Amariah Wheelock was born on 7 Jul 1770 at Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts.2 He married Elizabeth Old, daughter of Ezekiel Old and Elizabeth (?), on 2 May 1793 at Alstead, New Hampshire.3 Amariah Wheelock died on 20 Jun 1839 at Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, at age 68.1
"Amariah is enumerated in the 1800 Census, living in Alstead, NH, age 26-45, living with 2 males under 10, 2 females under 10, one female age 10-16, and one female age 26-45. He next appears 1830 in Beaver Dam [Township], Erie County, PA, age 60-70, wife age 50-60, and a son 10-15. He does not appear in the 1840 Census."1
This family is reported in a biographical sketch of Chandler B. Wheelock where many of the details contradict those I have used here. This is a reminder of the generally poor reputation for accuracy that such "mug books" have and a reminder that, although I have often used them for reasonably contemporary information, even that should be verified elsewhere. The highlights mark new or contradictory data.
"Chandler B. Wheelock, a retired merchant of Marquette... born March 6, 1816, in Cavendish, Windsor Co., Vt., ... The father of our subject, Amariah Wheelock, was born in the Bay State in 1780, and married Betsy Olds, a native of New Hampshire, born in 1781. They became the parents of twelve children, of whom these lived to mature years - Betsy became the wife of Silas Walker and settled in Honey Creek4, Erie Co., PA; Ruth became the wife of Lyman Anjer, who opened the first hotel in Marquette County; Jesse, who was born in Windsor County, Vt., in 1800, is thought to be living, yet it is not certainly known that he still survives; Lydia married Benjamin Tracy and settled in Erie County where both died; Chandler B., completes the family.
"In 1816, when our subject was but a babe, his parents removed to Genesee County, N. Y., where they resided for six years. They then became residents of Erie County, Pa., were Mr. Wheelock died in 1849. His wife afterward became a resident of Ashtabula County, Ohio, where she passed away in 1852. She was a faithful member of the Baptist Church. The husband supported the Whig party and served his country in the War of 1812.
"Chandler Wheelock of whom we write ... first married in 1837, when Miss Lydia Lawrence became his wife. Unto them were born eight children. ... The death of the mother occurred in 1864, and Mr. Wheelock married for his second wife Mrs. Harris, whose maiden name was Eliza J. Wilson. She died on the 1st day of January, 1875. He was a third time married, his union being with Mrs. Cahoon, widow of Joel K. Cahoon. Her maiden name was Mary Randall, and by her former marriage she had four children ...5 "
