Bernice Rosan Roe was born on 2 Dec 1927.1 She was the daughter of Clarence Sage Roe and Bernice Emilia Olds.1
Her obituary states: Charlevoix Courier (MI) — Tuesday, September 23, 2008
"Bernice "Bunny" Olds Roe Smith died on Tuesday Sept. 2. She was 80 years old.
"Smith was the granddaughter of Ransom Eli Olds, the automobile pioneer, and Metta Woodard Olds. The Olds family had several summer cottages and properties in northern Michigan, especially in Charlevoix.
"(At the Belvedere Club) my great-grandfather, Ransom, owned the #39 house, that's the one with the turret on top," said Clela Nicole Gray, daughter of Smith.
"Gray said that her and her family used to come up to Charlevoix every summer. "My mother spent all of her summers here except for the last three years she was alive," said Gray. "She just thought it was a beautiful spot."
"As a renowned dog lover, Smith was once quoted as saying, "Dogs are only children in fur coats."
"Gray said that her mother was a lifeguard at the Belvedere as a teenager. She also said that she once saved a 2-year-old from drowning when the child fell off of a ski dock. Gray said that for most of her life, her mother was a housewife.
"As a youngster, Smith also enjoyed sailing and beach parties with her family in northern Michigan. "I remember always having lunch from the Belvedere Club, or bringing some food and having a picnic lunch with her during the summertime," Gray said.
"Smith's grandfather, Ransom, once described northern Michigan as "God's heaven." According to Gray, Ransom also used to own a boathouse that sat in Round Lake. "It was later made into a condominium in the '70s or '80s," said Gray. "Its that long barn-like looking thing."
"Smith donated to, among many things, the community pool. She also gave money so children from Beaver Island could come over to Charlevoix and take swimming lessons.
"She was a very loyal supporter of the historical society," said Dave Miles, Harsha House Museum Director. "She was a patron, and from what I know of her, she gave to a lot of different organizations."2

Joseph Edwin Root married Addie Cottingham. Joseph Edwin Root was born on 24 Oct 1881. His death certificate gives his father's name as unknown and his mother as Ann Elizabeth Ridgely.1 He was the son of Tenny Root and Ann Elizabeth Ridgely. Joseph Edwin Root died on 19 Sep 1967 at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital, Highlands, Macon County, North Carolina, at age 85.2 He was buried on 22 Sep 1967 at Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.1

[He was renting a farm.].3 He registered with the World War I Selective Service System on 13 Sep 1918 at Girard, Crawford County, Kansas. He described himself as living on R4, Girard, Crawford County, Kansas, age 37, born 24 Oct 1881, and his occupation was farming for himself. He was medium in height, medium in build, with blue eyes and had black hair. His closest relative was Mrs. Addie Root also of Route 4, Girard.4
Joseph Edwin Root and Addie Root appeared on the census of 1920 at Crawford, Crawford County, Kansas, as follows: The listing shows:
Joseph E. Root, age 38, b. KS, father b. NH, mother b. Ill., farmer on home farm

Addie Root, age 48, 1st marr. at age 20, b. SC, father b. SC, mother b. SC
The implication of these records is that Joseph Root was not the father of Roy and that Addie had been married previously.6
"Joseph Edwin Root (1881 - 1967) of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Addie Cottingham Ridgely Root (1877 - 1961) of Charleston, South Carolina, arrived in 1925, and for the next 30 years, their home, which they built at Main and Third Streets, became Addie's popular gift shop and tearoom. Joseph was hired in 1928 as a construction engineer for the new Highlands Estates Golf Course. Reeves Hardware replaced their home in 1967. (Photographs by Mary Elizabeth Cone.)" [It must be an error to attach the name Ridgely to Addie -- DWO.].7
"J. E. Root was born in 1881 in Girard. He spent most of his life in Highlands, North Carolina, where he was the engineer for the Highlands Golf Course. He married a widow, Addie McEachern.
