"Frank W. Olds, for many years a successful farmer and stock raiser, now one of the leading business men of Muntih, is a native of Washtenaw county, Michigan, and the son of Norman A. and Clarissa (Lindley) Olds. The father was born in Vermont and the mother in the state of New York. Norman Olds, Sr., the subject's grandfather, was also a Vermonter, but many years ago moved to Niagara county, New York, where he spent the remainder of his life as an enterprising tiller of the soil: Of his nine children Norman A was the seventh and all were born before the family left the Green Mountain state.
"Norman A. Olds was born September 1, 1823, accompanied his parents to New York when a youth and there remained until 1850, when he came to Michigan and purchased a farm of eighty acres in Scio township, Washtenaw county. After clearing and otherwise improving his place and living on the same about fifteen years, he sold out and bought one hundred and twenty acres in Blackman township, Jackson couty, whither he removed in 1865. The latter place was only partially cleared when Mr. Olds took possession and he at once proceeded to improve it and in due time had one of the best farms in that part of the county. He erected good buildings, planted a large orchard, raised fine live stock and in the course of a few years became one on the most enterprising men of the community. Mr. Olds was self-made, beginning life with no means beyond an ax and a yoke of oxen, but his energy, industry and laudable ambition to succeed more than made up for his lack of material capital. His wife, a fit companion and helpmeet for such a husband, proved an able and faithful assistant during their early married life and while raising her family knew not by practical experience the meaning of leisure or idleness. She spun. knit, sewed, made all the clothing for the family and for many long years her life was a ceaseless round of patient toil and unselfish devotion to the welfare of those dependent upon her. After acquiring an ample competence for their declining years this esteemed couple rested from their labors and are now living in retirement on the homestead in Blackman township. Norman A. Olds has been an influential factor in the affairs of his community, ever since moving to the county, thirty-eight years ago, and few men of Blackman are as widely known and as highly esteemed. He is a zealous Republican in politics and, although quite an old man, still retains much of the physical and mental vigor of his prime and keeps in close touch with the trend of current events. The family of Mr. and Mrs. Olds consists of six children, the oldest being Dora, a lady of fifty-three years; she married Charles Morris, a carpenter and machinist, is the mother of one child, and at this time lives in the state of California. Frank W., of this review, is the second in order of birth, after whom is Ida, wife of Henry Glispie[sic], of Tompkins township; Mrs. Glispie resides on a fine farm and has a family of three living children, one being deceased. Alexander, the fifth in succession, is a citizen of California, engaged in the stock business, owning a large ranch in one of the most favored sections of the state. Clara, the youngest member of the family, is the wife of Andrew Harris, and lives in the city of Jackson, where her husband is proprietor of a popular sanitarium.
"Frank W. Olds, the immediate subject of this sketch, was born September 3, 1853, in Scio township, Washtenaw county, and remained with his parents until eighteen years old, the meanwhile of winter seasons receiving a fair education in the pubic schools. He was reared to honest toil and while at home helped with the farm work and contributed his share to the family's support. At the above age he started out for himself and during the four years following was in the employ of the Michigan Central and Flint & Pere Marquette railroad companies, at the expiration of which time he resigned his position to take charge of a large farm in Henrietta township, belonging to a man by the name of Holt. Meanwhile, on the 28th of August, 1878, he was united in marriage with Miss Emma Holt , daughter of Squire and Hannah (Lord) Holt of New York, and immediately thereafter the young couple set up their domestic establishment on the above farm where they lived and prospered during the ensuing twenty years. In February, 1899, Mr. Olds abandoned agricultural pursuits and opened a hardware house in the town of Munith, which he has since conducted with a constantly increasing trade, being at the time the leader in that line of business. He carries a full assortment of hardware, in addition to which he handles agricultural implements, wagons, buggies and vehicles of all kinds, besides conducting a thoroughly stocked bazaar which has a large and lucrative patronage. From a modest beginning Mr. Olds has gradually built up a business which in volume and importance is now second to that of no other in the town. His career presents a series of continued successes such as few men under similar circumstances attain and the present indications point to a future of still more promise. Mr. Olds has not only reached a commanding position in the business circles of the community, but has as an enterprising, public spirited citizen he ranks with the progressive men of his town and county. Since moving to Munith he has maintained a lively interest in the town's affairs and through his efforts its material growth has greatly increased, to say nothing of its influence in promoting the social and moral welfare of the place. Politically he is a Republican and as such has been a potent factor in the party in his township where for a number of years he has been recognized as a leader in local affairs. At the present time he is serving as deputy sheriff of Jackson county and so efficiently has he discharged the duties of the position that his friends predict for him higher official honors at no distant day. Mr. Olds enjoys a large measure of popularity and has the confidence of the public irrespective of political affiliation. He is well qualified to fill important station, being intellectually keen and alert, and true to every trust confided to his care. He has managed his own large and growing interests with the consummate skill which betokens a broad mind and wise forethought, and the place he now occupies in public esteem is prophetic of continued prosperity in the years to come.
"Mr. and Mrs. Olds are the parents of five children, whose names are as follows: Allie L., an employe[e] of the Detroit Stove Works; Nellie, who married Clarence Shoemaker, a telegraph operator stationed at La Crosse, Indiana; Harry, a youth of fifteen, and still under the parental roof' Lutie, aged ten, and Loine, four years old. Mr. Olds was careful to provide his children with good educational advantages and they in turn availed themselves of every opportunity for intellectual culture. Allie is a well educated and accomplished young business man with a bright future before him; he achieved honorable repute as a teacher, and Nellie is a lady of varied culture, especially proficient in music. Mrs. Olds is a member of the Methodist church, deeply interested in all the good work in which her congregation is engaged and is well known and popular with the best society circles of the town of her residence. Mr. Olds is not identified with any religious organization, but he has profound respect for the church and contributes liberally of his means to its support.. He is also interested in the charitable and benevolent enterprises of the community and never withholds assistance from a needy person or worthy object, providing the claims of each are legitimate. As a citizen he is progressive in all the term implies and as a neighbor and friend has so stamped his individuality upon the community as to make his presence felt in its affairs."10

"NORMAN EVRY OLDS contributes the following: "There has been no change whatever in my business status since 1930 (advertising manager of the Perfection
Stove Company), except that inasmuch as my income depends upon the income of the company to a measurable extent, I have gone down the hill and part way up
again with the rest of the country, although there never has been any time during the depression when we failed to make some profit. My oldest daughter, Jane
Alison, was married in February, 1932, and is now Mrs. Carl J. Harbert. She has a son a year old, named after his grandfather, and all the indications are that young
Norman will be in Harvard in about seventeen years. My second daughter, Virginia, graduated from the University of Michigan in June, 1932, and Nancy is now a
sophomore at the University of Michigan. The only hobby that I have been able to ride with any regularity has been golf. I have maintained about the same level of
accomplishment as during the last several years, so my handicap still sticks at around ten. My interest in books is very varied, depending upon the purpose of the
moment. I enjoy history and poetry, strange as that may seem, and have a fairly good library of both. I dislike most of the present moving pictures? they are a
complete waste of time, eyesight, emotions, and money. I have no seated objection to the idea of a new deal if the government would continue to deal in an orthodox
way, from the top of the deck. I do object to their inclination in a number of matters to slip a card off the bottom of the deck, out of the middle, or out of their sleeve. I
believe that in spite of the prevalence of the descendants of the House of Israel in Washington and of their convictions, the Constitution of the U.S. remains a
remarkably workable and sound document. I feel that there is only one really satisfactory way filling in the span of life allotted to us, and that is to get all of the
enjoyment out of it you can consistent with the proper regard for the equal right of other people to do the same thing. After all, this boils down practically to the Golden Rule -- what more do you want. Address: 7609 Platt Avenue Cleveland, Ohio."6
Norman was a 1905 graduate of Harvard College. A class directory published in 1905 has this to say about him:

Norman Evry Olds, born 17 Feb 1881, Fort Wayne, Indiana, son of Charles Luther Olds and Eliza Jane McLachlan. School: Cornell University. In Scientific School, 1902 - 1905; S. B. 1905. Married Clara Louise Hull, Fort Wayne, Ind., Oct. 31, 1906. Children: Jane Alison, Sept 2, 1907; Virginia Hull, July 18, 1910. Occupation Merchant. Home address 7 Merrill Apartments, Berkely, Cal. Business address: Oakland, Calif.7
Norman Evry Olds appeared on the census of 19 Jan 1920 at Summit City, Union County, New Jersey, as follows:

Oliver Olds was born in Nov 1890 at Texas.1,2 He was the son of William C. Olds and Samantha Ann Rachel Jones.1
"Oliver Olds, her youngest sibling [of Mollie Smith Rusk], put distance between himself -- at least geographically -- from the violence stalking his family. He relocated to Cochise County, Arizona, supporting his wife and two daughters as a cattle inspector. He retired as an engineer from the Arizona Highway Deprtment. Oliver Olds joined the Baptist church and became a prominent member of the Masonic Lodge. He returned to Texas late in life, settling in El Paso, and died there January 27, 1965. His wife and daughters were under the impression that he was a graduate of Baylor University, in Waco. 'He definitely did not graduate from here,' says Tiffany Sowel of the Texas Collection at Baylor University. A search of the college's student records has found no indication of Oliver Olds's enrollment. Supposedly, Olds was a U.S. Marshall, but a search of the records of the U. S. Marshals Service finds no evidence of his service. He may, however, have been a local marshal."3
