William Alexander "Buck" Bennett married Martha "Pattty" Wofford.2 William Alexander "Buck" Bennett was born on 8 May 1808.1 He died on 11 Aug 1886 at age 78.1
William Alexander "Buck" Bennett was buried at Walnut Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Walnut Grove, Spartanburg County, South Carolina. A note without reference posted here says: "Husband of MARTHA "PATTIE" L. WOFFORD BENNETT. Son of JAMES Jr. and PRECIOUS WOFFORD BENNETT.
He was the leader of the "Roebuck Band", named for Camp.[sic--Capt.?] ROEBUCK, of Revolutionary War notoriety."3
"Her [Martha Wofford's] husband, "Uncle Billly", as everybody called him, was a whole-souled man, a consistent member of the Baptist Church, while his wife was a Metodist. Together they lived a happy life, both hospitable to a degree beyond their means.
"He loved hunting and was an excellent marksman and an adept angler. They were both beloved by their neighbors and friends, and many mourned their loss.
"Ther influence for good is felt among their acquaintances even until today."4
"This description of the muster [post Civil War meetings and drills including former soldiers and others] would be very incomplete without saying something of the famous Roebuck [musical] Band, socalled in honor (no doubt) of Captain Roebuck, who had fought so valiantly at King's Mountain and elsewhere in the Revolution. The leader of this band deserves more than a passing notice. His name was Williaam Bennett but he was better known as "Uncle Buck Bennett". His ancestry was good old Revolutionary stock. He was as well or better known at this time than any man in the southern section of Spartanburg County. Full of good old frolicky fun, he loved music, taught singing schools for many miles around, was a leader in Friendship Baptist Church, an expert with gun and rod, he killed the first partridge on the wing that i ever saw fall. I thought then that it was almost miraculous. He and Aunt Patty were as hospitable a couple as I ever have seen. They both lived to a ripe old age.
"The band was composed of the following named persons: Captain, Wm. Bennett . . . The nusic they used was Rig Ship, Winnsboro Quickstep, Faster's Quickstep, Washington Quickstep, La Fayette's Quickstep, and Home, Sweet Home Quickstep.
"They wore a uniform patterned somewhat after the old Continental style, and surely looked imposing as they marched from point to point on the musterground with the military step, blowing their instruments and beating their drums with such earnestness of purpose. The National Marine Band or the most noted musicians of any age never held or entertained an audience with sweeter music better than they did the crowds at these annual gatherings."5

According to a Plymouth Colony Court Record dated 4 Mar. 1661/2, Dorcas Bessy, Ann Bessy and Mary Bessy were before the Court for 'crewel and unnatural practice toward their father-in-law George Barlow.' The confession that Ann made to the Court shows that she was unmarried. (Plymouth Co. Ct. Rec. 4:10.) She probably married Andrew2 Hallet soon after, and was probably the mother of only one child, Mehitable Hallet who married John Dexter."1
"Andrew Hallet died in 1684, and soon after his death, his widow Ann made her will 23 June 1684, which was probated 1 June 1694. She mentions first, "my youngest daughter Mehitable Dexter"; my grandson John Bourne; my daughter Ruhama Bourne; my daughter Abigail Alden; and appointed these three daughters to executer her will. The inventory was taken 12 April 1894; among the items was a "debt due from widow Hersey." The inventory was attested by "Ruhamah Hersey daughter of ye above deceased Anna Hallet before Barnabas Lothrop Judge of Probates Apr. 13, 1694."6
The name is also spelled Berse.
ToDo: My file had the date of birth as 6 April 1694. This might be the date of death. Find a reference.

Anthony Besse
M, (c 1609 - )

Anthony Besse was born c 1609 at England.1 He married Jane (?) c 1638.1
"Anthony Besse was born at England in 1609 and came to America in 1635 on board the ship named James. Anthony was listed as 26 years old and was certified "for conformity in religion and that he was no subsity man." Most of our information on the Besse family is taken from Descendants of Anthony Besse 1609-1656 compiled by Mrs. Florence Besse Ballantine, 1965. We are grateful for this information as we have spent hours trying to find further facts to fill out the information she found, to no avail.
Anthony lived briefly in Lynn, MA, then moved to Sandwich, MA where he remained until he died at the age of 47 or 48. (His will is dated 10 Feb. 1656, proved 3 June 1657.) This will, which in all probability he wrote himself, and a letter which remains, show him to have been educated. Sandwich records show he participated in public affairs, helped the projects of building a mill and a meeting house and of securing a minister. He was before the Court only once and that for "disorderly keeping house alone" in 1638. He received ".01 acre" (?) in the 1641 division of meadow lands and in 1643 was declared liable to bear arms. Anthony seemed to be very concerned for the welfare of the Indians and worked with the minister as a lay preacher for their benefit.
Anthony Besse's mother was still alive in 1656 when Anthony wrote his will as he mentions "in case my mother send any thinge over to me as formerly she had Don that it be Disposed of among my family in general." His will lists his six children, plus the one with which his wife was then pregnant. His widow, Jane Besse married (2) George Barlow. In 1661, Jane's daughters, Dorcas and Ann Besse, were brought before the Court on charges of ill treating their stepfather. Ann confessed that she had. Both girls were unmarried at the time and living "at home." George Barlow was a marshal and gained the reputation of being a "bad fellow" because of his unfair activities under the protection of his office. In her will in 1693, Jane Besse Barlow mentions only Ann Hallett, Elizabeth Bodfish, Nehemiah Besse, Rebecca Hunter, John Barlow and Nathan Barlow as her children. This indicates she had at least two sons by George Barlow.
Anthony and his wife Jane Besse had seven children, all born at Sandwich, MA:
Dorcas, date of birth unknown, d. probably before 1693; m. ca. 1664 John Presbury of Saco, ME.
Ann, date of birth unknown, m. Andrew Hallett.
Nehemiah, b. ca. 1641; m. Mary Ransom.
David, b. 23 May 1649; d. 1676 in the Battle of Rehoboth.
Mary, date of birth unknown, died probably before 1693.
Elizabeth, date of birth unknown; m. 1674 Joseph Bodfish.
Rebecca, date of birth unknown; m. 1671 William Hunter."2
"Early records of Sandwich are in a dilapidated condition and provide the birth record of only one child, that of David, but the following is the probably birth order of the Besse children as given in the wills."1
