JUG OF “MOON” IN CORN FIELD ON OLDS FARM
Sheriff At Last Gets Evidence Against lee Olds of Wyanet for Bootleggimg
Lee Olds, Wyanet farmer, and Harold Jensen, his hired hand, are
under arrest for violation of the federal laws. Sheriff Spaulding has been worried a lot by Olds, who has been in local courts before, and until Saturday night he had not been able to get evidence enough on him to justify arrest, although repeated complaints had been received that Olds was selling moonshine liquor.
Saturday evening Sheriff Spaulding decided to make another investigation and going to the village
with Deputy Abbott took in the lay of things without being seen. After watching young Jensen, make a couple of trips from the village to the farm and back on horse back, the officers followed him back to the horse [sic] for the day, he was approached by Abbott who stated that he had seen Olds in town and he had sent him for a pint of whiskey. The hoy invited Abbott, who he mistook for a member of the hard road gang to accompany him to the hiding place of the booze and they started through a corn field, with Sheriff Spaulding following at a safe distance. When in the center of the field Jensen stopped and began to dig with his hands until presently there was revealed a jug containing about three quarts of liquor. While he was pouring a pint of the booze into a bottle for Abbott Sheriff Spaul-d [sic] came up and without revealing his identity asked if he could not also buy some. Jensen replied he could have all he wanted and finally agreed to sell him a five gallon jug for $55. As they were trying to locate the exact spot where the five gallon jug was buried Sheriff Spaulding asked the lad if they were not afrald of being caught at such work. Jensen replied that he and Olds were too smart for the officers Jensen adding that there were two
deputies in the village that very night but they were not clever enough to catch them.
After searching for some little time Jensen evidently begun to see that maybe he had talked too much and finally stated he could not locate the big jug. Then Sheriff Spaulding produced a pair of handcuffs which he applied to the young man’s hands, taking him entirely by surprise. After the officers had made themselves known the hoy lost no time in searching but went immediately to the spot where the booze was burled.
Olds was picked up a short time later on the streets of Wyanet and the two were brought to Princeton. Olds claimed that he had nothing to do with the traffic in liquor and that the boy was the one who had been doing the business, although
he had knowledge of what was going on. Monday afternoon Jensen was released while Judge Prichard
has taken Olds' case under advisement for a short time before passing sentence, Olds having pleaded guilty.
