"How Bill Olds came to Bosque County is a mystery. He emerges as a loner; no family members seem nearby. Some suspected that William C. Olds was of Indian descent. He was born about 1851 or 1852, but the exact location is uncertain. Census records vary on that subject with Texas reported in 1880 and Missouri reported in 1910. According to a granddaughter he was born with the surname Holland; Olds became an alias. As the story goes, young Mr. Holland, a Confederate soldier, decided to join Quantrill's guerilla band. But as a witness to their dangerous exploits, in which he may have participated, he decided to sever ties with Quantrill. He considered becoming a lawyer. In distancing himself from his Missouri past, Holland became Olds. Whether William C. was his given name, however, is not clear.
