"The basic research on the English records for Thomas Ford was published by Jacobus and Torrey in 1939 [TAG 16:41-43]. In this article are some records of a Thomas Ford of Powerstock, Dorsetshire, which may or may not be relevant to our Thomas Ford. [This is Anderson's caveat about Joan Way, whom he does not include.] Torrey had earlier presented evidence on AARON COOKE which showed that he was stepson rather than son-in-law of Thomas Ford [TAG 11:179-80]."4

Mary Ann "Polly" Fortenberry was born on 20 Jul 1842.2 She married George W. Bragg.3 Mary Ann "Polly" Fortenberry died on 15 Mar 1915 at age 724 and was buried at Abner Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Spartanburg County, South Carolina.2
She appears to match the M. A. Fortenberry, age 8, apparently daughter of James and Jane Fortenberry, both age 36, natives of South Carolina, in the 11 Aug 1850 census of Spartanburg County, and the Polly A. Fortenberry, age 18, with James Fortenberry, age 40, in the 1860 census at P. O. Reidville, Spartanburg County. Mary Fortenberry, age 28, was still with James in the 1870 census at P. O. Glenn Springs, Spartanburg County. Thus, since she was single all through the Civil War, the pension later collectd by widow Mary Ann Bragg must have been based on the service of George W. Bragg and not on an earlier husband. I need to review the genealogy of James Fortenberry by Gilbert and Dusterhoft which is in the Spartanburg County Library.
Mary Ann "Polly" Bragg and "Wash" Bragg appeared on the census of 23 Jun 1900 at Beech Springs Township, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, as follows:
Bragg, Mary A., b. March 1850, age 50, widow, b. S.C., father b. S.C., mother b. SC
Bragg, Wash, S G son, b. Apr. 1878, age 22, single, b. S.C., parents b. S.C.
Mary Ann "Polly" Fortenberry appeared on the census of 3 May 1910 at Beech Springs Township, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, as follows:

Bragg, Wash, S G son, b. Apr. 1878, age 22, single, b. S.C., parents b. S.C.
The "S G son" surely indicates step-grandson. The birth date for Mary is significantly different from that gleaned from other records and is probably incorrect.5
Mary Ann "Polly" Fortenberry appeared on the census of 3 May 1910 at Beech Springs Township, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, as follows:
232/235 Bragg, Polly A., head, 67, widowed, general farming, had one child, none living, b. S. C., father b. N. C., mother b. S. C., farmer

Aaron Fortner was born c 1814 at North Carolina. He married Sarah Orand on 13 Feb 1831 at Wilkes County, North Carolina. The marriage of Aaron Fortner and Sarah Orand with bondman Jacob Orren is reported by Brent H. Holcomb in his Marriages of Wilkes County, North Carolina, 1778-1868. (Gen. Pub. Co., 1983). This connects with the death record of Alex Fortner in Mitchell Co., NC, which lists his parents as Aaron Fortner and Sarah Orang(?).

His age was "about 86" and the cause of death was "No Medical Attention" -- which I presume means "unknown" rather than being the actual cause! Alexander was illiterate. Ralph Fortner, also of Boonford, was the informant and Alexander was buried at Wing, NC, on 14 Feb. 1915. This is an important record linking his brother John Fortner to Aaron Fortner and Sarah ORAND.
