     "Is Her Father's Efficient Deputy
"Mrs. Alma Clymer Has Charge of Co. Treasurer's Office.
"She Is Proprietor of One of Bellaire's Millinery Emporiums, and is a Thorough Business Woman.
"Mrs. Alma Clymer, deputy county treasurer and proprietor of one of Bellaire's millinery stores, is one of Antrim county's business women who bear their part in the business world in a manner equally as important as that of any business man.
"Born in Bunkerhill township, Ingham county, September 14, 1873, her parents came to Antrim county when she was seven years old, moving onto a place about five miles east of Alba. It was unbroken wilderness; not a stick had been cut, and there was only two houses -- little shacks, they could better be called -- between them and town. Mrs. Clymer was the oldest of the family, there was plenty of work to do in making and improving a farm and at the same time geting a living out of it, and being strong and well able to help she did a great deal of outdoor work. She did most all the different kinds of farm work aside from plowing and the running of the machines. Possibly this sounds a little queer, but in a new country -- a condition from which some of this county has not emerged even now -- the help of the girls was and is very urgently required at times if they are able to bear a part.
"She attended district school as a girl, and finished for the time being with one winter in the Alba village school. June 15, 1890, she was married to Frank Clymer and went to Alba to live. One daughter was born to them, Miss Gladys Clymer. June 7, 1899, Mrs. Clymer decided to go home, and she did so.
"In September that same fall, she entered the Ferris Institute at Big Rapids, remaining till the July following, taking shorthand and typewriting. In January, 1901, she came to Bellaire when her father, Edson M. Olds, entered upon his first term as county treasurer. She took charge of the office for him, and after one month's help has since done the work alone, attending carefully and strictly to the work of the county in that department.
"In September, 1901, Mrs. Clymer purchased the millinery business of Mrs. T. R. Dunson upon the latter's removal to a western state, and at once enlarged the scope of the business. Mrs. Clymer employs competent help, and in the millinery seasons secures the best possible talent from the cities to cater to the public desire for tasty millinery in the latest styles and patterns. She keeps the general supervision of the business herself, and is very particular as to goods and qualities.
"Mrs. Clymer quite early in life developed business qualities that have been a notable characteristic of the lady. She was not afraid to work, and was not one to accept from anyone assistance in anything she could do for herself. When a girl some neighbor gave her a pig that they believed must die. She succeeded in coaxing him to live, and that fall her bank account was enriched $13.75 in consequence.
"During the fall before she left Alba, Mrs. Clymer rode her bicycle 5 1/4 miles to her father's farm in time to got to work at 7 o'clock digging potatoes and then picking them up. At 6 at night she rode her bicycle home again. This she did for two weeks, receiving $1.00 per day and her board. The next summer she fitted the soil (except plowing) and planted and tended an acre and a half of potatoes. She left for school before it came time to dig them, and her father attended to that for her, and she added a respectable sum to her school funds that way. While in Big Rapids she worked Saturdays in the grocery store of T. Laughlin to help out expenses. She was able to work, had the opportunity to assist herself, thereby not requiring so much of the feely extended assistance from home, and she did it as a matter of course.
"Always strong and robust, Mrs. Clymer became interested to some extent in athletic sports while in Big Rapids, and was a member of the champion basket ball team in the business college. Since coming to Bellaire she has been a active member in the ladies' basket ball teams that played regularly last winter and the winter before.
"Mr. Olds' second term as county treasurer expires with the present year, and upon her release from the duties of the office Mrs. Clymer expects to go to Grand Rapids, where she hopes to obtain a lucrative position."13

"Escapes Injury When Car Tips Completely Over
"Mrs. Almer Miller tipped completely over in her car Sunday night without being hurt when she slewed on the ice on the road on the south side of Clam Lake. After the car was towed out of the woods for her at the edge of the road where it tipped over, she got in and drove it off.
"The top of her 1940 Tudor Ford was dented in, as was the hood, three fenders and even the trunk in the back, but she hardly realized that she had gone over completely, as the car was right side up again.17
Great-granddaughter Kay (born Karen Emma Frigon) Fudge of Spartanburg, South Carolina, remembers "Grandma Miller" as a thin, straight, tall lady with her hair in a bun who did not have central heating in her home, cut her own wood, and had impressive strength of character.18

     Her obituary states:
"Mrs. Alma Miller, 77-Year Resident of County, Lived Active Life Here
"Bellaire -- Funeral services for Alma Miller, 83, a resident of the county for 77 years, were held Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at the Matthew funeral home, with the Rev. Alton Finney, of the Pilgrim Holiness church, conducted the last rites.
"Immediately after the services, the body was taken by Matthew hearse to Maplewood cemetery at North Baltimore, Ohio, for burial.
"Mrs. Miller was very active in business and civic affairs of the area, having once operated the Clam River store, served as deputy in the county treasurer's office under her father, and worked in the Bellaire post office when Rose Pryor was the posmistress.
"Mrs. Miller died on Saturday afternoon, May 18, at Meadow Brook hospital, where she had been staying since March of this year.
"Mrs. Miller was born at Bunker Hill, Michigan, on September 14, 1873, to Edson M. and Mary Jane Olds. The family which included two brothers Albert and Wesley, came to Alba on November 18, 1880, and settled in Star township.
"Mrs. Miller first came to Bellaire in December of 1900, when her father began serving the first of two terms as county treasurer. She served as his assistant and conducted a millinery business on the side. She bought out the T. R. Dunson millinery business in September of 1901.
"She married Frank Clymer on June 15, 1890, and to this union was born a daughter Gladys, who is now Mrs. Gladys Kline living at Bellaire.
"Later in 1908, she married Perrin C. Wellman. He passed away in May of 1920. Her last marriage was to William F. Miller. Together they operated the Clam River store at Clam River for seven or eight years, until they sold out in the spring of 1930 to Dan Junker. Mr. Miller died in August of 1932 at Ashland, Ohio.
"Mrs. Miller attended Ferris Institute in 1899 and prepared herself in shorthand and typing for

her duties at the court house.
"She worked for several years at the Bellaire post office under Rose Pryor, who left the post office in 1920.
"She spent the declining years of her life from 1940 to 1952 at her home on Clam Lake, until ill health forced her to to give up living alone. In 1953, she moved to Elk Rapids to live with Loretta Fox, until she was hospitalized this year.
"In addition to her daughter, she leaves an adopted son, Durward Wellman, of Flint, as well as eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
[The next is possibly from another part of the paper.]
"The relatives from out-of-town who attended the funeral of Mrs. Alma Miller were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Kline, Jr., Michael and Linda of Dearborn Hills. Mr. and Mrs. Carleton Kline and Susan of Wayne, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Frigon, Karen and Patricia of Livonia, Mr. and Mrs. Durward Wellman and three daughters of Flint, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Olds of Alba, Mrs. Andrew Kline, Mrs. Ben Kline and Mrs. Hattie Kline all of Elk Rapids."
