"Uncle DAN OLDS has passed on. He was 83, and the years had touched him lightly. He was as erect as a boy and his facilities unimpaired." -The Marin Journal, Thursday, March 26, 1896.
"At the age of 83, Uncle DAN OLDS passed away. He was a brother of the late N. H. Olds, who at one time was sheriff of this county. DAN OLDS once represented the people of Marin in the State Legislature, and there is nothing we could say about him which is not familiar with our readers. He was a peculiar man in many respects, but withal an honest and noble-minded citizen." --Marin County Tocsin, Saturday, March 28, 1896.8
In his 1927 letter, A. J. Olds wrote about this family:
"My son has just received your letter asking as to the origin of his name, and also something of the family.
"My father Daniel Olds was born in Ohio Feb. 22, 1812. His father was born in New Hampshire, 1785 and his father, my great great grandfather was a soldier in the Revolutionary war.
"As a young man, my father went [to] Michigan and was a sailor on the Great Lakes for several years, was first mate of the first propellor on Lake Michigan. From Michigan, he went to Missouri and in the spring of 49 fitted out at St Jo, and with two sisters and his father started across the plains for California, arriving in Harrytown, now Placerville, in September.
"After six or seven years in the mines, he returned to Michigan and married my mother, (this time by the Isthmus)
"Returning, he was on the s[t]eamer "North America"9, wrecked off the Coast of Mexico, in 56. On his return, he settled in Marin Co. and in 66 was elected to the legislature from Marin Co.
"If by any chance you should visit this coast, you can find a picture of that Legislature with the members signatures at Sutters fort, Scaremento [sic].
"My father had one brother, Nelson Olds, who ser[v]ed in the navy during the Mexican war. He was discharged on this coast and he and my father were partners for years.
"I have heard Father speak of another branch of the family, cousins of his who moved from Ohio to Michigan and also of a Dr. Burchard whom he met at Panama (a first cousin)
"Now, as to the name. I have heard my father speak of Edson being quite common [in] the Olds family, and the [middle name?] comes from Burchard, his mothers maiden name.
"This is about all I can think of for the present. I should like to hear from you, and, if you ever come to Reno, hunt me up, as I should like to meet you.
Very truly Yours,
A. J. Olds."1

"Engineer Olds Ran By the Signals
"Norwalk, Conn., Aug. 10. --- Coroner Doten this afternoon completed his investigation into last Thursday's head-on collision, and returned a finding which will result in the arrest of Engineer Daniel Olds of the passenger train on a charge of manslaughter. The engineer paractically admitted running by the signals set against him. It is said that the action of Engineer Olds is as mysterious to himself as to his many friends, He has long been connected with the road and has always been regarded as a careful engineer."6
His obituary in the Hartford Courant (which I can not relocate) says he was born in West Stockbridge, Mass., and was age 57.
     Another obituary for Daniel states:
"Daniel S. Olds, the oldest engineer on the New Haven Railroad, died yesterday at his home, in Burling lane, New Rochelle, of injuries received in a collision on Aug. 6 between a passenger train, of which he was engineer, and a freight train at Norwalk, Conn. He was for thirty-five years in the employ of the railroad. He was born in West Brockridge, Mass., fifty-seven years ago. He had lived in New Rochelle for the past three years. He leaves a widow. His son, Charles O. Olds, who was a newspaper man in this city, died about a month ago."7

The whole train, which was about twenty wagons, stopped and remained in camp nine days for the benefit of the sick and [to] give a chance for the stock to rest and recoup. During this stay a severe thunderstorm passed over which changed the condition of the sick so suddenly we were able to resume our journey but did not travel far before George Olds, a brother of Green Olds, was taken sick with the same complaint."7
Darwin G. Olds of Washington County was born in 1824 in Hanover County, Ohio, arrived in Oregon in October or November, 1852, and settled the claim on 22 June 1853. Darwin Green Olds died at Goldendale, Washington, in October, 1907. His wife died at the same place in February, 1902. [Note that these dates are not in agreement with the tombstones or death records.]
"Darwin Green Olds and Evaline Eaton Olds had the following children: Frank Martin Olds; Hattie Eliza Olds; Fred Alverso Olds; and Rose Amelia Olds. It is understood that there were two other children, viz; Julia, born at Batavia, Mich., in 1843; and Eva, born at Middleton, Oregon, in 1853; both of whom died in infancy."9
"The father [of Mrs. Rosa Olds Brooks], who now lives with his daughter in Goldendale, is of English parentage and a native of Ohio, born in the year 1824. He went to Coldwater, Michigan, when a young man and resided there until 1852, when he crossed the Plains and settled at Middleton, Oregon. He was Middleton's postmaster for a quarter of a century; by trade he was a wagon maker and a blacksmith. Mrs. Olds was a native of Vermont, who went to Michigan as a child. She was educated in Michigan and there married. For many years previous to her marriage she taught school. Her death occurred at Goldendale in 1902."10

David Olds was born on 3 Mar 1771.1,2 He was the son of Jonathan Olds and Hannah Jones.1 Marriage banns for him and Sally Thornton were published on 23 Oct 1807 at Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.3 David Olds married Sally Thornton on 19 Nov 1807.4 David Olds died on 23 Sep 1811 at age 40.5 He was buried at Liberty Cemetery, Belchertown, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.6
     E. B. Olds shows this David Olds as marrying Sally Thornton and also shows Daniel Olds, son of Enoch, as marrying Sally Thornton.7
Noon shows this David Olds as marrying Sally Thornton and also David Olds, son of Enoch, as marrying Sally Thornton.
Corbin shows David Olds of Belchertown married Sally Thornton of Ludlow on 19 Nov 1807 and David Olds (same name) of Springfield married Sally Olds of Belchertown on 16 Dec 1813.
In 1798, David Olds was living in Belchertown on a farm owned by Hannah Olds. It contained 43 acres, bounded southerly by Palmer line, westerly by Justin Olds, northerly by Jno ----, easterly by Mas---- lot and included 1 house ($90) and 1 barn ($20) and the whole was evaluated at $230.8
David Olds appeared on the census of 1800 at Belchertown, Hampsire County, Massachusetts, as follows: David Olds, 1 male 16-25, 1 female 26-44, 1 female over 45. David was, however, age 29 at this time. Perhaps he had a wife before Sally Thornton. but the hypothesis that the women in this record were his single sister, Thirza, and his mother, Hannah, is consistent with their known ages.9
David Olds appeared on the census of 1810 at Ware, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, as follows: David Olds, 1 male under 10, 1 male 26-44, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44. David was about age 39 at this time, Sally was about 22.10
David's estate was probated in Dec. 1811 in Northampton, Mass. He died intestate by 23 Oct. 1811 and his administrators were his widow Sally Olds and Jonathan Olds. The widow was paid 61.37 for her share of the personal property and equal shares ($8.76 or $8.77) were given to Hannah Winslow, Justin Olds, Samuel Olds, Enoch Olds, Lurana Daniels, wife of Asa, Asenalth Lombard, wife of J??, and Tirzah Olds. Jonathan Lombard, Jr., signed for Asenath Lombard, Phillip Horton signed for Hannah Winslow, Nathan Olds signed for Lurana Olds (check name!, must have been Samuel), Asa Daniels signed for Lurana Daniels, and Enoch, Tirzah and Justin Olds signed.11

"The life of David E. Olds, who was for many years a resident of Newark, New Jersey, was one of local usefulness, and in his discharge of duty was demonstrated a nature of rare faithfulness, supplemented by that practical energy and sound common sense which led the man into a field of special significance to the welfare and prosperity of the people. Hundreds of miles of the finest highways throughout northern New Jersey attest the skill and sincerity of David E. Olds, and the progress which always follows in the path of good road construction has attended the sections where his work has been done. Mr. Olds was a man whose friendships formed a very large part of his life, and was widely known among the people of Newark and vicinity. He was, further, as widely beloved, for he was always ready with a cordial or encouraging word, always glad to extend a helping hand. His death was universally mourned where-ever his name was known.
"David E. Olds was born at Owego, New York, March 22, 1861, and was a son of David and Rosana (Seaman) Olds. His education was received in the public and high schools of Auburn, New York, where the family later resided, and during the early years of his business experience he was active as an auditor. Coming to Newark, New Jersey, in 1889, Mr. Olds engaged in road construction activities, and soon became a prominent figure in this field as a contractor. Eminently thorough in his methods, progressive also, and constantly keeping in touch with advanced ideas and standards in his field, Mr. Olds held a leading position in road contracting for many years, and his work is standing the test of time. As his son became of age to take up a man's work in the world, Mr. Olds received him into the business. Several hundred miles of public highway, macadam, wood block and brick construction, are new memorials of this man, whose quiet, yet forceful activities, benefited his fellowmen and contributed in a large and permanent way to the progress of his time.
"In the affairs of the city, the commonwealth and the nation, David E. Olds took a deep interest. He supported the Republican Party in affairs of both local and wider import, but never accepted the honors or responsibilities of public office, although he was long an influential member of the Newark Chamber of Commerce. He gave unfailing endorsement to every forward movement in civic affairs. Mr. Olds was a member of the Union Club, and the Road Horse Association, and affiliated himself in an unofficial way with various branches of benevolent and charitable endeavor.
"David E. Olds married, in 1883, Anna Amelia Renninger, daughter of Andrew and Barbara (Kapp) Renninber, both natives of the State of Pennsylvania. Five children were born to these parents, and with their mother, survive Mr. Olds. They are: 1. Alice D., now a teacher in Glen Ridge High School. 2. Franklin M., of further mention. 3. William R., who died in Porto Rico in 1912. 4. Martha, wife of Harry M. Ennis, of Newark. 5. Almeda, who died in infancy.
. . .
"The death of David E. Olds occurred May 31, 1917. Not only in the industrial organization of which he was the founder and head, but among all who were familiar with him or his work, he was sadly missed, and his passing is still deeply regretted. ...4 "

Alexander H. Olds prepared an autobiography in 1926. The typescript is 13 pages long and contains much detail of his life. This extract relates a few details of his father's family.
"I am writing this for my son Charlie and at his request.
"My father David Olds was a native of the state of Vermont. My mother was a native of the New York State. I have forgotten where or when they were married, but I remember being told they were married quite young. I was born on the 21st of June, 1849, at a place called Cherry Valley, Otsigo [sic]22, N. Y. I was the oldest of 5 boys and 2 girls [perhaps he did not include Sylvester and Minnie, whom I know only from E. B. Olds who shows them both as dying in infancy]. All of them passed away several years ago.
"Our mother passed away when she was probably about 35 years old. My father came west to Illinois at about the close of the Civil War. There he married a war widow having several children from her first husband, all of whom grew up to be good and useful citizens. There were 4 children born to my father and step mother, 2 boys and 2 girls. All of whom are still living and doing fine as far as I know. Now I wish to say after 3 or 4 short visits and after staying with them one winter that my step mother was of a lovely disposition, in fact one of the very best of mothers anyone could wish for. Our daughter, Melissa, was born at my father's home near Carleton, Nebraska on a Christmas Night."23
