"I was raised in the wood across the road about 200 yards from here. ... My father was William Bevis, who died at the age of eighty. Miss Zelia Hames of Pea Ridge was my mother. My parents are buried at Bethlehem Methodist Church. I was brought up in Methodism and I do not know anything else. I had two brothers and four sisters. My twin sister died last April 1937. She was Fannie Holcombe. . . . My grandmother, Mrs. Phoebe Bevis used to tell Revolutionary stories and sing songs that were sung during that period. Grandmother knew some Tories. She always told me that old Nat Gist was a Tory ... that was the way he got rich.
"Hampton was elected governor the morning my mother died. Father went in his carriage to Jonesville to vote for Hampton. We all thought that Hampton was fine."15

"George Biderman, who organized opposition to a plan by Robert Moses for a four-lane highway the length of Fire Island, N.Y., died on July 20 at his home on the West Side of Manhattan. He was 81.
"The cause was throat cancer, his son, John Biderman, said.
"Fire Island, off Long Island, is one of the few American barrier islands without a formal road system. Mr. Biderman, a summer resident there, began doing public relations for the Fire Island Association in 1956. The Officers and Directors of the Fire Island Association record, with sorrow, the passing of George Biderman, a former president of the association, on July 20. For 25 years, George Biderman was a leader, first, in the creation of the Fire Island National Seashore and, second, in its critical formative years, when the National Park Service and the residents of Fire Island's 17 communities worked together to devise ground rules under which this unique unit of the National Park System would be managed. The association, the residents and millions of visitors to Fire Island are greatly in his debt."5
