Alma Ruth Whitlock was born on 15 Sep 1911 at Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee.1 She was the daughter of William Jacob Whitlock and Ella Mae Warwick. Alma Ruth Whitlock married John Howard Poteat, son of Frank Bela Poteat and Cora Viola Phillips, on 6 Jul 1934 at Bristol, Virginia.2 Alma Ruth Whitlock died on 10 Nov 2002 at Hawkins County, Tennessee, at age 91.3,4 She was buried at Oak Hill Mausoleum, Kingsport, Sullivan County, Tennessee.3
She graduated on 30 May 1929 from Jonesboro High School, Jonesboro, Tennessee. Student names are not in alphabetic order and Ruth is listed third. Is this academic standing?5
Alma Ruth Whitlock appeared on the census of 11 Apr 1930 at Jonesboro, Washington County, Tennessee, as follows:
106/117 Whitlock, Ruth W., head, renter, 19, single, not attending school, b. Tenn., parents b. Tenn., no occupation
, Ruby W., sister, 13, single, attending school, b. Tenn., parents b. Tenn., no occupation
[Why did the census taker assign both girls the middle initial W.?]
Several people were listed at this house number, 225 (East Main Street or Spring Street?). The next person listed at this address was
Nead, Sarah C., head, owner, 73, widowed, b. Tenn., parents b. N.C., no occupaption
She was a great-aunt of the two girls.6
Ruth was active in a Kingsport Child Guidance Group during Betty's time in school. Their members were mothers from all the elementary schools. The 1948-49 Yearbook lists her as past president for 1946-47. She was a member in 1947-49 and 1948-49 when her address was 1463 Garden Drive, Kingsport. In 1948, she was one of the hostesses for the May meeting (a joint meeting with a Child Study Club).
Ruth served as president of the Junior PTA for the academic years 1948-49 and 1949-50. Her election was reported at the last meeting of the prior year, 8 May 1948. The theme for her first year was "Your Child is Growing Up" and many of the group activities for the year were reported in the Kingsport Times News. One article reported that there were 490 members. Meetings sometimes had as many as 500 mothers and fathers attending. At Ruth's final meeting as president, "Mrs. C. B. Duke [treasurer], presented Mrs. Poteat with past president's pin in recognition of her work as leader of the organization for the past two years." She had represented the Junior High School PTA in at least 13 outside group meetings during the 1948-49 year.7

I have a family record in the handwriting of Ruth Whitlock Poteat, written on the stationary of W. J. Whitlock, Box 291, Fries, Virgiina. It has the appearance of being copied from some prior record, such as a Whitlock Bible. When Betty (Poteat) Olds first transcribed this for me, Ruth said she had probably copied this from her father's Bible shortly after his death. In any case, it is currently filed in the envelope of a sympathy telegram Ruth received there from the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Kingport. I choose to record this document in full at this point.

Samuel Whitlock, 6, male, b. N. C., attended school within the year
Catherine Whitlock, 4, female, b. N. C.
Although the birthplaces of the children given in this 1860 census record suggest that the family came to Tennessee after about 1856, later census records do not support this.6
According to muster rolls obtained from the National Archives in 1963, Jacob Whitlock enlisted 9 Feb 1862 for a period of three years and he was enrolled by Lt. Tipton at Jonesboro, Tennessee. He appears on the roll of Company B, 19th Regiment of Tennessee Infantry (Confederate) at least through Oct 1863. The roster of 11 May 1863, when he was listed as age 36, was taken near Shelbyville, Tennessee. According to theinformation printed on these muster rolls, this company was known at various times as Captain Willett's Company, Company F or Company B, 19th Regiment Tennessee Infantry.
"Jacob Whitlock was away for four years in the Civil War. He 'farmed his children out' to the neighbors while he was gone. They were not all well treated. Sam had been beaten, but one day he saw a man walking quite a distance away and said 'You won't beat me anymore -- here comes my father' -- it was Jacob Whitlock returning from the war. Jacob only had four children: David, Sam, Sallie and Jane. Sallie married a Nead, Jane a Haire."7

His obituary states: "Two of Leesburg's oldest citizens died last week, Jacob Whitlock and Samuel B. McAdams."11
Another family, possibly with close ties to this one, was that of Jonas Whitlock who married Diana Sammons on 24 Dec 1850 in Washington County, Tennessee. The 1860 census record of Washington County, p. 124.5, shows Jones, age 39, b. NC, Dianah, 40, John D., 8, Columbus, 6, Mary, 4, William L (or S?), 3, and James H., 6/12. In 1870, Diana, age 41, b. NC, was head of household with Post Office at Leesburg, and the children were David, 19, Columbus, 18, Mary, 14, William, 13, James, 12, and Esther E., 8. By 1880, Diana, age 52, was listed as married (not widowed), b. in TN of NC parents with daughter Mary, age 24 (father b. NC), and son James, age 20. On 8 Nov 1874, John D. William Jacob Whitlock was born on 5 Mar 1884 at Tennessee.1,2 He was the son of David Oliver Whitlock and Mary Ann Frances Rhudy. William Jacob Whitlock married Ella Mae Warwick, daughter of William Henry Harrison Warwick and Mary C. Matlock, on 12 Apr 1904 at Knox County, Tennessee. William Jacob Whitlock married Grace Newman on 4 Jul 1935 at Spring Valley, Grayson County, Virginia.3 William Jacob Whitlock died on 27 Nov 1951 at N. C. Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina, at age 67.4
William Jacob Whitlock and Ella Mae Whitlock appeared on the census of 25 Apr 1910 at 321 McGhee, Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee, as follows:
28/30 Whitlock, William, 22, marr 6 yrs, b. Tenn., parents b. Tenn., "9-9-7-3" cotton mill
, Ella, 24, marr. 6 yrs, b. Tenn., parents b. Tenn.5
William Jacob Whitlock registered with the World War I Selective Service System on 12 Sep 1918. He described himself as living at 1211 McMillan, Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee, age 35, born 5 March 1883, and his occupation was as a speeder for Standard Knitting Mills on Washington Avenue in Knoxville. He was medium in height, slender in build, with blue eyes and had brown hair. His closest relative was Ella Whitlock, his wife. He had a scar on the left side of his head behind his ear.6
William Jacob Whitlock and Ella Mae Whitlock appeared on the census of 17 Jan 1920 at 1209 McMillan Street, Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee, as follows:
521/525 Whitlock, William, head, 38, b. Tenn., parents b. Tenn., laborer in knitting mill
, Ella, wife, 38, b. Tenn., parents b. Tenn.
, Ruth, daughter, 8, b. Tenn., parents b. Tenn.
, Ruby, daughter, 3 9/12, b. Tenn., parents b. Tenn.
[The next family is that of James F. and Minnie Gray and Mary Whitlock.]7
William Jacob Whitlock registered with the Selective Service in Apr 1942, among men born on or after 28 April 1877 and on or before Feb. 16, 1897. He said he was born in Washington County, Tennessee on 5 March 1884 and gave his address as 364 Boarding House St., Fries, Grayson County, Virginia. He was employed at Washington Mills Co. in Fries and his contact person was Mrs. Grace Whitlock of Fries. He was described as 5' 9", 160 pounds, with gray eyes, gray hair, and ruddy complexion. and listed "obvious physical characteristics that will aid in identification" as "scar on back of head. Two toes on right foot grown together."8
On 17 Nov 2006, at the burial service for Ruby Hash, I met Jimmie Lineberger who had known Bill Whitlock and hung around him a lot as a young kid. Bill worked in a cotton mill at Fries which was a mill town. That was a subject I was curious about, so he gave me this quick overview: Housing and electricity were provided by the mill owners. An outdoor faucet between each pair of houses provided water. No indoor toilets. Some payments were in mill scrip, exchangeable only at the company store. Also, the company used a lot of $2 bills in payment. The company ran a very strict town. You could lose your job and housing even if it was your kids that got you into trouble. The company kept a doctor and dentist for the employees. Also a town policeman was provided who kept the place very quiet. If he saw you out at night, he wanted to know where you were going.
One time Bill Whitlock gave Jimmie an old pipe without a stem. Jimmie took it home, filled it with coffee grounds and smoked them. It made him sick.
Bill had a name for all of his things. He called his dog Dagwood. He called his wheelbarrow ---?-- and used it to give Jimmie and his twin brother rides in it and that was a lot of fun. Whitlock used to hum a lot.9
His obituary states:
"William J. Whitlock, 73, who resided in the Eagle Bottom section near Fries, died at 4:20 p. m. Tuesday, November 27, in Baptist hospital, Winston-Salem.
"The widow, Mrs. Grace Newman Whitlock, is among survivors.

Interment, under Vaughan-Guynn direction, was in Felts cemetery, Galax."10 He is buried with his second wife in the Felts Memorial Cemetery off Glendale Road, Galax, VA, and the birth and death date are on his stone there.2

Dorothy Maxine Whitney was born on 7 Dec 1900 at Wyanet, Bureau County, Illinois.1 She was the daughter of Monroe Gesner Whitney and Blanche Olds. Dorothy Maxine Whitney died on 30 Mar 1990 at Sunset Conv. Center, Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai County, Idaho, at age 89.2 She was buried at Forest Cemetery, Coeur d"Alene, Kootenai County, Idaho.3
"As for myself, my career has been quite checkered. I received my A. B. degree from Oberlin College, Ohio, in 1924, with a major in economics. I taught for four years at the Coeur d'Alene high school -- European history. Then, after a year as secretary to the General Counsel of the Federal Land Bank of Spokane, Washington, I went to Stanford where I received an MA degree in history in 1930. By that time the depression was going on and I was fortunate to be offered any job -- a position of teaching shorthand and bookkeeping at the Coeur d'Alene high school. I stood this for six years and then took a chance and quit to come downtown to manage the business college which my father had established in 1914. This worked out fine but when World War II came, we sold the school and I was appointed the District Court Reporter from 1942-45 while the regular reporter was away with the Sea Bees. It was then that I decided to return to one of my childhood ambitions -- becoming a lawyer; and I set out for the University of Idaho Law School, and started my own office here in 1948. Since then, except for six years when I served as Probate Judge (appointed the first time because my father was retiring from the office because of ill health -- and old age), I have been practicing law. I ought to be thinking about retirement, but can't bring myself to it yet, although I suppose I will get out during the next year. However, I do enjoy the rhythm of the business and legal world and am afraid I'd feel lost if I couldn't come to town every day to be a part of it, although I suppose for the last couple of years I've been (theoretically, at least) coming down for only half days, and not doing much of anything except probate work."4
Her obituary states:
"Maxine Whitney, 89
"Maxine D. Whitney, 89, Coeur d'Alene, died Friday, March 30, 1990, at Sunset Terrace Convalescent Center.
"Born Dec. 7, 1900, at Wyanet, Ill., to Monroe and Blanche (Olds) Whitney, she moved to Coeur d'Alene with her parents in 1907 and had since lived in the same house. She graduated from Oberlin College in 1924 and received a master's degree from Stanford in 1930. She taught at Coeur d'Alene High School in the 1930s.
"She excelled in Pitman Shorthand. She operated and taught at Whitney College of Commerce, started by her father in the 1940s. She was the court reporter from 1942 to 1945 for the Eighth Judicial District, then attended University of Idaho Law School from 1945 to 1948. She was elected probate judge from 1953 to 1958. In 1958 she entered private law practice, retiring in 1978.
"She was past president of the Soroptimistic Club in Coeur d'Alene, loved music and theater.
"Survivors include nephews William Whitney of Pasadena, Calif., and Robert Whitney of Monterey Park, Calif; five grand nieces and nephews and seven great-grand nieces and nephews.
"Memorial services will be 3 p.m. April 11 at English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene."2
"I am very sorry to have to write to tell you that Maxine Whitney passed away on Friday, March 30. She had a fall on Thursday afternoon in her room at Sunset Terrace Convalescent Center, possibly as a result of dizziness. Her emergency room x-rays showed she had probably not broken anything, and we were sent back to Sunset Terrace. She eventually was able to get to sleep, but she died of apparent heart failure, most likely while she slept, early Friday morning.
"She enjoyed hearing from her friends whom she was used to corresponding with, even though for some time she has not been a very good correspondent. ...
"With the possible exception of writing letters, Maxine had all along kept herself as mentally alert and physically active as she could possibly manage. After her fall, she was quite angry with herself, since the fall made it look as though she might have to temporarily go back to some sort of walker for assistance, which she hated! In many ways, she was a tremendous inspiration."5
