Charles Hawley Olds was born on 4 Nov 1865 at Jefferson, Ohio.1 He was the son of Abner D. Olds and Adaliza H. Hawley.1 Charles Hawley Olds married Eugenia J. Kincaid on 29 Jan 1893 at Elgin, Kane County, Illinois.1 Charles Hawley Olds died on 18 Mar 1934 at Cleveland, Ohio. This gives his calculated age as 68 years, 4 months and 14 days.3
"[H]e is a prominent lawyer at Cleveland, Ohio."1
"Charles Hawley Olds came to Cleveland in 1890, has been a member of the bar for a quarter of a century, and is regarded as one of the best and most capable attorneys of the city, member of the firm Turney, Olds & Sipe, handling the business of many important corporations and doing an extensive volume of general practice. The firm occupies extensive quarters in the Engineers Building, and besides the three constituent partners there are seven other attorneys associated with the firm.
"Mr. Olds was born at Jefferson. Ohio, November 4, 1865, a son of Rev. Abner D. and Adeliza (Hawley) Olds. The old home at Jefferson where he was born has been in the Hawley family for more than 100 years. In all that time no mortgage has ever been recorded against it, and five generations of the Hawleys have lived there, including the first occupants, great-grandfather and great-grandmother Hawley. The present occupant is Theodore Hawley, an uncle of the Cleveland lawyer. Mr. Olds has in his possession a compilation of the genealogies of both the Olds and Hawley families. In the paternal line his ancestry goes back to the year 1022, while the Hawleys' record is traced to the date of the Norman conquest of England, 1066. Mr. Olds' father, Rev. Abner D. Olds, was born on the day that the battle of New Orleans was fought, January 5, 1815, and lived to be past eightytwo, dying in 1897. He fought as a soldier in the Civil war, while his father Jeremiah was a participant in the War of 1812 and his grandfather James Olds, great-grandfather of Charles H., was a captain in the Revolution. Mr. Olds' mother died at Oberlin, Ohio, in 1890, at the age of sixty.
"Charles H. Olds received his early education at Oberlin, graduating from the high school in 1885, from the preparatory department of Oberlin College in 1886, and then took the regular classical course of Oberlin which bestowed upon him the degree A. B. in 1890. Leaving college he came to Cleveland and began the study of law in the offices of Smith & Blake, and was admitted to practice in 1892.
"While Mr. Olds has been content with the solid achievemtnts of the law and the handling of a large and varied practice, he has at different times served the public, largely through his profession. From 1909 to 1913 he was first assistant prosecuting attorney of Cuyahoga County under John A. Cline, and while in that office he took a more active part in politics than either before or since, making campaign speeches in behalf of the republican organization every fall. During 1897-99 he was a member of the council of Glenville, since absorbed into the larger City of Cleveland. Mr. Olds is now chairman of Local Exemption Board No. 18 of Cleveland, being appointed in July, 1917. The present law firm of Turnev, Olds & Sipe was formed on May 1, 1916.
"Mr. Olds owns a farm of 131 acres in Strongsville Township below Berea on the electric line, and also accessible to the city by a paved highway. He has begun the development of this as a modern fruit farm, and it now has 1,000 young fruit trees. Mr. Olds and family reside at Villa Beach on the Lake Shore Boulevard. "
"He has been very active in the Colonial Club, which he served as secretary for six years, was president from April, 1915, to April, 1916, and is now on its advisory committee. He is a member of the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce, the Civic League, the Tippecanoe Club, the Western Reserve Club, and with his wife is a member of the Windermere Presbyterian Church. Fraternally he is affiliated with Woodward Lodge, Free & Accepted Masons, McKinley Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, Cleveland Council, Royal & Select Masters, and with the Knights of Pythias. One of his active interests and no doubt the source of his good health, has been his annual recreation trip for camping, fishing and hunting in distant wilds. He has frequently made journeys of 1,000 miles in pursuit of his favorite sport and he is a member and director of Norton B. Fishing Club, located on a fifty-acre island in the Canadian waters twelve miles north of Put-in-Bay.
"At Elgin, Illinois, June 29, 1893, Mr. Olds married Miss Eugenia J. Kincaid of Elgin. Mrs. Olds in the maternal line is a greatgreat-granddaughter of the noted Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island and Providence plantations. Her ancestry to this noted American runs back through seven generations. Mr. and Mrs. Olds have one daughter, Florence Eugenia, who was born at Cleveland, was educated in the Laurel School and in 1913 graduated from the high school at Ashland, Oregon. On January 1, 1918, she married Mr. John LaGatta. formerly of New York City, but now of Philadelphia."4
His obituary states:
"C. H. OLDS, OF BAR HERE, DIES AT 69
"Served Assistant Prosecutor Under Cline, 1909 to 1912.
"Charles Hawley Olds, 69, former assistant county prosecutor and long a member of the bar here, died yesterday of pneumonia after being ill ten days. Mr. Olds was born in Jefferson, O., and was graduated from Oberlin College in 1890. He studied law with J. A. Smith, now one of the oldest practicing attorneys in the city, with whom he later became associated as a partner. He had practiced law in Cleveland since 1892 and at the time of his death was a partner in the law firm of Smith, Olds, Thompson & Harris.
"From 1909 to 1912 Mr. Olds served as assistant county prosecutor under John A. Cline.
"He was a member of Lakewood Congregational Church, a Knight Templar, a 32d degree Mason and a member of Al Koran Shrine, the Union and University clubs, the Early Settlers Association, the New England Society of Cleveland, the Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Campfire Club.
"Sylvester V. McMahon, acting president of the Cleveland Bar Assiciation, last night appointed a committee composed of Paul Howland, J. A. Smith, Frank C. Scott, Samuel Horowitz, G. M. Cummings and Frank A. Quall to represent the association at Mr. Olds' funeral.
"Surviving Mr. Olds are his wife, Mrs. Eugenia Kincaid Olds, a daughter, Mrs. Florence Olds La Gatta, wife of the artist John La Gatta, and a foster daughter, Priscilla. Mr. Olds lived at 18148 Clifton Road, Lakewood.
"The funeral will ge tomorrow at 3 p. m. at Wade Memorial Chapel."3
Charles Henry Olds was born on 10 May 1870 at Illinois.2,3 He was the son of David Osmun Olds and Matilda E. Patton.1 Charles Henry Olds married Mary Harriet Wheeler c 1898.4 Charles Henry Olds died on 3 Jul 1959 at Inyo County, California, at age 893 and was buried at East Line Street Cemetery, Bishop, Inyo County, California.5
It was a big leap from Charles Olds, age 9, listed in David's family in the 1880 census of Thayer County, Nebraska to this listing in California in 1900 but the later finding of his obituary has confirmed the connection. Also, since the May 1870 birthdate is a good match for -- or else conflicts with -- the Leroy Olds in the 1870 census, I have wondered whether Charles and Leroy are the same person. Leroy has not been identified after the 1870 census. He is not named in the obituary of either his father or mother, although all of David's second family are said to have been still living in 1926. Furthermore, Alexander's autobiography says his father had two boys and two girls by his second wife, leaving no room for Leroy (although infant deaths are sometimes neglected). Several Family Trees on Ancestry.com give the name as Charles Henry "Leroy" Olds but I have seen no further evidence.

Charles J. Olds was born on 11 May 1865 at Richmond, Ashtabula County, Ohio.1 He was the son of Franklin E. Olds and Matilda C. Nims.1 Charles J. Olds married Josephine Tuttle on 11 Dec 1886.2 Charles J. Olds died on 19 Sep 1938 at age 73.3 He was buried at Welton Cemetery, Burton, Geauga County, Ohio.4
"Charles J. Olds is Postmaster at Orwell, Ashtabula county, Ohio, as well as editor of the Orwell News-Letter, a weekly paper which has a large circulation. It is ably edited and contains interesting county and State news. Our subject does all kinds of general job printing, etc., and makes low rates and estimates on all varieties of work in his lines. In every possible manner he endeavors to improve his paper and has made of it a very interesting and newsy sheet, one of the best in the county. He has had considerable experience along literary lines and as an editor is able and well posted. The post office comes under the head of fourth class, and Mr. Olds has been the genial Postmaster since 1889.
"The birth of our subject occurred in Richmond, Ashtabula county, May 11, 1865. His parents, Frank E. and Matilda C. (Nims) Olds, now make their home in the village of Orwell. Charles J. is one of seven children, two of whom died in infancy, and one, Sarah, died at the age of thirteen years. The others who survive are Agnes, now Mrs. Porter Hodge, of Orwell, who was born August 2, 1861; Heman C., born October 12, 1863, and who now lives in Orwell, and Henry W., whose birth occurred June 24, 1877. Until ten years of age, our subject was reared on a farm, after which his parents removed to Orwell, where he received his entire education at the Orwell Normal Institute. For some time he engaged in teaching, but finding that occupation not as remunerative as he wished he embarked in 1886 in the printing business, purchasing a half interest interest in the Andover Citizen, published in Andover, Ohio. After remaining there for one year he sold out and entered the employ of the Gazette, of Jefferson, Ohio, Senator Lampson's paper.
"In July, 1889, Mr. Olds was appointed Postmaster at Orwell by President Harrison, who gave him the preference over two other candidates. In 1891, he erected a fine brick business house, where he conducts his editorial work. The large front apartment is devoted to the post office. In 1889, he established the Orwell News-Letter and has continued as its editor and sole proprietor. Though the paper has been so recently established, the circulation has grown and the paper maintains its place among the best of the county.
[p. 532 begins] "On the 11th of December, 1886, Mr. Olds married Miss Josephine Tuttle, daughter of A. T. and Abigail Tuttle, of West Andover, their family being one of the representative ones of the township. Mrs. Olds is a graduate of New Lyme Institute. She was, before her marriage, one of the successful teachers of the county. She is very fond of painting and has given instruction in the art. Our worthy subject and wife are the parents of two children: Harmon T., born March 15, 1890, and Marjorie, born July 25, 1892. Mrs. Olds is a member of the Congregational Church of West Andover.
"Politically, Mr. Olds is a staunch Republican, and it is needless to say that his paper is a purely Republican sheet, devoted to the interests of the party. Fraternally, he is a member of the Knights of Pythias and also belongs to the Junior Order of American Mechanics. As a man he merits the high esteem in which he is held by one and all, for he is a man of integrity and sterling worth."5

Charles L. Olds was born on 15 Jul 1841.1 He was the son of Noble Granger Olds and Elizabeth Woolsey.1 Charles L. Olds died on 18 Dec 1849 at age 8.1
His obituary states:
"A boy named Charles L. Olds, son of N. G. and Elizabeth Olds, aged about 9 years, was skating near the wharf of the Mansfield and Sandusky Rail-Road depot this morning about 9 o'clock, when he skated upon a portion of the bay that was frozen over last night, which gave way beneath him. The water was not deep, but the thinness of the ice prevented him from getting out, and before assistance could arrive, the little fellow was chilled to death. We understand that he was at no time under the water until he died. A woman saw him him[sic] but could not or dared not go to his relief, and half an hour passed before he was taken from the water. This should prove a warning to our venturesome youngsters, and deter them from trusting the ice too soon. Almost every year, some youth pa s[sic -- pays] his life as the price of his daring spirit.
"The funeral will take place at the residence of Mr. Olds on Franklin street, at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The friends of the family are invited to attend."2
Another obituary for Charles states: Charles S. Olds, son of N. G. and Elizabeth Olds, died 25 [sic] Dec 1849, at age 9.3

Charles was a 1905 graduate of Harvard College and a class directory published in 1915 says: Charles Luther Olds, Jr., born 13 June 1877 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, son of Charles Luther Olds and Eliza Jane McLachlan Olds. School: Fort Wayne High School. Years in College: 1903-1905 and continues with the following:
"The summer after our graduation, i.e. the summer of 1905, I was senior counclllor at Mowglis Camp for Young Boys, Bridgewater, N. H., for the second season, That fall I became a master at St. Paul's School, Concord, N. H., and had a very enjoyable year there. The summer of 1906, I spent at Charlevoix, Mich., with the rest of our family. In 1906-1907, I enjoyed another pleasant year at St. Paul's, and spent the summer of 1907, for the third season, as senior councillor at the Mowglis. Yielding to the lure of the far West, I went out to Thatcher School, Nordhoff, Cal., where I enjoyed the teaching and life very much but not enough to stay so far West more than one school year. The following summer, that of 1908, I spent in tutoring a boy at Walpole, N, H. In the fall of 1908, I secured a position as master at Noble's School, Boston, Mass., where I taught very happily for four years. I spent the summer of 1909 at home, in Fort Wayne, Ind., and then in 1910, wishing a more active and out-of-door summer, I became senior councillor at Camp Wyanoke for Boys, Wolfboro, N. H., and have liked it so much that I have been there every summer since and shall be there this coming summer. In the school year 1912-1913, I helped start Hampden Hall, a country-day school for boys just outside of New Haven, Conn. While on a camping trip to Squam Lake, N. H., during the summer of 1913, I met Dr. Huntington, and that fall I became a master at Cloyne House School, Newport, R. I., where I am now teaching.
"Thus you see that all my time, winter and summer, is taken up in the supervision and teaching of boys, and it is a professiion I thoroughly enjoy. Most of all do I enjoy my summers at camp for there one has all the pleasures of association with the young and none of the drudgery of the schoolroom, one lives in the open air and becomes a boy again one's self. Member: Harvard Club of Boston, Harvard Club of New York."5 He "lives at Newport, R. I."1
