Gramarial James died SH 31 Oct 1960 p, ?? At Spartanburg General Hospital, Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, South Carolina.2 He married Carrie E. (?).3 Gramarial James was born on 20 Aug 1887 at South Carolina.1 He was the son of Hiram James.1 Gramarial James was buried at Nazareth Prebyterian Church Cemetery, Moore, Spartanburg County, South Carolina.4
When Mearl James, age 26, of Roebuck, S. C., born 11 March 1891 in Spartanburg County, S.C., registered for the WW I draft, he was married with two children and he did not name his parents.5
Gramarial James appeared on the census of 7 Apr 1930 at Reidville Township, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, as follows:
161/161 James, Mearl, head, renter, 40, marr. at 22 yrs, b. S.C., parents b. S.C., farm, general farm
      , Carrie, wife, 39, marr. at 20 yrs, b. N.C., parents b. N.C., weaver, cotton mill
      , Alice, dau., 17, b, S.C., father b. S.C., mother b. N.C., [occuptation] none
      , Maud L., dau., 14, b. S.C., father b. S.C., mother b.N.C. [occupation] none
      , Lemuel D., son, 11, b. S.C., father b. S.C., mother b.N.C.

      , Lloyd, son, 6, b. S.C., father b. S.C., mother b.N.C.6
When Mearl E. [Gramarial, apparently] James, born 6 July 1890 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, made a Social Security application in October, 1942, he listed his parents as Hiram James and Sally McAbee.7
His death record names the father as Wendell James, a man not otherwise in my records, and mother as Carrie Frances James, seemingly the wife of Mearl. The informant, L. D. James, is probably Lemue D., the son of Mearl listed in the 1930 census.8 Although I still have no explanation for these errors, I am treating this as unreliable.6

In 1910, his wife Sarah, who had been married twice, now had been married 27 years, and was age 64 or 66.
The obituary of Marenda James Bishop names one surviving sister, Mrs. Alma Shackleford. and five half siblings, Mrs. Sallie Rickstraw, Mrs. Lula Bishop, Berry James, William James and Commerrell James. Of eight known children, I have found the death records for only seven and there is incomplete consistencey among the parents named. This family all seem to have the surname James and thus to be the children of Hiram. The table below was collected to identify the wife or wives of Hiram.

Hiram James left a will in Spartanburg County dated 2 Aug 1876. He left his estate to his wife Sariann for life or widowhood and then to his six children ( Elvona Corilla[,] Hiram[,] Watsall[,] John Quincy[,] Maggie[,] Silona -- I'm guessing how to break this into 6 names). The will was probated 5 March 1877.3
This Hiram James is a candidate to be the father of the younger Hiram but this Sarah could not be his mother. Perhaps the necessary evidence can be found in the estate papers or among his children's records.
