Medad Hunt was born on 2 Jan 1742/43 at Lebanon, Connecticut.1 He was the son of Simeon Hunt and Hannah Lyman. Medad Hunt married Sarah Parker on 8 Nov 1764 at Tolland, Connecticut.2 Medad Hunt died on 15 Apr 1814. This gives his calculated age as 71 years, 3 months and 13 days.3 He was buried at Pleasant Valley (aka Ashland) Cemetery, Town of Ashland, Greene County, New York.3
From Volume 2, page 81 of the Tolland Town Clerk's record, we have the following record of this family:
"Medad Hunt of Coventry & Sarah Parker of Coventry were married Nov 8th Day 1764
"Mabel the Daughter of Medad Hunt and of his Wife Sarah was born March 2nd Day 1767
"Hannah the Daughter of Medad Hunt and of his Wife Sarah was Born May 31st Day 1775
"Sarah the Daughter of Ensn Medad Hunt & of his Wife Sarah was Born May 30th Day 1784."4
In May, 1773, Medad Hunt was one administrator of the estate of Aaron Barnard of Tolland, Connecticut.
Also, from May 1774, we have the following:
In 1776 the Connecticut Assembly provided for four battalions to be raised by voluntary enlistment and join the continental army. Medad Hunt was named ensign in the third battalion, serving under 2nd lieutenant Joshua Wells, 1st lieutenant Samuel Tudor, Captain William Orcutt, Jr., Major Amos Wilcox, lieutenant colonel Samuel Gale and colonel Roger Enos.7
Medad Hunt is listed under "New Ancestors" in the Suplement to the American Spirit Magazine for July/August 2021. "New Ancestors" are those "accepted by the NSDAR Board of Management between March 1, 2021 and April 30, 2021."8

The descent for the DAR member is " Verified but not entered into the Descendants Listing." Srephen Simmons is listed as another ancestor and shows her descent to be through George Bartlett Knight and wife Orenda Parker Simmons."9
On 25 Feb 1782, the town of Tolland appointed five men, including Medad Hunt, to hire five men to enter military service at Horseneck [now in Greenwich, Connecticut].10
In 1787, Medad had land for sale in Tolland, Connecticut, as shown by the following newspaper ad:
Medad Hunt later lived in what is now called Ashland (first called Scienceville) in Greene County, New York. [Greene County was formed from Albany and Ulster Counties (orginal New York counties) in 1800.] The first permanent settlers appeared in the area of Ashland in 1788. Medad Hunt probably moved from Connecticut to New York about the same time as Stephen Simmons (by 1790, to Albany County which became Greene County) and died in the Town of Windham, Greene County, New York, in 1814. Medad died intestate and his administrators were Sarah Hunt (surely the widow), Daniel Gunn who had married his daughter Sallie, and Jehiel Tuttle, who had married his daughter Hannah. No list of heirs remains in his estate file. Capt. Medad Hunt, as he was called, kept an Inn or Tavern. The first one was built in 1788. He was a carpenter or joiner by profession and built a much better Public House between 1795 and 1805.12
In 1795, the village included the store of Sanford Hunt and the inn of Medad Hunt. On 6 April 1790, he was13 one of those who was given a contract for 800 pounds to build a road from "Oulehoudt" Creek to Catskill on the Hudson. Because it was such a financial burden, the contractors were given more money in 1793.1415
On 15 Aug 1798, a list of taxpayers in Catskill, Ulster County, New York, eligible to serve as jurymen (perhaps under 60 years old and with real estate worth more than 60 pounds) included Medad Hunt, "Johiel" Tuttle, and "Pereay Steal", listed consecutively. Stephen Simmons was on the similar (undated) list for Windham, Ulster County.16
The First Congregational Church of Windham once stood at the site where Pleasant Valley Cemetery is "and many of the town's earliest citizens are buried in the oldest section of this cemetery."17 "[T]he people in 1799, had begun to build a meeting-house. It is a well authenticated tradition that some of the Prout family reached this valley on the last day of the last month of the last year of the last century (1799), and as they passed by they saw the people raising the frame of the old meeting-house, for which Medad Hunt gave the land."18
I found no Medad Hunt in the 1790 census of Connecticut. Medad is listed in the 1790 census of the town of Freehold, Albany Co., NY, with 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, and 3 females. Medad Hunt is listed in the 1800 census of Catskill township, Greene Co., NY, with 2 males 45 or over, 1 m. 16-26, 1 f. 26-44, and 1 f. 10-16, 1 f. 26-44, and 1 f. 45 or over. Stephen Simmons and his wife were in the town of Windham, age 26-44, with several children. Medad Hunt is listed in the 1810 census of Windham, Greene County, New York, immediately followed by Daniel Gunn, Ephraim Stinson, and Jehiel Tuttle. He is, of course, not listed in the 1820 census of Greene County, although Jehiel Tuttle and Daniel Gunn are.
"A letter written by Horace Hunt, April 18, 1814, stated that Medad Hunt (above) was burned to death in his bed."19
The only paper in Medad Hunt's estate file in the office of the Clerk of Surrogate Court, Greene County, NY, is an administrator's bond. Medad Hunt died intestate, a resident of the town of Windham. The bond for his estate is dated June 24, 1814. The administrators were Sarah Hunt, Jehiel Tuttle, and Daniel Gunn.20 These were surely the widow and two sons-in-law. His daughter Sallie had married Daniel Gunn and his daughter Hannah had married Jehiel Tuttle.21
From Volume 2, page 81 of the Tolland Town Clerk's record, we have the following record of this family:
"Medad Hunt of Coventry & Sarah Parker of Coventry were married Nov 8th Day 1764

"Sarah the Daughter of Ensn Medad Hunt & of his Wife Sarah was Born May 30th Day 1784."4
In May, 1773, Medad Hunt was one administrator of the estate of Aaron Barnard of Tolland, Connecticut.
"Upon the memorial of Ruth Barnerd, Medad Hunt and Moses Barnerd, administrators on the estate of Aaron Barnerd late of Tolland in the district of Stafford, deceas'd, shewing to this Assembly that the debts, charges and allowances due from the estate of the said deceased surmount the personal estate of the said deceas'd the sum of £47 16 5, lawful money ; praying for liberty to sell so much of the real estate of the said Aaron Barnard, deceas'd, as may be sufficient to raise the aforesaid sum of £47 16 5, money, for the payment of debts &c., as per memorial on file: Resolved by this Assembly, that the said Medad Hunt and Moses Barnard have liberty, and liberty and authority is hereby granted to them, to sell so much of the real estate of the said deceased as shall be sufficient to raise the said sum of £47 16 5, lawful money, for the payment of said debts with the incident charges arising on such sale; taking the directions of the court of probate in the district of Stafford therein."5
Also, from May 1774, we have the following:
"On the memorial of Moses Barnerd and Medad Hunt, administrators on the estate of Aaron Barnerd late of Tolland, deceas'd, shewing to this Assembly that a farther account of debts and charges allowed by the court of probate for the district of Stafford against the estate of the said deceas'd to the amount of £6 2 8, L. money, for the payment of which sum they have nothing in their hands; praying for liberty to sell real estate &c.: Resolved by this Assembly, that said administrators have liberty and they are hereby authorized and impowered, to sell so much more of the real estate of the said deceas'd as will raise the aforesaid sum of £6 2 8, L. money, with incident charges of sale; taking the direction of the court of probate for the district of Stafford therein."6
