-15, 1 f 16-25, 1 f 26-44.10
Estate papers for Timothy Olds were filed in Huron County, Ohio in Nov. 1819 and guardianship papers for some of his orphans were filed Feb. 1820. On 28 March 1821, Josiah G. Holbrook and Archibald P. Jackson, both of Oxford Township, petitioned the Court of Common Pleas of Huron County, claiming expenses for raising two of the orphan children of Timothy Olds. Kingsley Olds and William Riche were administrators. Three hundred dollars had been ordered to be set aside to support the orphans but this had not been done. At the Oct. 1826 term of court, Archibald P. Jackson filed a list of expenses showing that "October 24th 1819 Milisa Olds aged six years and three months and Ruel Olds aged about 12 years commenced boarding with me" and listing subsequent expenses.11
Researcher Virginia Treacy-Thomas has posted a list, a composite from her research to that time, of the children of Timothy and Polly (Russ) Olds as follows:
This indicates where I [DWO] have more research to do on these children i.e. especially the children Polly Susan, Herman Gideon, Timothy Ira, and Medula. This list shows Polly was having children over a range of 30 years. In November, 2010, when I called the Huron County Probate Office about the estate papers of Timothy Olds, they reported that their index showed none. However, Virginia Treacy-Jones has said "By the way, the probate records are from Huron Co., Ohio and I found them at the Family History Center on their microfilm #1303066."14 Images of the loose papers for the estate of Timothy Olds, late of Oxford Township in Huron County are now available online. The bond is dated 13 Nov 1819 and there are inventory and sale records. No date of death and no heirs are mentioned in the estate papers and only two children are mentioned in the guardian papers.3

Tirza Olds was born on 11 May 1767 at Ware, Massachusetts.1,2 She was the daughter of Jonathan Olds and Hannah Jones.1 Tirza Olds was buried at Liberty Cemetery, Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.3 She died on 15 Apr 1839 at age 71.4
She died 23 Sept. 1810 according to E. B. Olds. However, a photograph of her stone shows the inscription to be "Miss Tirzah Olds, died April 15, 1839, ae 72". Noon gives the date as 13 April 1839 (which is also a possible reading of the stone). It is clear that Olds has interchanged the death dates of Tirzah and David. She was the heroine of the ballad "Nick and Tarzy, O____".5 The story has been reprinted several times. One of the best is in The History of Ludlow.
"Nick and Tarzy"
"Melancholy was the story of "Nick and Tarzy" who were very worthy people.
"Nicholas Daniels lived in the eastern part of town on the farm of which the "Ould Burying Ground" was once a part. Thirza Olds lived over the line in Belchertown.
"Nick was a fine specimen of the Yankee of the olden time with his "cue" tied with strips of eel-skin. He always wore a blue coat with shining buttons, regulation knee-breeches, his stockings being very smooth and fair. His shoe buckles, large and shining silver, are treasured to this day by a descendant of his family.
"For nearly two score years, he visited Tarzy every Sunday night, fondly anticipating the day which never came. It is said that on "general training day" he never failed to bring Tarzy a goodly cake of hard gingerbread when he came home.
"Family legend claims that Nick had injured his hand with some sharp instrument. One cold, stormy Sunday evening in spring, he donned his best attire and despite warnings of his family, wended his way to Tarzy's fireside, along the path which he had trodded for forty years. Exposure to the storm brought on lockjaw and he died in Tarzy's home. Need we wonder that even the voluble McLean found his vocabulary straitened when he undertook to offer Thirza words of consolation?
"Afterward poor Tarzy lived but to keep Nick's memory green. She observed training day, never failing to bake gingerbread of a most golden hue, which she distributed in her lover's name to the children who came to see her. She always turned her cow out to pasture on the anniversary of his death, and walked to Three Rivers, carrying her butter and eggs to exchange for tea and snuff. Going and returning, she never failed to pay a visit to his grave.
"Anny Olds, a tiny tot, went with her one of the last times Tarzy made the journey. Anny carried a little basket with some eggs as a venture of her own. When the store was reached, she bartered the eggs for two dainty little salt cellars, one of which is still treasured in the family.
"When the travelers reached Tarzy's home, Anny was offered some of the gingerbread, but, remembering the color of the snuff, she declined for the first and last time to accept it. Tarzy was soon laid to rest near Nicholas in the "Ould burying ground", just across the line on the Belchertown side. As in life, they are divided. Her grave is marked with a fair stone, but, sad irony of fate! the most prominent word of Tarzy's epitaph is the word "Miss".
"A local bard wrote the quaint ballad, "Nick and Tarzy, O!" containing the story of their love. When the centennial of Ludlow was celebrated in 1874, this ballad was printed, distributed among the people, and sung to the tune of "Benny Havens".
"Into the conversation current of a generation has passed the expression "Courting as long as Nick and Tarzy". The text of the ballad is in the reference.
