William Robert Olds was born on 26 Nov 1934 at Willimantic, Connecticut.1,2 He was the son of Willard Swift Olds and Henrietta Corbeil.1 William Robert Olds died on 30 Sep 2016 at Bloomfield, Connecticut, at age 81.2
     His obituary states:
"Bill Olds died on September 30, 2016 in his Bloomfield home, after a long and courageous journey with Alzheimer's Disease, surrounded by and enfolded in the love of his family. He was born November 26, 1934 in Willimantic, the son of Henrietta (Corbeil) and Willard Olds. Surviving him are his wife Astrida (Rose) Olds, his daughter Laura Tate and her husband Philip Tate, and his daughter Lisa Heath and her husband James Heath, who lovingly cared for him at home his last two years. Surviving him also are his grandchildren Anna, John, and Susan Tate, and his sister Mary Meikle and her husband Bob Meikle. Also mourning his death are many friends and numerous relatives in the United States, Canada, and Latvia. He was predeceased by his parents and his stepmother Rose (Wrana) Olds. Bill grew up in Mansfield and graduated from Windham High School. In subsequent years he achieved a Master's degree and a Doctorate in law related education from the University of Massachusetts. In his early adulthood, Bill worked as a sportscaster at WILI Radio in Willimantic. After that he was the first Executive Director of the Windham Area Community Action Program (WACAP). Later, he had a twenty-five year career as Executive Director of the Connecticut Civil Liberties Union. The Hartford Courant once dubbed Bill "Mr. Civil Liberties." Bill was a friend to the marginalized, an ally to the vulnerable, and a champion of civil liberties for all. Under his direction, the CCLU improved access to health care for low-income women, cleared the way for the first woman firefighter in New Haven, secured religious observance rights for inmates at the Danbury Federal Correctional Institution, fought against forced sterilization of children with mental disabilities, and sought equality in education. With clarity and conviction, he eloquently defended the rights to peaceful assembly and free speech, including for groups with which he strongly disagreed. In Bill, freedom found a champion of consistent principles and unwavering certitude. His devotion to equality and justice was evident to all who knew him, and he gracefully shouldered his mantle as a constant civil liberties ambassador. Bill enjoyed entertaining children, especially his grandchildren, with his many ventriloquism puppets. To the utter surprise and delight of many, his puppet "Wally" was a "guest speaker" at his retirement dinner. The family would like to thank all of the friends, physicians, and caregivers who provided invaluable support throughout his journey, and especially the staff of McLean Hospice for their loving care and devotion to Bill and his entire family. Contributions in Bill's memory may be made to McLean Hospice of Simsbury. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. He did go gently into that good night, and his light will forever shine."

Olds, of Custer, is a successful representative of mining interests and has found prosperity in that industry which has made the Black Hills famous the world over and which contributes so largely to the wealth of the southwestern part of the state. He was born in Carroll county, Indiana, October 22, 1848, of the marriage of Reuben P. and Philena (Buckingham) Olds, both natives of Ohio. In early manhood the father engaged in speculating and went to California about 1850. He was with the party who discovered Boise Basin in Idaho and afterward located Olds' Ferry on the Snake river. That point was a busy and important one, as all freight bound to Boise, Idaho, and Umatilla, Oregon, was transported over the river there. Upon selling his property there about 1868 Mr. Olds located at Walla Walla Washington, where he purchased land and turned his attention to farming. While a resident of Josephine county, Oregon he was elected to various county and town offices which he filled acceptably. He passed away in 1873 and his wife died when our subject was a child. They were the parents of three children, of whom William W. is the second in order of birth. Mary F. is the widow of Samuel F. Coit, a farmer and stockman who resided at Hudson, Wisconsin. He passed away in the spring of 1914 and his widow is now residing at Washington, D. C. Julia married J. C. Baker, of Bandon, Oregon, who owns and operates the Bandon Creamery.
"William W. Olds attended public school at Hudson, Wisconsin, and after completing his preparatory work at Oregon City, Oregon entered Willamette University at Salem. When nineteen years of age he went to Idaho and took charge of a gang of men who were working on a toll road for his father. The following year he went to the mines at Shasta, Baker county, Oregon, and continued there until a party started for the head waters of the Snake river in 1869. He was in that region when the first railroad crossed the continent and was present when the golden spike was driven connecting the Central Pacific with the Union Pacific. He mined for some time on the bars of Snake river and invented a process for saving fine gold. In the fall of 1869 he went to Texas and for three years devoted his attention to the cattle business. He drove three herds to Kansas and upon disposing of his cattle went to California and entered the employ of a railroad company at Santa Cruz, that state. He checked out and shipped redwood ties for some time but in the winter of 1876 he arrived in the Black Hills. He traveled as far as Sidney on the Union Pacific, but at that point with three others hired a four-horse team and was driven to Deadwood. He engaged in mining there until the summer of 1877, when he removed to Custer. He organized the Ruberta Mining and Milling Company and the May Mining Company, both if which are operating a number of paying mines. He engages in Quartz mining chiefly and his various mining properties are yielding him a good income. Since coming to the Black Hills he has also equipped and sold seven ranches and still has his homestead right. At one time he held title to the Cascade Springs at Hot Springs and he also formerly owned the Crown Hill mining group at Bald mountain, the Hudson group of mines above Central and other properties. He understands mining thoroughly and devotes his entire attention to that business.
[A portrait of William W. Olds appears here.]
"Mr. Olds was married on the 9th of November, 1880, to Miss Pauline Pettijohn, who was born in Chile, South America. Her father, William Pettijohn, who was a native of Missouri, served in the Mexican war and was captured and imprisoned in Mexico City. . . . [Mr. and Mrs Pettijohn] were the parents of six children, of whom Mrs. Olds is the third in order of birth. She was educated in St. Louis, Missouri, and was married at the time of the visit of her family to the United States. Mr. and Mrs. Olds have two children: Frank R., who is now in the employ of the government forestry bureau and is stationed at Custer; and Ruby M., who received her education at the Spearfish Normal School and is now is South America under a three year contract to establish a normal school in Santiago, Chile She has been very successful and the school now has an enrollment of over four hundred and has already made itself felt as a powerful educational force.
"Mr. Olds is a republican and for one term was register of deeds and for three terms served on the town board. For a number of years he has been a member of the school board and has always taken the keenest interest in the welfare of the public schools. Fraternally he is a member of the Masonic blue lodge at Custer, in which he is past master and is the present senior warden. The greater part of his time has naturally been taken up with his own business interests, which he has managed successfully, thus gaining financial independence, but he has also found time to cooperate with worthy movements and is justly considered a valuable and public-spirited citizen."6

Winter Jesse Olds was born on 22 Jan 1860 at Free Soil Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota.2 He was the son of Lewis Olds and Eunice Velina Scovel.1 Winter Jesse Olds married Evangeline Van Meurs on 22 Jan 1889 at Union City, Erie County, Pennsylvania.2 Winter Jesse Olds died on 28 Dec 1934 at age 74.3
He "lives at Union City, Pa., and is the founder and proprietor of the Union City Greenhouses".2
"Winter J. Olds. 'Jesse' Olds, the proprietor of the Union City Greenhouse, represents a family well-known in Erie county. The Olds family is of English origin, but was established in the colonies as early as 1669, the founder of the American line being Dr. Robert Old (also written Ould), who, according to colonial records, resided in Windsor and Suffield, Connecticut, from 1669 to 1728, and whose third son, Mindwell Old, was the first white child born in Suffield. Robert Old was the father of fourteen children, thirteen of whom were sons, and at least ten of these sons grew to manhood. There was little of "race suicide" among the early Olds families as the official records of the state of Massachusetts contain the names of more than twenty members of this family who bore honorable part in the early Indian and French wars, and of more than fifty of this name who served in the Revolutionary war.
[I have moved the additional material on the Olds lineage to the reports on the individuals involved.]
"Winter J. Olds followed clerking during the first year of his business life, and coming to Union City in 1873 he has since made his home here. He is the present proprietor of the Union City Greenhouse, one of the leading establishments of its kind in Erie county. He is well versed in the germination and cultivation of flowers of every kind native to cr grown in this climate, but he has made a specialty of the growing of chrysanthemums. His greenhouse contains ten thousand square feet of glass, and he receives orders from all parts of the United States, his trade extending as far as Oregon, Texas and Nova Scotia, and this extensive business has grown from his small gardening plant of 1882.
"On the 22d of January, 1889, Mr. Olds was married to Miss Evangeline Van Meurs, and they have had four children: Lewis W., born November 18, 1889; Mary E., deceased, was born September 4, 1892; Hugh W. was born April 13, 1895; and John Alfred was born June 27, 1904. Mr. Olds votes with the Prohibition party, is one of the pioneers of that party organization in Erie county, and has served as secretary of the Prohibition county committee and is one of its strongest men and most efficient workers in the county. He is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and of the Royal Arcanum. Since 1884 his religious home has been with the Presbyterian church.4 "
His obituary states: "Death 12/28/1934 Olds, W.J., passed away on Friday, December 28, 1934. He was united in marriage to Evangeline Van Meurs. They had four children, a daughter Mary died in infancy. The other children and his wife survive."3
