Peter P. Gates married Elberta E. Olds, daughter of James Hiram Olds and Nancy Ann Parker, on 1 Aug 1875 at Yamhill County, Oregon.1,2,3 Peter P. Gates died on 29 Aug 1894.4 He was buried at Masonic Cemetery, Lafayette, Yamhill County, Oregon.5
It may be that Peter Gates had a first wife named Mary. The 1870 census of Lafayette Precinct shows:
Gates, Peter, 29, sheriff, b. Penn.
, Mary, 18, keeping house, b. California.6
Peter P. Gates appeared on the census of 1 Jun 1880 at Lafayette Village, Yamhill County, Oregon, as follows:
Gates, Peter P., 39, widowed, b. Penn., parents b. Penn.
listed with the family of James H. Olds.7
; Peter P. Gates of Lafayette, Yamhill County, Oregon had enlisted as a private in the first Oregon cavalry and served from 14 Jan 1862 to 20 Jan 1865, recorded as three years and 4 days.8
His obituary states: "DEATH OF P. B. GATES
"Instantly killed while on a hunting trip
"During a Violent Wind Storm He Was Struck on the Head by the Limb of a Tree
"Hillsboro, Aug. 29 -- Word reached here this evening that Hon. Peter B. Gates, of Lafayette, was instantly killed last night while on a hunting trip in the Coast range mountains, at the headwaters of Gates creek, commonly known as Salmon Berry creek, 6(?) miles west of this city. In company with J. J. Knight, of Hillsboro, and two other gentlemen whose names are not known here, Mr. Gates left Sunday morning for a two weeks' outing. About 12 o'clock last night a violent wind storm swept over the vicinity of their camping ground and carried their tent away. Almost immediately afterward a huge limb fell from a tree, and striking Mr. Gates on the head, smashed his skull, killing him instantly. The other members of the party were not injured. ...
"It is expected that the body will be brought down the trail to Nehalem and placed in a casket there tomorrow night. It will then be taken to the home of the deceased, at Lafayette, where the funeral will occur. Mr. Gates was about 56 years of age. He was very prominently known in Yamhill county, and also in Portland, where he had many personal friends. He was elected to the Oregon state senate from Yamhill county in 1888, and served with credit during two sessions of the legislature. In politics he was a stalwart republican. He was ex-grandmaster of the grand lodge of Odd Fellows of Oregon, and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. He leaves a widow and three children."9
Another story published at time of Peter Gates' death was told by Captain D. P. Thompson, formerly of Company E, 1st Regiment, Oregon cavalry volunteers. Gates had been quite young when he left his studies at the Willamette University and appeared, with his horse, to volunteer their services. He had his father's written permission with him and eventually prevailed upon Captain Thompson to accept him into service. He applied himself quite seriously to the task, was made mule sergeant of the company and was a Lieutenant upon his discharge. Thompson is quoted as saying: 'Peter Gates has been a true and good citizen of Oregon. As sheriff of Yamhill he made an excellent official, and as a senator served his constituents well and faithfully. In his death not only Yamhill county, but the state of Oregon, has lost a good and influential citizen, whose pride was that of being an honest man.10'"

On 6 March 1843, Charles Gault reported that he had paid Susannah Page $46 on 2 Nov 1842 and was still holding $191.80 "for James Pages children four in number", for Thom Gault, minor, $128.33, and for Selina Bevis, a minor, $32.08.
